    GOOD THROB

    s/t

[engl] Hear the notorious London punk band's latest obscenity. Following their first two singles and 2015 LP, this record offers four rude and crude tunes. Emerging from the musical manifestation of a bad acid trip, songs kick in with militaristic drumming, underpinning mean riffs and heart-pumping bass, overlaid with the vulgar vocal thunderings of an irritable goblin woman. Distinct themes include: a loving ode to unsuccessful murderer and feminist outlier of the 1970s Valerie Solanas; a poisonous take-down of slick dicks everywhere; a disgusting and treasonous anti-monarchic polemic; and an erotic re-imagining of the England's humdrum motorway service stations. Now doomed to (temporary, we hope) geographical separation, this record will be the last squirt of noises from these sourpuss primitives for the known future.

    HEKATE

    Days of Wrath

[engl] It’s not surprising that Hekát? chose their name after the ancient Greek goddess Hekate, the deity of the underworld, witchcraft, nighttime and crossroads. Hekát? are four women coming from different paths, all of which converged in the Spring of 2018, and met at the great crossroad of Athens’ eternal night. Their music is multi-referential, an explosive mix of their magic potions. The heavy, melodic bass establishes the base of their post-punk sound. The drums derail it where necessary. The synths, more electric than electronic, can be heard distinctly, at times leaning towards a smarter New Wave but also giving a wink at garage rock. The vocals sound like an enraged, rhythmic recital tightroping along the melody. As a result, their eight tracks move along a scale, starting with melancholic, urban hymns and ending in anxious, frenzied chases, all tied together with a ceremonial atmosphere. The record title, Days of Wrath, is a translation of the Medieval hymn “Dies Irae,” which warns of God’s wrath, which will come down on the people during the Second Coming. Through their lyrics, Hekát? turn their wrath towards God, the people who created Him and the constricting world those people sustain. It starts out like a cry for help and climaxes into a war cry. Hekát?’s war cry is the voice of a generation of emancipated women in motion. With few similar examples across the Greek scene, it comes as the result of their own liberation and of the many who came before them, paving the way. As political beings, Hekát? cannot but reflect their own gender identity in their music. An identity that—whether on stage or on record, or out there in the high-speed jungle of Greek society—expresses emotions from discomfort to aggression, as it is by definition obstructed by outdated and invisible privileges. For those who don’t wish to understand, they explain it, cut and dry, with their track-manifesto “Soapbox,” reminding them: “You think you see me? Well, you see shit!” However, do not be disheartened. Days of Wrath is not some wooden, incomprehensible declaration of ideas. It is a deeply poetic, atmospheric record, doused in cloudy melodies that know when to hit the gas to carry the listener to the other side

    HERESY

    Never Healed

[engl] Rising from the ashes of Plasmid, like the dove still flying ardent for peace, came HERESY. A bombastic Disorder of hyper speed thrash from the emerging UKH/C scene, 3 sprightly youths blending the fresh sounds of ‘metal up your ass’ riffs and the speed of USH/C classics through regimented bullet-beats of military precision and a monotonal Discharge of vocal Armageddon. For the first time since it’s 1986 release this cult flexi disc sees the light of day once more as a hard vinyl 7?45rpm(is that even possible?)-13 minutes of rapid chaos at that-in its originally intended full colour jacket, complete with a large format full colour poster of unseen photo’s, lost fliers and clippings making this the most comprehensive documentation of this era of Heresy to date.

    HOLOGRAM

Build Yourself Up So Many Times Only To Be Brought Down Again And Again

[engl] "From the brazen debris of Washington DC’s Closet Christ comes Hologram darting at you with their debut EP of disarray that will leave you in a state of confusion. Questioning if what you had heard was reality. From mid tempo to bull paced charged in your face, this will leave you topsy turvy. If forced to compared it to reality, sloppy yet tight Italian hardcore created by an absolute maniac who lacks the ability to process pitch." DJ Kombat. Build Yourself up so Many Times Only to be Brought Down Again and Again was recoded by Emil Bognar Nasdor and comes in a pocket sleeve and insert designed by the band’s frontman and songwriter Brendan Reichhardt.

    HOME FRONT

    Think Of The Lie

[engl] Created on the western edges of the infinite plains and prairies of coldest Canada, Edmonton, Alberta's HOME FRONT dance freely and madly along the edges of time and create their own moment amongst the revered and long frozen reserves of THE CURE, SUICIDE, ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN, "Second Empire Justice" era BLITZ, and NEW ORDER. A record bubbling over with analog synth, guitar loops, slammed 808 drums, and anthemic vocal pushes tugging at the great moment in-between the “death” of punk and the “birth” of new wave, pulling fresh sounds into their punk roots and shoving a studded leather jacket around a silk robe. El Aire Libre Fuera de los Dientes del Monstruo Tirano y Canibal

[engl] After a demo and three seven inches ILEGAL finally unleash their debut full length. 12 songs clocking in at just about 30 minutes. Heavily influenced by early Italian and Spanish hardcore bands like WRETCHED or ANTI-DOGMATIKSS their sound brings to mind a time in hardcore where you could still understand what the band was singing about while sounding ferocious. Lyrics dealing with their status as illegal immigrants in Canada as well as the horrors of modern society, all sung in Spanish. Recorded analog in Quebec Canada with vocals added digitally later in Germany. Mastered by Joel Hatsat in Florida and housed in a beautiful wraparound sleeve designed by Eugene from CRAZY SPIRIT.

    INSERVIBLES

    Una Vida de Tristeza

[engl] Inservibles is probably the coolest, most relevant Mexican band of the past 10-20 years. Hyper negative/realistic attitude with a well-informed and loose sound that brings to mind United Mutation, or Cheetah Chrome Motherfuckers, or garage, or Terveet Kadet with longer songs, recorded via 4-track with access to a delay pedal. Everybody always says "deranged", "weird", "disturbed", "menacing", yeah probably, it always helps to have something to be pissed about. But one should also note their keen abilities as songwriters, to write powerful and memorable hardcore songs that never stray inappropriately into rock or metal or speed. Just straight-forward mastery of all the things we love about 'hardcore punk'.

    INSTITUTE

    Ragdoll Dance

[engl] Ragdoll Dance is the 4th album by New York-via Texas punks Institute. Most underground punk bands don’t make four albums, but it makes sense for Institute. Even on their earliest releases, Institute’s sound teemed with possibility, drawing from a long history of anarcho-punk, post-punk, and hardcore, and fusing those aesthetics with great, classic-sounding songwriting. Ragdoll Dance finds Institute back with their original lineup (including Albert from Nosferatu and Altar of Eden on drums) and returning to a DIY approach to recording, working both at home (using the same setup as singer Moses Brown’s solo project, Peace de Résistance) and with Joe and Owen of D4MT Labs, whose gritty yet vital recordings have documented some of DIY punk’s best contemporary bands. Institute also chose to work within the international hardcore community to release the record; Brown plays drums in Secretors alongside Joe from Roach Leg Records, whose label is known for releasing some of the noisiest, most fringe recordings in the punk sub-underground (across the pond they’ve gone with the iconic La Vida Es Un Mus). While Ragdoll Dance is culturally embedded in the world of DIY hardcore punk, musically it tends to move back toward the more eclectic sound of Salt and Catharsis. The album’s title is a nod to Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Brown also cites arty post-punks Magazine as an influence on the record, which shows on tracks like “City” and “Where’s It Go,” energetic, left-of-center pop songs that challenge but also gratify. If you’re looking for the savage young Institute, though, “Uncle Sam’s Hate” and “Plateau of Self” crackle with raw rock and roll energy that few groups can summon, particularly groups with Institute’s inimitable style, musical chops, and lyrical weight. While so many punk bands peak early, Institute has continued to refine these qualities, and Ragdoll Dance’s assured tone makes it as vital as anything they’ve recorded so far.

    Era Electrónica

[engl] Following up their 2020 EP Barcelona IRREAL delivers eight troglodyte anthems of radikal hardcore punk. Borrowing heavily from the Hear Nothing era DISCHARGE and echoing equally Suomi classics DESTRUKTIONS/ MELLAKKA and AOQ demo era CRO-MAGS, IRREAL creates a maelstrom of hypnotic feedback. Era Electrónica Catalan and Spanish anarchist lyrics bind the bands primitive sonic assault, delivering a modern hardcore punk record without an ounce of modern attitude. IRREAL

    Fi Del Mon

[engl] IRREAL from Barcelona surprised us last year with a 6 track Demo tape of crude Hardcore which saw the band playing loads both local and internationally. The line up was made up of Barcelona punk scene stalwarts (NUEVA FUERZA, DESTINO FINAL, BARCELONA, ANARQUIA VERTICAL, UNA BÈSTIA INCONTROLABLE) which were not new to writing razor sharp riffs and impossibly catchy yet aggressive beats so their song writing and live performances lived up to the expectations. 2019 saw the band facing guitar player changes and with a new line up they entered studio with Dani Frutos to record the 9 songs on Fi Del Mon. 9 tracks or urgent hardcore punk continuing the tradition of modern Barcelona Hardcore while keeping and eye in Finish hardcore and which are not afraid to turn the speed down to a pace that could bring to mind mid paced DISCHARGE or CRO-MAGS. The riffs are thick and crunchy, full of feedback and distortion, backed by a solid rhythm section and a assertive Catalan voice which makes sure to enunciate every syllable breathing some fresh air to an otherwise stale scene.

It’s relentless and is an absolute fireball of speed and energy. Think a mix of Gorilla Angreb, Screamers, Spits, Rip Off Records and those classic Killed by Death 7”s that now are worth thousands. KHIIS

    Bezoar

[engl] Oakland's KHIIS, on this, their first full-length record, unleash a torrent of killer riffs, building songs of purpose and power, absent of the chaos and noise that engulfs many modern hardcore records. While such noise obviously has its place in the canon of punk and its raw machinations, KHIIS know they don't need the obscurant balm of feedback, they stand clear and robust, simply put: they've just got the fuckin riffs. Similarly the vocals are declamatory and forthright, not wild ghosts of delay and reverb, determined attacks, stark in their fury. KHIIS charge mightily through nine striking tracks of thick, full-blooded hardcore punk, taking no prisoners (Joe Briggs)

Picking up where they left off with their highly acclaimed 2019 album Ihmisen kasvot, this Helsinki 4-piece bring you another relentless piece of wax full of raw and catchy hardcore punk. Much like Kohti Tuhoa’s previous recordings, Elä totuudesta (Live the truth) EP has a strong classic-Finnish-hardcore feel to it, but it also shows the band breaking with tradition and bringing in more experimental elements in the closing track “Vesi virtaa”. Thematically the EP revolves around personal struggles and gender equality with the powerful vocal work underlining every word, even spotlighting problems within the punk scene.

[engl] KOHTI TUHOA’s self titled debut EP is finally available on vinyl again! The earlier 7” pressings sold out long ago and are getting harder to find, so it's time for this record to get the well-deserved LVEUM treatment. Unsatisfied with the original release, the band decided to remaster the record from the original analog tapes and rework the layout for best possible results. The LVEUM pressing will be cut on a 45rpm 12" and includes the complete 7-track session with the bonus track “Velkaa maksat kuitenkin”, which was left out of the original pressing since the session was too long for a 7”. This is KOHTI TUHOA in their early days: raw, noisy, fast and slightly more metallic, like a mix of Behind the Realms of Madness -era SACRILEGE, FRAMTID and classic Finnish hardcore.

    KOHTI TUHOA

    Väkivaltaa

[engl] The hardworking Helsinki 4-piece are back with a new EP, which shows the band experimenting with different sounds on each side of the record. On side A the band draws inspiration from early Spiderleg Records EPs and Killing Joke, with raw, catchy guitar parts and vocals nicely layered on top of a heavy, driving beat. Side B offers 3 tracks of catchy yet relentless hardcore punk where intense screaming, pogo beats and broken-sounding guitars create a backdrop for a great mix of Finnish hardcore, Disorder and modern bands like Colombia's Muro. The lyrics illustrate a violent world plunging into chaos at an alarming rate, which seems to be the case in all parts of the planet in 2021.

    KOMA

    Internment Failure

[engl] Leeds/London band KOMA deliver their debut LP "Internment Failure": 12 tracks of brutal, unrelenting, constantly contorting and mutating hardcore - perfectly encapsulating the desperation of living in the final generations of a failed state, watching the life of the planet ebb away. Frantically written and recorded across 2 cities within the band's first 12 months of existence, KOMA casts a wide net of global influences but refuses to be indebted to any one singular band or scene. At times recalling the classic Finnish & Swedish hardcore of MELLAKKA and CRUDE SS mixed with the raw distorted brute power of VO?O PROTESTA and BASTARD; echoes of the unhinged mayhem of ATAQUE FRONTAL and CHAIN REACTION subside to moments of gothic tension like TOŽIBABE and PYHÄKOULU. KOMA makes a bold and ambitious statement of intent, a wholly-realised vision and fully-formed sound of pummeling riffs and powerful vocals that will remind of SACRILEGE's debut.

The new line up may have taken the guitar fuzziness a notch down in favour of a crunchier guitar tone but amped up the songwriting to the next level with a overdose of riffs, attacking each note with the same ferocious venom they have us accustomed to. These two tracks display both sides of KRIEGSHÖG perfectly, a mid tempo bass driven 4 minute banger backed up by a classic destructive sonic jam with the gnarliest punk vocals out there. LAME

    Dejad Que Vengan One Sided

[engl] “A decade after the international boom of the Iberian Hardcore scene and its subsequent decline, some members of the bands ORDEN MUNDIAL and BARCELONA, scattered around Europe, got together to form LAME, with MORREADORAS’ bassist on vocal duties. These 7 songs were written in Mallorca during 4 days and recorded in pieces between Mallorca and Berlin shortly after. An instantaneous and fleeting project, quick and concise, with no time for regrets. A journey through the generalised madness that affects us from far and near; a mixture of reflections and blind head-butts against the padded walls of understanding. The loss of control, the loss of time, the loss of oneself and the loss of dear departed all meet at once. Resignation is death indeed. What does it sound like? Unabashed hardcore with a broad spectrum of current and classic influences. Serrated guitar riffs, mechanical deep bass lines and hypnotic drumming backing an extremely sharp and vile vocal delivery. It can remind you at times of CHAIN REACTION and GRB, of RUDIMENTARY PENI and NOG WATT. All passed through a Mediterranean filter”.
