    ALEX CAMERON

    Live In San Francisco

[engl] Here we have the final entry into our Live In San Francisco series: an intimate evening with Alex and his indispensable sax man, Roy Molloy (beard in briefcase) performing at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco, a very classy and lovingly maintained venue originally built in 1907 on Market Street, just a pube or two into the Castro District. I was first introduced to Alex Cameron by Adam Beris, a real swell fellow who’s been drawing Castle Faces for us for years. He asked if I had heard of this “Suicide meets sad Springsteen” act and showed me the mysterious Geocities-style website (complete with shady porn ads). I was immediately hooked on the skeletal throb, the stark portraits of hard luck losers, the ego-maniacal squares, and the swagger on this prosthetically wrinkled Australian song & dance man. On a paid website, as he reminds us. Both sharp witted and steeped in thespian courage, this is exactly what the world needed in this hungry, hungry time we live in. We got in touch, things led to other things, and when Alex was opening for Oh Sees at the Chapel in San Francisco we hatched a plan to make a live record, over white wine spritzers (as all the best deals are inked). Al and Roy are the real deal, folks…and this wasn’t to be just any old show. I was determined to do something a little special, and I got the idea from working on John’s book of poster art (Exploded Globes) to bill it as a semi-formal, encourage people to “get dressed up and messed up” as John puts it, and do it in a classy sort of hall, make it muy romantico. We got flowers from the Mission De Flores (who have sadly joined the ghost ranks of SF small businesses past), one of which made it to the cover, the champagne and fine wines flowed, and I like to think we helped San Francisco get a little luckier that night. There’s flower petals all over the mix here; Roy’s sax slinks sultrily, Al is in fine form, adding the occasional barb on the stem, sounding well oiled and comfortably bantering between tunes, and Justin Nijssen hangs back and window-dresses the whole thing with some well placed guitar and a few backups. These are professionals, need I remind you, hard workin’ road dogs with deep thoughts that inspire deep respect, and they put some dancing sweat on all the hits from Jumping The Shark as well as “Candy May” from Forced Witness, which at the time wasn’t yet out. We couldn’t be prouder of our final “Live In SF" disc, and it’s out on Castle Face Records in partnership with Secretly Canadian April 19th. - Matt Jones

    ANNOUNCING BRONZE

    Absolute Compliance

[engl] We here at Castle Face dig a good trance. Hypnosis, mesmerization, and brain trickery are some of our favorite results of deep listening and it is a suggestive, ritualistic and dreamlike vibe that Bronze ooze like pheromones all over their excellent new record. Absolute Compliance is a truly hypnogogic group of tunes from Bronze on their best and weirdest behavior and it hits all my favorite things about them immediately and repeatedly: Insistently strange synth voicings emanating from Miles Friction's mad scientists lab worth of equipment controlled by a homemade-looking oversized knob; Brian Hock’s throbbing, woolly, hall of mirror grooves; and above it all Rob Spector’s thousand yard croon the vaguely familiar touchstone amongst the Lynchian, mutated surroundings…these are songs of dreams and nightmares, hidden rituals observed, futuristic coliseum entertainments displaced in time, sci fi jams of an uncertain future. Bronze are one-of-a kind great and if you’re unfamiliar you should go find their other records (including their great live record for us) and get caught up. They are real-deal weirdo kings of San Francisco and their spell is not easily dissipated once cast.

    APPRENTICE DESTROYER

    Glass Ceiling Universe

[engl] Recorded completely in secret, one track at a time at Guitar Center, Apprentice Destroyer’s debut Glass Ceiling Universe transcends its immediately intriguing concept to highlight a hyperactive and omnivorous talent within. These are wide ranging, kaleidoscopic instrumental compositions, veering from disorientingly complex to achingly and delicately beautiful, but always with a metallic, misanthropic edge, as if these are computers playing to each other across the Guitar Center sales floor, laughing at the puny humans attempting to create harmonics in air as they can do so perfectly in the vacuum of binary. It’s lifestyle music for all you cyborg assassins out there. Colored vinyl edition is Titanium White and comes in a special limited edition metallic jacket.

[engl] Recorded at Zebulon in Los Angeles as a warm up show for a show I had booked in Holland. What was meant to be a jumping point for the ‘first show’ ended up being a real burning set. A slightly more stripped down version on the 10 piece band (for sake of ease) keeps it nice and concise. Nerves sometimes bring out these little lost jewels of which this recording is full of…gotta love improvisation for fleeting moments. Recorded super hot by none other than our sound person Liza Boldyreva. Selections of songs from Bent Arcana & Moon Drenched Cockpit stoned space jazz here you come. Mixed by John Dwyer and mastered by JJ Golden. This hunky double disk sports a zoetropic screen-print ed animation of the Death’s Head moth circling on its D side that works with a strobe light off yer phone….fucking cool fucking hot dig in and be well.

    BLIND SHAKE

    Live In San Francisco

[engl] Captured to tape the same nights as the OBN IIIs live record, way back in 2013, we caught the Blind Shake tour-greased and fully torqued over three nights at The Chapel in San Francisco. If you're unfamiliar: the sheer bodily reaction to seeing these guys is a unique pleasure, they are consistently one of the most fun bands to watch that’s doin’ it to it these days. They’re such a direct channel to your inner teenager it's more often than not you end up in the pit, awash in baritone guitar and that "lets wig out" beat. Whether you’re a noob or a vet, all the bludgeoning favorites are here, one song combing into the next with tasty bites of guitar, and man, they swing that hammer all over this thing. A sterling testament to their claim as the heaviest nice guys around. Their chrome domes shined up real nice for the excellent night-of photographs from our main man Brian Pritchard, and as usual we've got John Dwyer, Chris Woodhouse, Eric Bauer, and Bob Marshall manning the decks, keepin’ it crisped for your hi-fis at home. All vinyl includes download cards, colored vinyl limited to two per customer and ships outside the jacket in a polybag.

BRIGID DAWSON & THE MOTHERS NETWORK

    Ballet of Apes

[engl] Tip-top of our osmosis list is the first quiver of tunes from Brigid Dawson and her newly minted Mothers Network: wise warnings dyed in dark hues, knotted and hard-won torch songs from the edge of a turbulent sea, bittersweet balladry spun in defense against evils familiar and unknown. Lovely though it may seem from a distance, the striation of loss quicksilvered throughout provides weighty balance to her contralto lilt. Those familiar with her harmonic counterpoint from her time in Thee Oh Sees or in OCS know she can belt as well as lullaby but there’s a fresh and smolderingly heavy swing in her step on display here that we mightily dig. “Ballet of Apes” tapestries together sessions that read like a who’s who from outside our own castle walls - in Australia with Mikey Young (Total Control/Eddy Current Suppression Ring), in San Francisco with Mike Donovan (ex Sic Alps), Shayde Sartin (ex Fresh & Onlys/lifetime ringer) and Mike Shoun (ex Oh Sees/Peacers), and in Brooklyn with instrumental heavy-weights Sunwatchers - and the results are spellbinding. At the focal point of this maelstrom, our lady, as if illumed by candlelight, intones, pleads, consoles - white magic perhaps but it carries with it the anodized tang of blood.

    Gift

[engl] We've very honored to present Burnt Ones' third record "Gift", which may be a bit of a surprise to fans of the band on first listen - it's far more psychedelic than their previous work, a potent blend of wide-eyed strummers on shifting sands, punctuated by blinking oscillators, left turns into wispy sound collage and tape manipulations, drug-rug wrapped lushness and telephone whispers from a supremely stoned sounding Mark Tester, our guide through this cultish and at times vaguely sinister headphone-scape. It's a woozy and a woolly one and features original artwork by William Keihn.

    Of A Nature or Degree

[engl] "When I was first told about Duds, it came with the considered opinion that the guys were far from what you’d call ‘careerists'. 'They don’t take themselves too seriously' was another comment. I could have taken this as a warning that they weren’t in it for the right reasons - but that couldn’t be further from the truth. From my perspective Duds simply won’t bend over backwards to "get on". They do what they do and you can take it or leave it. I took it - with both hands…with a vice-like grip. They have the invention and urgency of Edinburgh legends The Fire Engines. The Post-Punk ethic. Short songs, short sets = short album. They’re one of the most thrilling bands I’ve seen in years - and the fact that they’re releasing this brilliant piece of work on the Castle Face label adds the last piece of a perfect ‘outsider' jigsaw puzzle. Duds sitting alongside Oh Sees, Ty Segall, White Fence, Useless Eaters et al. THERE IS A GOD!” - Marc Riley, June 2017

Urgent falsetto morbidities detail Damaged Bug’s most rhythmically adventurous offering yet, syncopating lush landscapes with moon-shot death rays. Witness in horror the tractor beam pull of Slay The Priest - a breathless sprint through unfamiliar enemy territory - erratic laser beam synths dredge the lake, hard panned double drums resurrect dead heartbeats - load thy crossbow, friend, this night is long and we appear beset on all sides. The Bug is back and more hideous than ever - join us in a gawp at its iridescent shell, its alien mandibles…and the guts streaming from the wound. 3 sides on 2 LPs in a gatefold jacket, with an etched 4th side.

    DAMAGED BUG

    Cold Hot Plumbs

[engl] John Dwyer has a surprise for us…while we’ve all been eagerly anticipating the next Oh Sees record, he’s been tirelessly working in his synth laboratory as Damaged Bug and has hand-crafted a followup to 2014’s neon-noir Hubba Bubba that shakes up the snow globe considerably. If Hubba Bubba was a brush with a robotic exoskeleton on deep-space patrol, Cold Hot Plumbs is a visit to the alien world that sent it into the cosmos - lush, textural, psychedelic at times, the songs breathe with a otherworldly sadness and heart, with barbed and sophisticated arrangements flowering in every direction. The vintage-perfect sound palette would be but window dressing if not for the songs themselves, which sound fresh, vital, and above all catchier than the flu. Cold Hot Plumbs is a strange, beautiful, and oddly infectious addition to Mr. Dwyer’s oeuvre, and not one to be missed.

    DEEP THROATS

    Good Bad Pretty

[engl] "Trying to look up “Deep Throats” on the internet to find out what year I first saw them just proved interesting...Clarion Alley 1999(?) I was a kid, I took mushrooms to help me 'ease into things.’ It was a perfect SF night. Warm and dimly lit. Shit and piss smelling Clarion Alley. A band took the eye-level built-that-afternoon stage. I had peeked up gender-bent punk’s chicken-leather skirt and into eternity. How old were they? Who were they? How were they so fascinating? They were blowing my young mind. I remember a show where, for some reason I can’t recall, but probably the cops had shut a party down, they got moved to a friends backyard down on 3rd street. They played in front of a halogen work light on cement and somebody threw a bucket of yellow latex paint into the sky. The show was incredible and unstoppable (until the bikers next door called the cops and broke the party up).I’m not sure how I made it home but the next morning I woke up to strangers sleeping on my living room floor and yellow paint footsteps covering my joint. I spent the next day gagging on my hands and knees scrubbing paint off the hardwood floor (even the shitty flats in SF have nice floors). Drugs, violence. General snottiness. Elastic paranoid guitar. SRO drum kit. Coke-bottle specs sharp bass sounds. An abstract guitar dance that still I can’t rip off without feeling guilty. Smirking medicated bass player whose heavy glasses slid down his sweating beak. Hot as hell and unapproachable drum master Sugar, whose boyfriend at the time I remember as like an extra from Warriors except he rode a BMX and was like 40...bad ass. Then there is Tracy. Sneer lip stick smear. Ripped stocking high heel in my eye. Tough as nails. Off the rails. A guitar as skinny as a knife. Bent on pushing an ideal into your face hole. I look back on these dark and aggressive times with much fondness. And now, here, we present to you the long lost final deep throats recordings, Good Bad Pretty, on frosted sugar injected vinyl. Dig in, kids." -John Dwyer, Thee Oh Sees

    DYLAN SHEARER

    Garagearray

[engl] Cut from the cloth of early Soft Machine and Kevin Ayers-isms, “garagearray” is a lofty, loopy flight in a candy floss-clouded sky, with an ever-present a darkness below the surface. It's wonderfully off the cuff, in moments reminiscent of a Syd Barrett session where the band must've just closed their eyes and felt it out in the dark. Coming together in all the right moments, sometimes absolute in its nick-of-timeness. Dylan Shearer is joined on this LP by Petey Dammit on bass (Thee Oh Sees) and Noel von Harmonson on drums (Comets On Fire). Produced by Eric Bauer (Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin...etc) this session maintains a lighter than life vibration, like a breeze weaving through a tree far overhead. The production smacks with that lost in time quality of a BBC session piloted by a natural on the knobs genius. Produced as a split release with our buds at Empty Cellar Records - we did two colored vinyl editions for this, ours is the LAVA FIELD edition - featuring silkscreened jackets of Neon Orange/Red overprinted with Granite Grey, to compliment the Color-in-color Orange In Silver vinyl. Theirs is the ICE CAVE edition, with jackets silkscreened a shimmering Silver then overprinted with an Ice-Turquoise to match the Ice Blue vinyl with White Haze. Both editions are limited to 250 and we have only a small batch of the ICE CAVE edition here, you can find more at

    EX-CULT

    Cigarette Machine

[engl] On the tail of their excellent breakout 2nd LP "Midnight Passenger" on Goner Records, we have a brand new batch of bruisers from Ex-Cult, the Memphis-based punk cyclone that no doubt has laid waste to a town near you recently. Chris Shaw lends a sneering, spitting toughness to the proceedings while the band flays riffs in loose, hairy mosh inducing menace behind him, touching on post-punk, psych sprawl, and early 80s hardcore while remaining beholden to none. They have the power to convert even the most jaded and bored concertgoer into a sweaty mess in the pit, I’ve seen it first hand… punks, scene rats, skaters, skinheads, hardcore kids, druggies - so many disparate groups dig this band it’s like an MRR cartoon waiting to happen. This too-short collection of adrenal-enhancers are road warriors already - the title track’s chants of “trou-ble-finds-me” immediately transports me back to their packed and stanky show at The Smell every time I put the record on - the only problem with this sterling batch of sluggers is that it’s over too quick.

    Biased Advice

[engl] "A weird trip of a band…the second this was playing I was immediately hooked. I initially dove in because their name was attached to Mikey Young for mastering (I have a rule with Mikey…if he had his hands on it, it’s probably worth a listen) This band exceeds in all my trials. Esoteric nature, but oddly poppy and ready to prick up any ears out there. Deconstructed, but full of hooks. If I were a lazy man, and I am, I would say its for fans of PiL, but they transcend that pigeon-hole. Wonderful production lends its self to this unique LP. It seems as if the room expands and contracts throughout songs. Pulling away, then blocking your field of vision entirely. Wasteland Funk. Dub from the depths. Punk from the pit. Even the instrumentation is worth mentioning: Saxophone, Drums (and cut up drums), Guitar, Synthesizer, Vocals (poetry) and general fuckery all combine to make this a very interesting and worthwhile escape from the average. And thank the Gods for that right now. Inspired and desired by the active mind. A job well done by EXEK, and there’s new stuff brewing too... For fans of BEAK>, Phantom Band, PIL & general Jah Wobbleness, Magazine, Short wave radio, ESG and underground Kraut” - John Dwyer

    EXIT GROUP

    Adverse Habitat

[engl] From the dank warehouse recesses that brought us Useless Eaters and Dry Erase, may we introduce Exit Group - sharply futuristic post-punk with a pissed-off lean, antisocial lyrics spit over an abnormally locked-in guitar bass drums triangle, wound up tighter than a Swiss watch. Post-everything sample tweakery and chrome-dipped guitar tonality lend a darkly robotic sheen, abraded riffs pop up everywhere but where you think they should be, clanging and clanking inhumanly around elaborate Rube Goldberg patterns, tessellating under flickering municipal neon. Bone-dry furious, turning on a dime just to slap the drink out of your hand. “A thrilling disaster I can’t wait to witness first hand” - Marc Riley “A great record from start to finish! Smart and perfectly abrasive” -Henry Rollins

    FLAT WORMS

    Flat Worms

[engl] Flat Worms really belt-sanded us with their 7” on Volar, and we are proud as new papas to present their debut LP. They continue their ride on a buzzsaw wave of feedback-tipped riffs into the middle distance, smog choked sunset receding in the rearview, a thousand yard dead-pan surgically pinned to a high octane set of boredom energized punk pistons. Flat Worms - an ears-a-ringing missive from the end of the cul-de-sac, the mirage of direction wavering above a mid-sized American suburb at dusk, constellations bleached black by the sprawl. A little Wipers, a little Wire, and a lot of late-capitalist era anxious energy - Flat Worms scratch the itch quite nicely, we think. Colored vinyl limited to 2 per customer. "Undreams" comes seven years after the debut album "Cradle of Snake". These seven years have done the band more than good. The dark sound of their songs has nothing in common with the adolescent melancholy of some contemporaries. It is not egocentric or even narcissistic, but rather, and forgive me for using this word because it is equally uncommon in this context, caring. He wraps you gently like your favourite blanket on a grey autumn day, gives you soft, flickering light on a nightly path, he comforts quietly, knowing full well that danger is not banished by a hum, he says the world is not a good place, but we have it in our hands, as long as we stick together, to change that. It may sound presumptuous, but "Undreams" showcases all the skills Mia, Tess and Frankie have acquired over the years in their bands and solo projects. It is an album marked by life experience, dark, but also powerful, thunderous, energetic. "Undreams" is an album of three women facing life in all its facets. It was recorded, like the previous one, by Stefan Brändström at The Dustward Studio in Stockholm. Snake wanted to get as close as possible to the atmosphere of the rehearsal room and make the album a reflection of what the band heard and felt during rehearsals. "With the power of 'Me Too' in our hearts, we've been working through the album process since the wave in 2017. We think it's a darker album, but also with a glimmer of hope. We've found that together we can be strong, share difficult experiences and make our voices heard. We address teenage angst, the fear of getting older, love, grief and the struggle to put the shame and guilt where it belongs."
