    ALDI OST

    s/t

[engl] "Aldi Ost: the debut of the male-fronted punk discounter. With a sympathetic and healthy pissedness, the distorted vocals wail their way through the seven songs, over the cutting surf guitar of the early Dead Kennedys and a rhythm fraction that just reigns hard! Live is the highlight when the singer's jugular veins burst during the last song! FFO: sweaty basement shows, dusty bridge shows, awesome guitar banging (not meant like solos and stuff like that), hate cops, hate SUVs! NFFO: Cops in SUVs!"

    2014 - 2017

[engl] If I told you the career-spanning collection of Halle, German’s drum and bass duo Battra//, 2014-2017, began with a sample of Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting, you might not believe me. Or, in the worst of all potential reactions, it might turn you off to listening to it in general. But then you’d miss out on some truly face-melting powerviolence, and I don’t want that for you. [engl] Nine months after it's premiere finally physically consumable! The two "Pioneers of Punk", Brezel Göring & Anton Garber each intonate one song of a band, they and you used to know for some time now. Brezel Göring, Lilith Stangenberg and Chang Wang hack 'Fahrradsattel' into a two chapter, 8bit wild-west ride directly into lunacy. And Anton Garber? Really! Who else should sing the swansong of the earth than the apocalyptic duo, Danja Schilling & Anton Garber.

    Slot Logic

[engl] Definitely a head-scratcher, this one. A crazed outing from this French band, almost Ministry-esque music that's riff-heavy and dense and very well-produced, fronted by what sounds like either Gibby Haynes or Mike Patton doing his best work at running a game show or a pledge drive. Weird, challenging, confident, and hard to latch on to, like if a rock band was commissioned to write circus music. Sounds like they're having a blast, whatever the hell it is they're doing. - Razorcake

    DISPO / TELESATAN

    s/t

[engl] Dispo, at times, sounds like a more urgent, chaotic Death Wish Kids, certainly no easy feat if you're familiar with that band's sneering, crazed brand of streetpunk. At other times it's lurching, bass-heavy, blown-out art punk. Always high velocity, like everything's teetering on the edge of falling apart. Telesatan, meanwhile, has a number of songs just crossing over the one-minute mark, and yet they still manage to let their songs breathe a bit - often mid-tempo, sparse guitar lines, shouted hoarse vocals. I imagine these are a pair of fun live bands. - Razorcake

    DOC FLIPPERS

    Human Pork

[engl] "The good doctor is finally back to flip us on our backs and give us the old one-two-three-four, following a cassette I only knew about and listened to death and onto rebirth after hanging with the boys in Marseille. These new-age space cowboys take us to the other side of the galaxy with a space shuttle of punk-fuelled psychedelic country… and drop you off into a black hole. The riffs bring the good news of the apocalypse to the new world from the one they left behind. US Maple lightsaber guitars fighting in a Uranium Club? Singer running out of oxygen. References aren’t required anymore, just like when you hired VHS from the local video store. Take the risk, take the plunge, form an opinion yourself… get your money’s worth, tell me to go to hell and stop reading this. If Captain Beefheart kept playing punk music and joined Marbled Eye or something, wearing modern, youthful clothes with an iPhone to hang out with some of the deranged, loveable, lust-for-lifers of Leipzig, maybe it would sound like this, but only after pulling him apart and putting him back together as robocop with a country teasers bumper sticker on his metal arse. Why hire VHS when you can see their amazing video clips, which look like they’ve been directed by Giuseppe Andrews... Doc Flippers are trailer trash cooking bratwurst on top of flaming oil drums... crazy homeless, performance art punk rock."

Viennese dialect, brass band music, this guitar made of glass-cutting sugar and one or two stories from life in the 20s, with the experimental alternating with the non-experimental in the songs. This is the soundtrack in the Walkman of the provincial rebel who is still looking for access to his anger and for all those who mistakenly think they have seen and heard everything. For those who supposedly sort themselves in the middle, the record is definitely a stroke of luck! Half of the records are located in Falco City and are sold there in the tram. So better hurry up!

    FIX

    More Is More

[engl] Fix blew me away with their debut single a couple years ago – not from the music, but from the fact that they just called themselves “Fix”, blatantly swiping the name of one of the greatest American hardcore pioneers for their basement-y sounding weird-punk band. This time around, it appears Fix is an actual live band, and with that came a stylistic shift. Rather than blasting out some direct-to-laptop egg-punk full of neon farts and irritating-on-purpose motifs, they’ve transitioned to a sinewy hardcore-punk outfit, no contrivance needed. On More Is More, they come across like Germany’s answer to Hank Wood & The Hammerheads. The drumming has that same swing (and lots of cowbell!), and the vocalist delivers his shouts in short staccato bursts, much in the Hank Wood manner. Can’t say with certainty that Fix are intentionally aping Hank Wood this time around, but the similarities are certainly glaring, and Hank Wood are one of the most popular underground punk bands, or at least were a year or two ago, so it wouldn’t be a total shock. Thankfully, Fix do well with that same set of sonic characteristics, and the lack of singalong hooks might be more due to my lack of fluent German than their lack of catchiness. Now then, if some other band from Leipzig starts calling themselves The Necros and sounds eerily like Chubby & The Gang, my tolerance will truly be put to the test. - Yellow Green Red

    FIX

    s/t

[engl] That’s right, legendary Detroit hardcore pioneers The Fix are back with a brand new EP. Wait a minute! This is actually some new German weird-punk group who don’t care about recycling a band name. They open with a sparse spoken-word track, like some funky and coherent moment one might find on an early Nurse With Wound album, before getting down to the nitty gritty of lo-fi, presumably-somewhat-synthetic punk rock. It’s such an in-the-red mess that the instruments are nearly unintelligible, except for the snare (is that a real drum kit?), the guitars when they hit a high note and the vocals (although just barely). Reminds me of Factorymen at their most traditionally punk, a live Crazy Spirit tape, the Pillow Talk 7? played on 33 instead of 45, or a particularly rough mix-down of one of the many current Neck Chop Records punk bands hailing from Nova Scotia or Fort Wayne or something. Personally, I enjoy it, particularly cuts like “Basement Life” and “The Goof Life”, whose main riffs overcome the sonic hurdles set forth by Fix’s production standards, although it remains to be seen exactly how many repeat listens Fix will bear. I’m gonna go out on a limb and answer my own question with “less listens than The Fix, more listens than The Fixx”. - Yellow Green Red

    GYM TONIC

    Good Job

[engl] Gym Tonic are an international (1x Canada, 3x France) four-piece (living in Berlin) and talk of the town when it comes to hyped-up synth punk. In some parallel universe, DEVO, Half Japanese and The Residents grew into one and decided to channel their energy into songs about nuclear catastrophes, vitamin injections, car sickness and deadly events. Throw melody lines straight out of the Twillight Zone on top and you have an all-around gem. This is a reissue of the 2019 release on Et Mon Cul C'est Du Tofu?

    Sanitary Situations

[engl] The six new songs on Sanitary Situations continue where Gym Tonic started their way to the top with the 2019 full length Good Job. Like their long-time touring siblings Lassie, they know, that it is a long way (to the top). But the proof, that they're on the right track is right here. Drawing inspiration from their everyday lives or the world around, the new record is their usual merging of post-punk with new wave and 80’s synth music, worshipping (not copying) their masterminds DEVO. It includes themes such as addiction, contagious diseases, sexual harassment and the relations between human mind and technology. At times comical, satirical or tragic their songs are always very lively and floorfillers. Gym Tonic: now more than ever.

    ISOLATIONSGEMEINSCHAFT

    Der Tanz geht weiter!

[engl] Well, there we have the salad, encouraged by positive feedback Isolationsgemeinschaft just carry on instead of simply disbanding after the first tape and the consequent LP to live on as a legend forever and ever. And if you then put on something like this LP, then at least I'm very glad that it wasn't a flash in the pan. We're still digging deep into the early 80's, citing DAF, STAHLNETZ (with better lyrics), DEO and plenty of high profile pioneers of other styles, but finally getting to the heart of loose ends. "Der Tanz geht weiter" is a bit darker than the debut, but it also perfects the sound to such an extent that I can hardly avoid giving it full points, because there's not much room for improvement anymore. Completely successful retro trip that sounds so modern, as if there had never been a tape twist and a missing rewind bolus. Oh, if such a band had actually existed in the eighties, we would have been spared a lot of crap. - Ox

    ISOLATIONSGEMEINSCHAFT

    s/t

[engl] No, Instagram didn’t put out a vinyl album just yet, this I.G. stands for Isolationsgemeinschaft and this is their debut! They play a very German-sounding form of restless cold-wave, which is reasonable considering the duo’s Berlin residence. Synths and drum machines lead the path forward out of a neon-lit ’80s bunker into, well, a very similar-looking ’20s bunker. I’m reminded of Voice Farm, Vono, and that brief intersection where NDW bands revolving around the ZickZack label encountered the Sky Records synth scene that preceded it, a nice pairing of ’70s synth worship and ’80s post-punk paranoia. I.G. are certainly closer to the post-punk paranoia side of things, with many of these songs sounding as though they’re being tailed by a dark figure shrouded in a long trench coat, even if it turns out it’s only one of those Drab Majesty mimes looking to score party drugs. A genre exercise for sure, complete with some subtle Kraftwerk rips here and there (let the electronic group who has never ripped Kraftwerk cast the first stone), but it’s pleasant enough, or should I say unpleasant enough, that Isolationsgemeinschaft receives a synth-wave passing grade if not high honors. - Yellow Green Red

    JAPANISCHE KAMPFHÖRSPIELE

    The Golden Anthropocene

[engl] "And in my German words, we totally screwed up." According to JAKA, this unsuccessful sentence on VW's unsuccessful environmental protection through driving a car concept characterizes the twentieth century, which can probably be identified as the previous peak of the Anthropocene that gives the title. The "Golden" is, how can it be otherwise with JAKA, meant ironically, because the lyrics of the album move in the well-known cosmos of consumer and system criticism and general misanthropy. Sonically, there is an intro with “Verklappt”, which for some reason is a single song, but which seamlessly transitions into the second, “Weiss”, which again features clean vocals, which irritated me a bit when I first heard it. After that it actually goes on musically in a typical JAKA way: sampled quotes, nice ideas such as a key tone that supports the guitar in "The Average Man", breakdowns, nice riffs, guitar tinkering, fast, fast drums, grunted lyrics and all of it well produced . Well, despite the English title, everything at JAKA has stayed the same overall and that's a good thing. It is perhaps interesting that the band packs twenty songs into forty minutes, while some are only thirty seconds long, but others exceed the three-minute mark, "Tag 1 nach dem Menschen" is even over six minutes long and fades out. Anyway, this project is the work of a single person—presumably a Richard—who’s been at it since about 2016. He peddles an oddball mix of noise, minimalist avant-pop, dub, yé-yé, downtempo electronica, and space age bachelor pad music. It’s out there, man! There’s not a bummer track here, but “Phonecalls on My Deathbed” is a hit if I ever heard one; where’s Dick Clark or Rick Dees or CDs….yeah. Hey, this is why I don’t write silly but endearing spazz-wave songs. LASSIE does, they’re really good at it. “Tiger in My Tank” sounds like the fucking RONDELLES! I bet they turn a boring bar into a total fucking blast. “QT Enhancer” is a pogo party in a can. If you like C.C.T.V. or LUMPY or DEVO, I don’t see why you wouldn’t like this. I feel like if this band was from California, they’d be big, or at least “opening for the SPITS” big. So, not that big. But they should be. They’re great. - MRR

    LAXISME

    Premiere Sortie

[engl] Fast, fun, and loaded with energy, LAXISME delivers a five-song cassette that is a little poppy, a little hardcore, and completely infectious. With bluesy howls to round out the choruses, I am already singing along to the French and German that I don’t know, wishing I were pushing through their crowd. Phantom seems to have their ear pressed firmly to the Berlin [Leipzig] underground, and I hope they keep listening. More, please! - MRR

    MEAT SHIRT

    Army Of Dolphins

[engl] Suicidal Tendencies covering Dead Kennedys, both in their best phases. It won't take long before you get affected by the contagious enthusiasm provoked by MEAT SHIRT. Some electrifying waves are coming and no one can take control of the untamable energy. MEAT SHIRT tumbles without warning and throws everything on the ground. Is it punk ? hardcore ? garage ? Who cares, this is just the right dose of spontaneity you need. MEAT SHIRT confesses being influenced by the Californian and Texan 80's hardcore scenes as well as the psyche movement but you better judge from yourself. MEAT SHIRT comes from St Brieuc, Brittany.

    NOVOTNY TV

    NOWAVES

Good For Health Bad For Education

[engl] This is darkness in the right way. What I mean to say is that NOWAVES sound like they exist in a shroud and/or shrouded by smoke—sounds composed in the physical and metaphorical recesses, presentation that struggles to harness a primitive determination. NOWAVES will certainly appeal to goth revivalists with cuts like “Empty Sorrows” that focus on the synth and that ’80s dancefloor swing, but it’s all in the context of a record that mostly lands somewhere between EA80/GRAUZONE and WIPERS. Although the record is not overly layered, I notice something new every time I listen (WARREN ZEVON meets the CURE vibe on the title track, for example), which only encourages me to listen more. - MRR
