Gothenburg rifle association
With their full length debut ”Gothenburg Rifle Association”, the five gentlemen in The Carnation show beyond any doubt that they are capable of writing classy pop tunes that will stand the test of time. Of course, one tends to find loads of references popping up while enjoying the album’s twelve tracks, but the final result is totally The Carnation’s own. The Swedes seems to master many different musical genres, from haunting rock paranoia in the opening track to the straightfoward pop of the single “New sensation”, right down to the mellow nostalgia of dreamy ballad “No other way”. This pared with the fact that the band has three talented vocalists will prevent the listener from ever losing interest. Holding this diverse piece together is strength of the melodies and a very British feel, making the punkier numbers sound more like The Libertines than The Strokes. Which is a good thing.- Format

Human Universals
On ”Human Universals” The Carnation are leaving their new wave-infected sound for something rather different. While the harsh vocal delivery remains intact in places, the overall impression of the album is one of development. With the inclusion of synthesizers, dance grooves and Christian Bergman’s melancholic-psychedelic slide guitar parts the band has certainly come a long way since their debut with “Gothenburg Rifle Association”. The new record begins in a stylish way with the delayed drums of soul-pop effort “Label slaves”, before the punky guitar and bass of “Thursday’s kid” kicks in. These are followed by a list of songs that combines anger, hate and frustration with political awareness and hope for the future. When singer Eric Obo barks about terrace aggro in “Where’s the violence?”, it’s actually hard not to believe him. After a staggering 42 minutes the final chord of the 13th and last song “On the losing end” fades out and the listener is guaranteed to have been affected in some way or another.- Format

CARNATION, THE
New sensation

CARNATION, THE
Take action!
The Carnation is a rock band from Gothenburg, Sweden and their song'' I don't want to lose you'' is one of the best powerpop songs in this time. Together the well dressed gentlemen of this quintet are doing their best to create a unique and personal mix of pop melodies, punk attitude and a trashy, new wave-sound. This EP consists of material from a while back but is still valid. It is so by showing beyond any doubt that The Carnation are blessed with the ability to write honest and oh-so-catchy tunes. This spring the band is putting a single out and the autumn will see the release of The Carnation's first full length-album, which will hit stores all over the world in September. The record is being produced by Björn Olsson, already renowned for his excellent work both in Sweden and abroad and also a former member of fellow Gothenburg-rockers The Soundtrack of our lives.- Format

Down With Liberty... Up With Chains!
The 2009 debut album from the chain gang led by Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up, Weird War) is a masterpiece of primitivism. From dazzling set pieces of R&B and rock'n'roll, the band forms highly melodic songs full of call-and-response chants ("What Is A Dollar"), or invites you to take a walk through the cemetery ("Cemetry Map"), which sounds so spooky as if voodoo master Dr. John had thought it up. Sometimes Svenonius just grabs a wooden guitar to make fun of conspiracy theories like in "Deathbed Confessions": "I faked the moon landing, I saved Hitler's brain. Yeah, it's in Argentina but it controls the USA." Calvin Johnson produced the album at his Dub Narcotic studio and also did a bit of background vocals. The beat lurches and sways as confidently and surely as an old sea dog's gait in a breeze of doppelkorn. The somewhat odd album title is explained by the always conceptually thinking singer as follows: "Everywhere freedom goes, it leaves a path of destruction. Fast food, bad architecture, materialism, unbridled greed, destroyed environment, imperial conquests, class struggle; combined, these phenomena are seemingly synonymous with freedom." When big words often hide only capitalist greed and imperialist war, Svenonius & Co. prefer to slip into the role of dissidents. "Ian Svenonius is an inadvertent pioneer. His career has been a studied attempt to advance the history of punk rock, using influences as tools to build with rather than styles to flaunt and discard." - The Wire- Format

In Cool Blood
The third album of Chain & The Gang, released in 2012, has an attractive wild card: Katie Alice Greer – the charismatic singer of the Priests takes over the second voice in all songs. And no matter whether she just blurts out a pointed "Yeah!" or takes over the song completely, as in "Free Will" – her presence is palpable in the room. "In Cool Blood" has become a kind of Bonnie & Clyde, or Nancy & Lee album: adventurous, sexy and quite convinced of itself. The balance between the two different voices is perfectly balanced, the songs are casual but to the point. It's less about fighting capitalism this time and more about living out personal freedom. "Heavy Breathing" celebrates the joys of late-night phone sex; "Free Will" Greer sings with snotty self-confidence, as if she had just given an encroaching guy a painful kick in the soft parts: "I don't believe in free will. I just do what I feel, that is the deal, I don't believe in free will". Connoisseurs will surely hear echoes of the Delmonas or Holly Golightly. It's hard not to like this mixture of lurking garage rock and ironic poses and confessions. Chain & The Gang have created their own world with this, a fiercely bubbling petri dish of songs and stories that brings together the past and future of rock'n'roll. "Not for the weak of heart or the slow of brain, "In Cool Blood" is for the hot of blood, the quick of temper, and the hard of sleeping. Recorded in a spontaneous, ad lib session of dream led automatic writing/rocking, "In Cool Blood" was made at a Surrealist stomp session in the bowls of Olympia." - CHAIN & THE GANG manager Johnny Sincere- Format

Music's Not For Everyone
Released in 2011, Chain & The Gang's second album, like its predecessor, was once again produced by Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic Studio. The lineup is also mostly the same, with the small difference that there are now five background singers who answer (in different songs) the calls of Ian Svenonius: Tara Jane O'Neil, Veronica Ortuño, Susanna Patten, Sarah Pedal and Katy Davidson. "Why Not" challenges everyday common sense and the established rules to an energetic blues shuffle. "Detroit Music" sounds like dirty jabs and the Dirtbombs, "Detroit Music II" plays the ball on, towards a heavy monster jam. Brilliant! The title track is then again in a class of its own: to psychedelic laments familiar from the Stooges' "We Will Fail," Svenonius mocks the tastes of the naïve "I actually listen to everything" consumer: "I know you wanna share. But don't!" he spits contemptuously at their feet. In the era of Spotify & Co., Svenonius accepts the accusation of snobbery: "Does a moth know a flame, just because it's drawn to it? "Svenonius sells it all with conviction and a devilish twinkle in his eye. He means what he says, and also knows how absurd it all is. These 12 tracks serve as a bombastic backdrop for Svenonius' treatises on living the life of an anti-capitalist svengali; they're a guerrilla garage rock manifesto imbued with fever, fervour and soul." - The Quietus- Format

02. TunnelsCHUNG
Virgil Coma / Tunnels

It's all gone
The faszination of old Garage Punk records exists from the unruly will for roughness, being a fan and glanders in the music. The wish not to cut the diamond but smash it identifies Garage Punk. To clarify the chronological range we refer to the heritage of Crypt, one of the few legitimate successors from the idea of Rock'n'Roll and Punk. It is more than just an act of boys in Chucks and denim jackets but the promise that Rock'n'Roll can and should be nonconformist. The Columbian Neckties, founded 1998, are releasing 11 years after "Takeaway" their fourth album "It's all gone". Still playing the best Highspeed Garagepunk with a good pinch of MC5 Rock the world ever listened to. Every fan of New Bomb Turks, Guitar Wolf, TV Killers or Cellophane Suckers knows what I am talking about and will put this record on the turntable. It is recommended to the rest.- Format

Takeaway

Why change your moves?
Yes!!

COLUMBIAN NECKTIES
Yes Ma´am
Quoting Gregor Samsa from Sounds Of Subterrania Records: '' Let's keep this simple: Columbian Neckties is the Band I've had the most personal experience with, as a label. On top of that, they are one of the few Garagepunk-outfits, who can simultaneously count Names such as Tim Warren (Crypt Records),Alfred Bradford (Green Hell) as well as Lars Krogh (Bad Afro) amongst their die-hard Fans, apart from myself that is, of course! Enough reason to be straight-up subjective when it comes to this band and that's exactly my point here. To me, Columbian Neckties is Europe's finest Garagepunk band and definitely in the top 5 internationally. No one shreds the guitar faster than Henrik and no one comes close to Jeppes vocal delivery. Everything just seems to fit perfectly with the Columbian Neckties. This is Punk – Punk and not Rock in disguise. Garage will always be Garage and that means getting your hands dirty. Their shows never fall short from being total revelations and are cramped with energy to an extent, that you could illuminate the Autobahn at night, if we were able to feed that energy into our power circuits. Most of all, Columbian Neckties are real! Not just Students jamming around, No Dressmen, no 'we'll-do-whatever-the-industry-can-sell' – types, but rather the boys from nextdoor who happen to play mindblowing Garagepunk. This is what counts and sticks to both brain and heart. After a 3-year break, Columbian Neckties is now finally releasing their new single ''Yes Ma'am'' and once again taking it to all those stages, that mean the world to me.''- Format

We are the Courettes
"Here are The Courettes " - The first sign of life from The Courettes struck like a bomb in 2014. The first edition was sold out within a month and had to be reprinted three times, so far. Their music led the brazilian-danish duo to tour throughout Europe. Invitations to all major Sixtiespunk festivals followed. The numerous shows prove the obvious - the two are made for the stage. Naming two of their legendary shows: for once their real loud and illegal balcony show during Reeperbahn Festival (including a roadblock by the police) or on the other hand - their performance less than 24 hours after their son Lennon was born. You just cannot deny, The Courettes are a born live band. Even greater, that they have taken their time recording the second album "We are the Courettes". Together with producer Kim Kix (known for his band Powersolo) they have thrown such a big bang into the pit that you have no choice but to get your Chelsea boots out of the closet and swing your legs in style. The Courettes have redefined their musical spectrum with some sixties Girl Pop and Soul, without losing their typical dirty fuzz sound. "We are the Courettes" wades so deep in the sixties sound, that even the Brazilian horror movie legend Coffin Joe cast a few spells for this album. As if that is not enough, on 17.03. with "Voodoo Doll", the first single from the album, will be a real sensation, rather a revolution. More on that later, so keep your eyes open.- Format

CRO(W)S
Durty bunny
WHY CRO(W)S? Chris Wollard(Hot Water Music) and Bill Clower(radon),living together at the time, wanted to start a band. After an unsuccessful attempt to turn Rumbleseat into a rock-n-roll band, they formed The SHERYL CRO(W)MAGS in early 2000. Along the way they started a label, released 1 single and toured with Unitas up the East coast. Now with their debut full-length, and a slight name-change, they are ready to blow your heads off. Adding in the greatness of Kaleb Stewart(As Friends Rust) and James Ross(also of Radon) was a wise move to round out this ''buddy band'' quartet. That aside, it's impossible to ignore the presence of Chris Wollard of Hot Water Music. Bringing his trademark whisky, brutally heartfelt voice and the lyrical style so cherished by Hot Water's fans, Durty Bunny is strikingly similar to older Hot Water Music material, a sound greatly missed by some of their fans. But it isn't a Hot Water Music CD. Cro(w)s have their own sound, which is especially present on `There's Nothing Wrong,' and `#1 Hit.' Fans of the earlier, rawer sound of HWM will definitely appreciate this dark and powerful band. LP have 1unreleased bonussong.- Format
