    DEAD FINKS

The Death and Resurrection of Johnathan Cowboy

    [engl]
Dead Finks is the musical output of New Zealand-born duo Joseph Thomas and Erin Violet. Formed in Sydney sometime in the late '10s, it's current incarnation is a four-piece rock band based in Berlin. On The Death & Resurrection Of Jonathon Cowboy the band showcase an incredible knack for writing catchy and unique melodies. They play punk music in the tradition of Wire, Sonic Youth and The Fall (whose "Frightened" is covered here, recorded the night of Mark E. Smith's death) and take cues from contemporaries like Parquet Courts and Iceage in their efforts to manipulate and expand upon what it means to be a punk group in 2021. Written and recorded in Sydney, late 2018 (shortly before the duo moved to Berlin) the LP serves as a strange prediction of the horrible state of the world today. Songs about war, plagues, pissing, police, David Cronenberg’s Videodrome and the climate burning. Its a sea of wiry guitars and thumping bass that plants itself inside your inner ear and doesn’t leave. Thomas’ smart-ass delivery and literary style with odd references abounding, sees a return to something similarly touched upon in his previous group Trust Punks. However, on this LP Dead Finks feel more straight-forward in the best kind of way. Stripped down rock music that knows what it is and smashes you over the head.

    SUEVES, THE

    Tears of Joy

    [engl]
“European” Pressing, after the pressing on the bands own Magicatalog Records was sold out in a wink, here is another pressing! 300 copies on Magicatalog came with a brilliant screenprinted sleeve, expansive on discogs now. Here is a official second pressing of this record. We already did their first album few years back, yeah we are in love with the noisy garage punk smashers of THE SUEVES. It’s lame to talk about how fantastic this 3rd album is, so here is what the experts had to say.... „Simplicity, in all its ramshackle glory, is one of the charms of garage rock. That appeal can wear off quickly though when a band’s songwriting is subpar and/or the execution is poor. The Sueves new record is the perfect example of how rewarding it can be when a band challenges itself; when a band is not afraid to go beyond self- or other- imposed boundaries of the genre; when a band invests a little more time in writing and recording music. On Tears of Joy, The Sueves sound more layered, diverse and dynamic than most garage bands, but also in comparison to their past selves. They do so without sacrificing any of the energy and excitement of their earlier work. Mop Bucket is a modern garage rock classic. Short and fast songs like Alexxxa, Find The Right Fit and Stare will draw in punk fans.

    SONS OF CYRUS

    Can you Dig It

    50 KAITENZ, THE

    s/t

    [engl]
This is a Pre-Order. Releasedate is the 29.june 2021. If you think carefully about why Turbonegro, Guitar Wolf, The Dirtbombs, or even the entire Crypt Band catalog are of such authoritative relevance, it can all be traced back to two simple facts. Fact one. They understood their style of playing rock’n’roll. This realization sounds succinct at first, after all, any band would claim this. Only in reality most of them fail miserably. First copying others and then copying themselves is no innovation and just adds another copy to the meter records, no “most authentic” or original equipment helps, because it fails because of the songs. Fact two, and maybe this is the most underestimated factor, is the lack of humor. Without humor, you can’t play good rock’n’roll. Why am I writing this? I have seen the light, THE 50 KAITENZ from Osaka play 60s Punk as I wish it and that in a perfection that makes me dizzy. Alone the transitions from the chorus to the verse are so cleverly placed that you slap your thighs with joy, without being able to speak a single word of Japanese, you catch yourself intoning the songs loudly at an inappropriate room volume and even start to play the obligatory air guitar with pleasure. THE 50 KAITENZ, of course, don’t play pure 60s punk.

    AR-KAICS, THE

    Live in the Shit

[engl] DIG! The Ar-Kaics’ latest offering, Live in the Shit—an unrelenting assault recorded live in 2020 in Richmond, Virginia during the waning days of normalcy. This set combines familiar tunes, old and new, along with their first live performance of the unreleased protest song, “Outsider”. Songs run together at a Ramones It's Alive pace—“Sick & Tired” into “You’ll Be Mine” into “No Vacancy” and “Some People"—that propels the set towards a crescendo of damaged-psych oblivion via “Distemper”, “Easy” and “Long Way Down”. For all the out-of-tune guitars, fried vintage gear, and bum notes, the performance is tighter than 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag—you can hear the ‘Kaics bustin’ out! Live in the Shit is a comprehensive demonstration of both where The Ar-Kaics have been and where they’re heading...just as soon as they can!

JACKSON REID BRIGGS & THE HEATERS

    Waiting In A Corner

[engl] Imagine a world where The Saints held onto the raw-throated, full-throttle rock’n’roll of their mighty first three albums. Where Radio Birdman are rightly held up as one of the all-time great bands. Where the Wipers never left the driving punk rock of ‘Is This Real?’ behind for the post-kraut-psych-whatever of the (admittedly still totally ragin’) ‘Youth Of America’, and simply kickstarted a revolution. That’s the sort of reality where Jackson Reid Briggs & The Heaters would be best appreciated. Where driving rhythms, crunching power chords and the sound of a man howling ‘YOU’RE GONNA GET EATEN ALIVE’ are the adrenaline-pumping soundtrack to the everyday. Where an album like ‘Waiting In A Corner’ is heralded as a goddamn classic upon arrival, and worshipped as a vital instrument in setting souls on fire and lifting spirits everywhere. Where… aww, you get the idea. Because Melbourne-based Briggs and his thrillingly rambunctious collective have made one of those albums - their fifth - where all you can do is play it over and over, thrilling to the ordered chaos of songs like ‘Too Many Years’ while swooning to the anthemic likes of ‘If You Only Knew’. There are some types of music that Australia just does better. Garage? Punk? Yeah, something like that. ‘Waiting In A Corner’ is the latest example, and holy fuck, it’s an instant wonder. If only rock’n’roll could always be this good.

    Knowso

    Rare Auld Trip/ Psychological Garden

    [engl]
All caught up with last August’s blast of herky-jerky darkness from Knowso? Don’t get too comfy, now - nine months later, they’re back with another eight hits of visceral smarts and discombobulating fury. Sounding, as ever, like Big Black firing pellets of snot at their Cleveland forebears Devo, ‘Rare Auld Trip/Psychological Garden’ finds them picking up where they left off with ‘Specialtronics Green Vision’. This being the best part of a year on from that excellent debut, though, they sound wiser, snarkier and more pissed off than ever before - good news all round, then. Opener ‘Boredom In The Valley’ reintroduces their signature tricks but feels more focused; a sub-two minute blast of staggered beats powered by the gnarliest-sounding bass this side of Bob Weston, and a disaffected vocal styling that you’d be tempted to call nihilist if you couldn’t sense the number of fucks given beneath the impassive facade. They pick up the pace with ‘Staring At The Spiral’, which almost sounds like the Buzzcocks unravelling at the seams while a Vogon watches on, before crashing into the smash’n’grab antics of ‘The Plants’ - one of the record’s clear highlights and a frantic, dizzying trip. Along the way are enough bon mots and smartarse quips too make you wonder if they’re taking this as seriously as they should.

Thanks to the brilliant brilliant (!!!) record label Girlsville, who put this compilation together for a tape release we - Bachelor Records - can be part of this vinyl record! This tape was just too good to be just out on the tiny format, so we asked Girlsville to have this pressed on wax. Together we did 1000 copies, 200 of which on red vinyl which is only available directly from the labels. This comp has new and exclusive music from bands like Osees, Gen Pop, Germ House, and UK Gold. Some stuff that had fallen out of print (The Primitives 2016 cover of "Been Hiding" by The Aislers Set), and then some songs bands gave us just to be a part of it. Artwork and design concept: Anna Jo Beck. Mastered by Patrick Haight, Proceeds to benefit Prism Health. "Prism Health is committed to offering safe, compassionate, and affirming primary and mental health care to all members of the LGBTQ+ community." Also included: Danny And The Darleans, UV-TV, Hood Rats, Maxines, Special Interest, Blues Lawyer, Mr. And The Mrs., Virvon Varvon, Andrew Anderson, Becky & The Politicians, and Stiff Love. „Girlsville hits it out of the park with this one. This comp is absolutely killer and features such heavy hitters as GEN POP, STIFF LOVE, and even a new track by OSEES (the newly renamed/revived OH SEES), as well as sixteen more tracks.

    SPREAD JOY

    Spread Joy

[engl] There are times when you discover a debut release, give it a few honest plays, and simply look forward to what's next. Then again, there's the rare occasion when an album flat out smacks you in the face with sheer brilliance, demanding repeat listens. Such is the case with the self titled debut from Spread Joy. The Chicago group, consisting of some familiar faces from Negative Scanner and Human Beat, were due to play their first show in March 2020. While that moment has been postponed indefinitely, Spread Joy have quietly crafted a future classic. These ten tracks are a remarkably simple and near perfect distillation of the 'Pink Flag'-era Wire sound - giving way to frenzied No Wave dashes while executed with a speed/precision that approaches hardcore. Oh, and there's no denying that the mix is anchored by the vocal prowess & persona of Briana Hernandez, in a performance evoking visions of greats like Su Tissue and Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Ten tracks in fourteen glorious minutes - as if Spread Joy have synthesized the best moments of the last 40-odd years of punk into one timeless pairing of tracks. If ya think it's too short, you're wrong. Just flip the record over and let the Spread Joy sink in.

    BATTLEBEATS

    Search & Destroy

    [engl]
To cite Faster & Louder: "The sound here is raw and ferocious, with songs alternating between the wild, blown-out rock and roll of tracks like "You're My Wild One" and "I Wanna Break Away" and the snot-drenched rage of "She's So Overrated". This is exactly the way lo-fi garage punk ought to be: cheaply-recorded, brimming with untamed energy, and stripped to the essence of three-chord simplicity. Songs for the most part clock in under two minutes - and even at seventeen tracks, the album leaves me wanting more. Crank up the volume and make like the '90s never ended!" Andresa plays everything on his own - working with a guitar plugged into an overdrive pedal and a 15-watt amp, a floor tom-snare drum set, tambourine, and no bass. The band story sounds like a budget rock fairytale, young fanboy Andresa touring with prior band Japan, going to a bar after a show to meet his idol Fifi of TEENGENERATE! Showing drawings and pledge for song lyrics, Fifi is overwhelmed and happy to share the same instincts for rocknroll and power pop. Like a long lost ninja son, he suggest the band name for his new indonesian friend and BATTLEBEATS are born. He got his first 45 "You Stabbed Me In The Back" out on Post Party Deppression in the US in late 2020. You may have heard the chords before, but this Rock and Roll rawness is turning you inside out and you feel the TEENTRASH kid in you just going wild.

    PINK ROOM

    Putain Royale

    [engl]
The moment has finally arrived, The new album from the Belgian rockers Pink Room is out. The album is called ‘Putain Royale’ and is out on ZOE ZOE RECORDS, ROCKERILL RECORDS & SIX TONNES DE CHAIR RECORDS. A while ago we got the first video and single from the track ‘Losing’ which was a gorgeous kick in the face and the first track after the intro (by Nathan Roche) and it is a perfect start on ‘Putain Royale’, heavy garageriffs and some wild psychedelic solo work at the end of the track. On ‘Losing’ Cis Deman (Stake) and Bart Baele (Tubelight, Speedozer) are guests. For ‘Stay White’ they change to a higher gear and go faster and wilder, a track filled with fast paced energy. By now everybody already understands that this album will be one intese chunk of energy. ‘Hail Satan’ may be the most accesible track, if you could call anything accesible on this album, the riff on ‘Hail Satan’ is catchy and the vocals screech their way into my brain. Tijl Van De Casteele from Whorses en Jonas Calu from Little Trouble Kids doig guest percussion on ‘Hail Satan’. Their is a clip coming for ‘Hail Satan’ and their will be a lot of fire in it which is cool because fire is cool. There is no time for a breather (on the whole album) or a break to drink a hot cup of cacao because ‘Live Laugh Love’ is again fast, loud, and like almost all of their tracks it is adrenaline boosting (is that a word? it is now?).

    FREAK GENES

    Power Station

[engl] Freak Genes continue their descent into angular electronics with Power Station. Musicians are replaced by machines, natural sounds are swapped for noises. The result is synthetic pop for problem times. Charlie Murphy (Internal Credit / Isolation) and Andrew Anderson (Proto Idiot / KAKE?) orchestrate affairs, wrangling synths, drum machines, guitars and found sounds. Think 154-era Wire but with a reduced budget, or DAF minus the disco. The album was recorded in bedrooms and borrowed spaces from 2018 to 2020. It was mixed and mastered by Mikey Young. Formed in 2016, Freak Genes previous albums are Playtime, Qwak Qwak and III. They’ve performed in both shitty and swanky venues across Europe. They’ll be on stage again in 2021, pandemics and other global catastrophes depending.

TJ CABOT & THEE ARTIFICIAL REJECTS

    s/t

[engl] Recorded with ONE $5 microphone, the 11 all but originals just blowin away and spit the bootleg agent orange right on your skin. It starts of with "Cut it down", a MC5-style rocker and ends on Side A shuts down with DEAD MOON, fireside accoustic going off duty "It Ain' t Fun (in the City of the Whiplash)". Inbetween you will witness a punk meltdown, pick your grave left or right of early SPACESHITS ("Occipital Neuralgia"), KAJUN SS (" I am the Enemy") or stinking fish! On the B-Side run, the jaytard joy of Single A-Sides goes on, with some only-the-GINO & THE GOONS-can-do-it smashers, more weirdo garage rockn'n' roll of those STEVE MCQUEEN wannabees and pots and pans proto-punk with some occasional drunken ramblings. On top, those Matadors of Trash unveil "Nowhere To Go" as if REAL KIDS play an unwritten PACK song. Magic mushroom mastering by James O´Toole of TOTALOUTTACONTROLLER and additional nitpicking vinyl mastering by A-HULEHULE and helpless BARRATO in Berlin. Limited to 300 copies, 200 black, 100 in clear vinyl with black swirls. Resort your lists, ya all - this is THE ALIEN SNATCH! contribution to the Budget Rock class of 2020

    SWEET REAPER

    Sidekick

[engl] SWEET REAPER invasion #2! They got dropped by a new republic spaceship right into a tempel of the polynesian-power pop death cult. Sidekick is another confession between the skating SPITS, the RADIOACTVITY jet stream and the graverobbin´ HEX DISPENSERS and an evocation of insanely well written 45rpm power pop punk pearls. The themes range from UFOs to black widows and you can chew on bubblegum, astro-mushrooms and broken surf boards until the beach blows up.

    MUD CITY MANGLERS

    Give Me the Hammer

[engl] The Manglers started making their trademark grimy garage rock in 1996, the band still finds plenty to fuel in rock ’n’ roll. “Were as pissed off now as we were 20 years ago,” “Maybe more.” They just love playing music together — drinking beer and playing loud noises,” This is there second album and it’s a real pounder, they should be called Motorhead City Manglers.

    STAR PARTY

    Demo 2020

[engl] Star Party is a new Washington State group formed during the quarantine days of 2020. Carrie Brennan and Ian Corrigan (Gen Pop, Vexx) have joined forces to create something new - a sound they proclaim as "saturated, misty coastal rock". Their four track demo is comprised of two originals and covers of Shop Assistants and Cher (by way of Bob Dylan). It's a sound that draws inspiration from eighties Scottish punk and noisy American dream pop of the nineties, with a dash of Seamus Heaney and Alex Taylor hanging in White Sands, New Mexico for lyrical inspiration. Star Party have turned in a curious and compelling set of pop tunes on this 2020 demo and are already hard at work on new material for the brighter days ahead. Pro-duplicated cassette edition of 300 with pink shell and double sided J-card featuring artwork from Star Party's own Carrie Brennan.

    COWBOYS, THE

    Lovers in Marble

[engl] Continuing on in their ever-prolific and sensational run of releases, The Cowboys are back with five tracks of pure analog gold on "Lovers in Marble". Recorded by the band in Cincinnati and mixed with John Hoffman (Vacation), this EP finds The Cowboys as cool and collected as ever, with Keith Harman's driving piano lines and vocal range atop the mix. It's quite the divine distillation of garage pop melody, (think 'Loaded' era VU, Walker Brothers, or Emitt Rhodes) given a sinister coating of The Kinks and Syd Barrett, curious production flourishes intact. The Cowboys have truly spent their quarantine days well, pairing brilliant pop compositions with some of the best instrumentation and recording quality across their ever-expanding discography. "Lovers in Marble" is a pivotal Cowboys release, perhaps their most accessible, but also most refined piece of work yet. A perfect sonic respite from the long, dark days of 2020.

    ZERO ZEROES

    s/t

    [engl]
Zero Zero: a sadly unlamented 1990s anthology comic series published by Fantagraphics, which published some of the most batshit underground cartoonists of the time, as well as some of the smartest satirists and grossest gross-out artists. It was briefly incredible; it stopped before it ran out of steam; it was punk as fuck. Zero Zeroes: just one of those ungoogleable band names, scuppered a tad by the existence of Californian ‘70s punkas The Zeroes. But this German band are definitely their own beast - OK, there are touches of San Diego legend John Reis in their DNA (the garage-centric power chords are pure Rocket From The Crypt; the relentless drive of the guitars calls to mind the wild focus of Hot Snakes), but they’re here to make a racket their own way, and it’s scintillating. So why mention the comic? Well, aside from the similarity in the names, there’s something about this gleefully menacing racket that just feels like it draws from the same well; equal parts smart, serious, cartoonish, and drawn to a devilish sense of reckless abandon that you’ll only find if you really know where to look for it. Whether making fist-clenching punk anthems from unsolved murder cases (as they do on the rollicking ‘Tamam Shud’) or simply slapping you in the face with killer riffage and even better tunes (‘Mouth Full Of Snakes’, ‘Dark Thoughts’.

    TRACY BRYANT

    Between Us

[engl] L.A. songwriter Tracy Bryant released his third studio album just about a year ago and the first follow-up comes in the form of a limited single split between RSTB faves Six Tonnes de Chair (France) and Third Eye Stimuli (Aus). “Between Us” was cut during the sessions for Hush but Bryant notes that it didn’t fit with the album, and I’d agree. The melancholy tone of Hush isn’t as present in the sun-streaked pop bounce of “Between Us.” Instead there’s a sense of motion and crisp air. The song’s not jubilant, but its trading wistful for winking which seems like a natural fit for Bryant. Despite its studio sheen, the simple setup feels like it shares a bit of DNA with Cronin and Segall around their humble Trouble In Mind days. Bryant hangs the song on the strength of a hummable acoustic hook, sweater-hugged harmonies, and a the kind of natural saunter that endears a song almost immediately. With a lyrical smirk at someone’s know-it-all hijinks, the song is pretty relatable too.

    JOHNNY CASINO

    Vibrations, yours and mine

[engl] Australian rock great JOHNNY CASINO has released his new album ‘Vibrations, yours and mine’. “Living in Spain I have found myself playing a lot of solo concerts all throughout Spain and into Europe, so I had the idea to record a bunch of songs in this more intimate stripped back way. I went into EstudioTigruss in Els Poblets Spain with nothing more than a guitar and a handful of ideas in my hands and mind, I sat down in front of the microphone and started singing and playing almost exactly as I do when I play solo, 3 or 4 hours later I had recorded 12 songs in a live performance kinda way.

    Knowso

    Specialtronics Green Vision

    [engl]
Ever since Rocket From The Tombs gave way to Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys, Cleveland’s been producing endless shots of adrenaline courtesy of the wildest, weirdest sounds around. Knowso may not have much sonically in common with their city’s elder statesmen, but they’re following in the same spiritual tradition, blasting away with a take on punk rock that’s tense, spiky and powerful. Following on from their ‘Look At The Chart’ 12” for California’s premier trash-rock stable Neck Chop, and a 7” for Total Punk, ‘Specialtronics Green Vision’ is their debut album - and as full-lengths go, it’s a helluva first offering. Cuts like ‘Calamine’ echo the likes of Devo in their jerked-out fury, but whereas there’s a whole raft of slopcore bands in recent years who’ve focused on the other-worldly side of Mothersbaugh and co., Knowso rub their angular tendencies against clenched-teeth riffage and a brutal sense of righteous outrage. The effect is somewhere in between Steve Albini’s more pointed rackets, Black Flag in both ‘weirdo freakout’ and ‘perfect slice of fury’ modes, and (unexpectedly) even the screwy rhetoric of Welsh wonders Future Of The Left. They have a killer CV - Knowso boast members of Cruelster, Perverts Again and Cloud Nothings among their line-up - but still, this is a record that sounds everything and nothing like those bands, with a healthy number of bonus ingredients thrown in.
