QUICK, BILL
Maravillosa gente
[engl] Mysterious Bill Quick?.this guy was son of North- American dad and Venezuelan mum, and landed in Madrid in the early 70s, spending most of his time playing music and manufacturing leather belts and other stuff that he later sold at the popular Rastro flea market in Madrid, meeting point for all hippies of the time. He somehow got in touch with famous producer Alain Milhaud, who got really impressed by his work and quickly offered him a deal for recording a long- play to be released in Milhauds own Explosion label. Then Bill recruited some of top studio musicians and foreign friends who were also living in Madrid at the time; the list of people who play on the recordings is impressive: Salvador Dominguez & Chema Pellicó (ex- Cerebrum), Rafa Gálvez (later on Vainica Dobles backing band), Frank Rojas (Sangre), Jess Lam (Jess & James)?and up to eleven musicians joined Bill in the recording studio. As a result, ?Maravillosa gente? (Beautiful people) was recorded. Ranging from beautiful, introspective, acoustic solo tracks like ?Beautiful People?, ?Only the weather? or the acid- folk of ?Winters gonna come? to full backing- band hard- edged ones like ?Take me away?, ?Somebody? and the folk- rock sounding of ?With you, Lord? or ?I sing this song?, the album is a real treat from start to finish. It has an awesome sound and amazing production (it was recorded at one of the most advanced Spanish recording studios at the time), along with top musicianship and Bills amazing songwriting. A real big ticket that was absolutely ignored in Spain at the time, and even today remains unknown to most of folk- rock collectors and fans. Curious enough, the album got released in Brazil as well (with poor sales again), with a different cover artwork. Now this is reissued for the first time, including a booklet with pictures and detailed liner notes telling the wonderful and strange story of this mysterious musician and carefully remastered sound. Outer carton slimcase.- Format

RAINBOW PRESS
There's a war on
[engl] Cool US'68 psychedelic concept album with all the right moves: solid songwriting, refreshing harmonies, studio effects, organ, fuzz guitar, electric piano, sunshine / baroque touches?Think Rainy Daze, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Doors. The Rainbow Press evolved from The Continental Divide, a college band from New York comprised of members from two previous British Invasion groups: The Group and The Specs. They were Bill Yergin on drums, Dave Troup on bass, Larry Milton on electric piano and 12- string guitar, Marc Ellis on guitar, Charlie Osborne on organ and Joe Groff on vocals. All the members sang vocal harmonies and the twin electric piano / organ action gave the band an unusual and cool sound. In 1968, Audio Fidelity approached them and a contract was secured. The band changed their name to the more groovy sounding The Rainbow Press and sessions for their first album started at Radio City in New York. ''There's a war on'' saw the light in 1968 on the Mr. G label (the ''hip'' branch of Audio Fidelity) and it's hard to believe this perfectly recorded and sounding psychedelic beauty was recorded by college students!- Format

ROKY ERICKSON
Gremlins Have Pictures

RUPERT'S PEOPLE
Hold On
[engl] Evolving from The Sweet Feeling, a band who rubbed shoulders with The Beatles and most of the stars of the nascent Swingin? London scene (due to band member Steve Brendell work for Brian Epsteins Nems Enterprises), Ruperts People were the quintessential UK 60s mod- psych band. They had the look, they had many famous friends (Paul McCartney was one of their biggest fans) and a set of terrific tunes. But somehow they never made it big time. On this vinyl compilation (1966- 69), you?ll find most of their legendary 45 sides, from freakbeat / mod- psych anthems - ?Hold On? and ?Dream in my mind? - , to amazing psych pop numbers - the phasing fuelled ?I can show you?, ?Charles Brown? and ?All so long ago? (the later taken from their first 45 under the Sweet Feeling name) - plus delicious flower- power / baroque psychedelia - ?Prologue to a magic world? and ?Reflections of Charles Brown. Some rare recordings have also been included: ?Flying High? is a previously unreleased instrumental taken from a demo acetate, that makes it here on vinyl for the first time. ?Reflecting? and ?You can?t always get what you want? are live tracks recorded in 1969 and show the most progressive sound of the band with long guitar / organ passages. The confusing Ruperts People story (with links to bands like Les Fleur De Lys and The Iveys / Badfinger) is set straight on the extensive liner notes by band member Rod Lynton, included on a 4- page insert along with many unseen pictures. Remastered sound, old- styled backflap sleeve. 180gr vinyl.- Format

SAUCEDO, RICK
Heaven was blue
[engl] First ever legit vinyl reissue of Rick Saucedo's mind- expanding, one- man, multi- tracked private press miracle in sound from 1978 ''Heaven Was Blue'' drifts in the same sonic milieu as fellow travelers in '60s square peg joy Darius, Marcus, D.R. Hooker (without the lounge allusions), or late period psych adventurers Michael Angelo and Bobb Trimble- and his concentration and vision equals or exceeds these international underground heroes. Rick Saucedo is an internationally- known Elvis tribute artist, actor and singer- songwriter from Chicago. In 1978, after some years of doing his Elvis show, he decided he wanted to have his own identity, recording an album with his own songs. The idea of ''Heaven Was Blue'' was born while he was doing the role of Elvis in the Broadway musical ''The Legend Lives On''. Influenced by The Beatles and Pink Floyd, Rick created ''Heaven Was Blue'' for himself, as he didn't care about the music of the time. All instruments on the album were played by Rick with a couple of friends helping him out. Songs like ''Reality'', which was written in a graveyard just after the passing of Mr. Presley or ''In My Mind'', which dated back to 1967, written just after ''Sgt. Pepper'' had come out, are prime examples of dreamy acid psych with Lennon- esque vocals, lysergic guitars & studio effects. There's also a couple of fuzz rockers with a strong '50s vibe and then there's the album centerpiece: the impressive 18- minute ''Heaven Was Blue'' suite, which Rick envisioned as an ''acid trip dream''. In words of Patrick Lundborg: ''?Saucedo pulls it off. Somehow like how you turn the wheels on a kaleidoscope, new melodies, guitar figures and arrangements emerge out of the old ones every three minutes, each sequence more swirling and enchanting that the last, with a sense of progression throughout.''- Format

SELDA
Selda (1979)
[engl] Imagine if Julia Child had marched against Vietnam, stood on the steps of the Pentagon & placed a flower in a gun barrel. Selda Bagcan's later records have that same cross of easygoing motherly warmth & righteous anger. This 1979 album (technically her 4th, although 6 of these songs were also released on her 3rd), was recorded when Turkey was at its most politically polarized. Selda was sentenced to a total of over 500 years in prison right about the time it came out. A pile of acoustic guitars & baglamas all going off at once under a blanket of reverb, with lyrics about blood, wood, mountains, families, and desperate troubles, so it's a thick squirt for a folk album. Selda's voice can either be sultry or really surge with emotion, and when she does belt one, it's oddly high & completely unique. Her reward was the love of Turkey's people, but also 9 trials and 3 prison terms from the right wing military government of the 80s.- Format

SELDA
Vurulduk Ey Halkim Unutma Bizi
[engl] There were female Turkish folk singers before Selda Bagcan, but none whose hot- blooded voice carried such righteously angry words & none who also accompanied themselves on guitar. She began her career singing at her brothers' Beethoven nightclub in Ankara while she went to school for physics during the day. Her 1st album had help from the cream of the crazy Istanbul pop scene, and cuts from the same sessions were also released on this 2nd one. While the direction is folky overall, there's fuzz, zooming synthesizers, and heavy flute to be found. When Selda performed the title track in 1977 in a coastal town not far from Istanbul, her protest lyrics, though taken from an old poem, got her heckled by audience members who screamed that she should go back to Moscow! Find out why this brawny mama couldn't be stopped by a military government that put her on trial 9 times, and could call herself the bitter voice of the Turkish people.- Format

SHAG
1969
[engl] SHAG was born from the ashes of garage band The Shags (of ''Stop and Listen'' fame). In the late 60s, they moved from Milwaukee to California, where they played at all the major venues and ballrooms, supporting famous bands like Jefferson Airplane and The Who. In 1969, the band recorded a demo at Pacific High Recordings in San Francisco, at the same time as the Grateful Dead were recording their classic ''Working Man's Dead'' album there. The demo was in fact a fully finished album of bombastic psychedelia, acid- rock and proto- prog with loud fuzz- wah guitars, long tracks, crazy percussion and killer flute. Here's the first ever vinyl reissue of these lost recordings. Master tape sound, insert with liner notes and photos.- Format

SHAHRAM
Shahram
[engl] You know how record nerds are. They?ll gladly tell you that a dawdling Moldovian choir of 70 year old grandmothers is the next brick in your psychfunksplosion journey. But Shahram Shabpareh is the real thing. Colorful arrangements of blurting horns, evil bass grooves, cheesy organs & thick strata of overlapping percussion instruments going off like microwave popcorn. As the leader of an Iranian 60s garage band, the Rebels, and later a 70s solo singer, Shabpareh was never happy just tossing a few moves from Abba in front of whatever was on the local charts already. He wrote & recorded hard rock & funky piano riffs that were built bulldozer tough & would?ve stuck out in an American trailer park or a London pub just as easily as they did in Tehran. Not that he wasn?t afraid to put someone elses idea to good use, as he certainly makes superb use of the Kinks? chords from ?You Really Got Me?. Its more that Shahrams rock cojones have caused him to make blistering music again & again over the years, with little regard for where it comes from. Heres a well- deserved compilation of his best tracks, with insert/booklet with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl.- Format

SHOCK
Shock!
[engl] We are very excited to present what it's for us the major discovery in the Spanish Psych- Prog collector scene: a previously unreleased album from 1970 by this obscure Spanish garage- psych band. Until now, Shock were a total mystery. They only released one 45 back at the time (the killer acid- fuzz punker ''No se puede ser Superman'') and nothing was known about the band...until we tracked them down. We discovered that prior to their 45 release, they recorded a whole album which was never released. Shock's music is underground garage- psychedelia with crude acid- fuzz guitar, effects, English vocals...think of Agua de Regaliz, early Pan & Regaliz, Cerebrum or even obscure Brazilian bands such as Tobruk but with a more primitive sound. The album features ten songs including the original versions of the two tracks later re- recorded for their only 45: ''No se puede ser Superman'' (titled here ''I'm being mad'', it's a different and superior English sung version) and ''I want to laugh'' (a longer version than the one included on the 45). Remastered from the original 2- track tape (which is unfortunately not in perfect condition, but more than good enough), insert with detailed liner notes in English / Spanish, 180gr vinyl. CD comes with colour booklet.- Format

Stone Garden
[engl] Stone Garden were a heavy psychedelic band from the Midwest, famous releasing in 1969 one of the best heavy- psych 45s ever, ?Oceans inside me?, for the same label as the legendary Fraction (Angelus). Between 1969 and 1971 they also recorded a bunch of tracks which never saw the light of day until the mid- 90s, when the great Rockadelic label issued them in a limited edition vinyl album. Out of print for many years, we present a new edition of the Stone Garden album featuring new artwork and insert with lot of pictures and liner notes. Furious, ultra- primitive hard- psychedelic rock in Sabbath and Blue Cheer vein, highly recommended to anyone into obscure 70s doom and hard- rock sounds.- Format

SUBWAY
Subway
[engl] Subway was a duo, consisting of an American and an UK- guy, who released their only album in France as 200 vinyls in 1972. There they lived and played both for some time as street musicians, who played their compositons even at Parisien subway, hence the bandname. Unfortunately the album fell through, so the unsold vinyls were melted, as usual in France at this time. The band presented a phantastic psych- folk music with prog- rock- elements. An absolutely top- album, which hopefully now will reach a bigger audience, as the original LP is very rare.- Format

Nippon Guitars
[engl] Legendary is a word too often used when writing about musicians. Takeshi Terauchi is no myth, more an elemental force and surely a nominee for the status of Living National Treasure – a first for a rock musician in Japan. While not exactly well known in the West, he has received praise over the years from artists as diverse as the Ventures and Jello Biafra. You don’t want to mess with Terry, as he is commonly known. An 8th Dan of the Wado school of Karate and a Zen master of the Zuiganji temple, he is also a pioneer in the history of Japanese guitar music, record producer, author and businessman who still finds time to play for charity. Terauchi is a hard drinking (or used to be), guitar-shredding maverick who ruled his band with an iron fist while his free hand gave the tremolo arm lessons in tensile strength. His early recordings date back to the late 1950s, with the country and western outfit Jimmy Tokita and the Mountain Playboys. Now in his early 70s, he is still going strong. Terauchi has released a vast number of records in his long career, embracing country, surf, Hawaiian, rock’n’roll, funk, classical and more. He rode the wave of the Eleki boom, a musical style encompassing surf and beat instrumentals. The fuse was lit by the Ventures’ first trip to Japan in 1962, although the trend started in earnest in 1964, when Terauchi and media promoter Nabe Pro organised a huge bash headlined by the Animals and the Ventures at the Kousei Nenkin Kaikan in Tokyo. This was the year that Takeshi Terauchi and the Blue Jeans released their debut album “Korezo Surfing” (Let's Go Surfing). Sales of electric guitars in Japan rocketed, the demand so great that even the burgeoning electrical corporations produced their first models. There were several bands playing Eleki – notably the Spacemen and Yuzo Kayama and the Launchers – but, armed with his custom red Fender Jaguar, Takeshi Terauchi and his Blue Jeans led the vanguard. Terauchi rejects suggestions that he was influenced by the Ventures, although they were certainly no hindrance to his rise, and he often played a Mosrite, a gift from the band. He is adamant that his music emanates from Japan, and the tracks on this collection stand as a testament to the fact. Many are versions of traditional Japanese folk songs (Minyo), a style that became much copied. Terauchi’s speedy “shredding” technique could be said to echo Tsugaru shamisen, a unique blues-like style of percussive, semi-improvised playing from northern Japan. He revisited some of these standards for his 1974 album “Tsugaru Jongara” with the re-formed Blue Jeans. Here is a selection of some of the finest beat instrumentals, traditional-infused nuggets and later raw Tsugaru-influenced workouts from his long and varied career. By Howard Williams- Format
