    EXCITEMENTS, THE

    Breaking The Rule

[engl] Do not complain. The legion of Excitements fans DOES exist in places near and far in this world-gone-insane so if you are ready to be recruited you're in luck. Miraculously, these workaholics of rhythm, who conquered and claimed more than fifteen countries just for the sheer thrill of it during their last tour, found a break and the action of their troubled agenda. It seemed only logical to throw their road sharpened revue into the studio to commit to wax their finest album to date entitled "Breaking The Rule". After more than two years on the road and 200 sweat soaked performances since the release of their second LP "Sometimes Too Much Is Not Enough", this third LP certifies that the big combo from Barcelona can do whatever they please: either caress you or kick you in the stomach-or both. The steamroller rhythm section is one powerful structure pounding under searing guitars, roaring horns and all reigned over by the voice of Koko that claws at their hypnotic gyrations with wild abandon. This new Excitements bag, as expected, is THE satisfier with high voltage rhythm and soul floorshakers and lease breakers-"Everything is Better Since You're Gone","Fire", "Hold On Together"-ripping spear-hurling R & B - "Chicken Picking" "I'd Rather Feel The Pain", "Did I Let You Down", heartbreaking ballads and mid-tempos - "Breaking The Rule", and "Take It Back" and and a pair of rhythmical postcards- a tribute to what once were the noisy streets of New Orleans ("Mojo Train") and restless nights in a Havana boarding house ("Four Loves"). And do not, do not fear, inside this explosive cocktail of sonic chaos, a strange sweet harmony prevails through all and each of the grooves of the record. And as always, all wrapped up, signed, sealed and delivered with the elegantly filthy production of Mike Mariconda.

[engl] We understand that you love elegant, sophisticated music with a feeling, as much as raw, gutsy, hard-hitting music. And Penniman Records takes great pride in introducing you to The Excitements, because their music fits into both categories, and for plenty other reasons as well: because they are an ALL NATURAL free-of-additives-and-preservatives R&B / Soul band. A band with both feet solidly planted on Memphis and Detroit, and with a heartbeat which is pure Chicago. To put it simply, The Excitements are what the doctor ordered: six dynamite musicians intent on bringing out the very best from Koko Jean Davis’ extraordinary voice, a voice which will either break your heart or astonish your ears, whatever Koko fancies the most. The Excitements’ career is truly awesome. Their first gig took place in July 2010, and a month after that the band embarked on the first of their three recording sessions, their first Spanish tour and a series of concerts all across Europe. Very few groups can boast of enjoying such a critical success, selling so many 45s and capturing such a loyal following in so short a time. Their splendid first album, “The Excitements” –available on vinyl and CD—has been produced by the great Mike Mariconda –the only living man with a direct connection between his ears and his crotch. Hearing is believing, and Koko and her partners are bound to mesmerize with numbers such as Nathaniel Mayer’s “From Now On”, Barbara Stephens’s “Wait a Minute” and Little Richard’s “Never Let You Go”, a track which will go straight to your heart. You may call them old-fashioned. A classic sound, if you wish. One thing is clear: the good stuff is here to stay. Stop reading, listen to The Excitements and hear for yourself.

    Sometimes Too Much Ain't Enough

[engl] The Excitements are a hardworking band, almost hyperactive, so when you are in a state of perpetual motion, things happen fast and time flies. Within six months of their first show in March 2010, the group was touring all over Europe, and recorded their first long play. The album was a totally unexpected success which led the band across the continent for a year and a half. It’s sad to say, but "Sometimes Too Much Ain’t Enough", the second LP, surpasses its predecessor in all respects, and gives the impression that until now the band was just...warming up. The essence of their sound has not changed substantially over the debut: early Soul, R & B, and a hint of 50's gospel, but now fully developed, sharpened and fine tuned, thanks to two years of intense rehearsing and countless shows. It would be difficult to pick out a standout song from this album, because it contains twelve potential singles, so we won't. Just listen to it, and see that everything is here- great originals and covers arranged and performed with a nod to all that you love, and a repertoire that offers everything from sophisticated R & B, soul, gospel and latin, to Stax-style instrumentals and tear jerking, hypnotic ballads. Masterfully produced by Mike Mariconda, the band moves freely from a small combo to an orchestra with a sense of dynamics that few bands have today. The explosive voice of Koko Jean Davis demands that you jump, dance, and weep all at the same time, confirming that, indeed, there are times when too much simply ain't enough.

    GOLD, THE

    s/t

[engl] The First Mystery: “The Gold” Where does this name come from? Maybe it's because these guys are like very valuable treasure, still hidden underground, and nobody has found them yet. It may also be that, as the great Little Richard once said, there are artists who have the strange ability to turn gold into shit -just remember what Pat Boone did with his songs- but on the contrary there are also those who transform everything that falls in into their hands into a a brand-new shiny gold ingot. This, for example, is the amazing case of The Gold. A case of joyful alchemy that pays homage to The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, The Rolling Stones or The Stooges - no less - but simply, embracing the spontaneous energy of rock and roll. The Second Mystery: How is this possible? The answer is in the sum of the talents of Kurt Baker (guitar, vocals) and Marky Las Vegas (bass, vocals) -founders of the group-, Oky Von Stoky (drums) and Mark O'Flaherty (guitar), guys in permanent combustion, fueled by a long-term passion, not suitable for upstarts or amateurs. And it turns out that these four golden men write songs like daggers. On top of that, their live shows are abrasive and fresh at the same time, their guitars scream, and their rhythm, in its right measure, is always one step away from the brink of the abyss. The Third Mystery: And how is this possible NOW? Perhaps it’s a matter of poetic justice, maybe. In these times of pre-cooked, tired and stale fashions offering few surprises, their rawness is appreciated and more importantly needed. There is no other group like The Gold. Hidden, about to be found. Mystery solved.

    LIMBOOS, THE

    Baia

[engl] Is good music good for anything? Well, you are supposed to connect to it. Make you dance. Feel happy, sad, fearless, in love, jealous and righteous and so much more. And hit you like five coffees in the morning and a few shots of cognac at night. The Limboos just perfected the recipe on their new album, Baia (Penniman Records, 2019). The Limboos do what they wanna do. They know what they like and they know what you like even though that might be two different things. They work in their own rhythm and it’s proven you can move to that rhythm. Everybody lost a few bucks at the end of the night but nobody cares. Everybody woke up a little tired and achy and didn’t feel like going to work. But they did and did it even harder the next three times that week. Lucky you caught them on a Monday night. With Baia, their third album in five years, The Limboos will transport you, without asking, to a sweet and viscous spiritual ceremony that crosses paths between Chicago from Santiago de Cuba. This new one, again produced by Mike Mariconda and with 100% of their own songs, you get 11 new lessons in class and sweaty elegance. Check the single “Where Did She Go?” and see. You’ll just dance and maybe fall down from exhaustion and make you do things you swore you would never do. Ignoring this rotten postmodern world, they don’t try to transport you to when the times were better. They are just making better times- show by show, record by record. So you got lucky and found something you can listen to in the car, the bar, the barn, at work and even on public transport. But if you choose the last one beware for pickpockets, it’s worth more than the cash you are carrying.

    LIMBOOS, THE

    Space Mambo

[engl] Write a fistful of cool songs, recruit the right musicians, practice a lot, make a great single, get a van and wait for the phone to ring. That's the old formula which all "would-be-somebodys" in this business continue to use. But it always seems to fail at some point, usually the phone ringing part. But The Limboos worked this strategy perfectly. Within months, and only on the merit of one single, the band has garnered tremendous reviews, turning the road into their home and the scene into their office. On this album, their first LP, they sharpen and expand on the sound defined on their 45 RPM single debut- that mixture of R&B and Latin rhythms, aptly described as "exotic Rhythm and Blues", continues to prevail. But the twelve songs on the LP stretch out into deeper territory- old school New Orleans second line (the single from the album, "Big Chef") or gutbucket 50s Texas Blues ("Rockin'") combined with Cuban rhythms ("Space Mambo", the title track) or Brazilian Cumbia ("Brownie"). All beautifully thrown into a blender, making it the national cocktail of a place you would damn sure want to live, if that place even existed. Talent, attitude and energy- these are the three ingredients that define The Limboos to perfection. Above all, they are elegant and adept at any language they speak. Coupled with the profound production of Mike Mariconda, "Space Mambo" is noticeably fresh in comparison with much of today’s music and a unique listening sensation.

    NERVOUS EATERS

    Eaterville Vol. 1

[engl] Rock´n´Roll’s best kept secret has to be the Nervous Eaters and Penniman Records, through the release of this LP, is about to let everybody in on it. Some of this Boston band’s amazing songs, released as singles in the mid-70's, have already seen the light of day on various punk comps, most notably “Loretta” and “Just Head” have been elevated to the status of “nuggets” and are counted as fave tracks amongst legions of fans of this genre. However, these songs are only the tip of the iceberg of an output full of talent and limitless rage. Now, nearly 30 years on, Penniman is immensely proud to present “Eaterville Vol. 1” destined to be THE RECORD to do true justice to the band and earn them the dues they richly deserve as one of the best ever R'n'R bands. This compilation brings together rare stuff –recorded between 1973 and 1975!- from studio sessions and demos along with their official Rat singles and their fans favourite songs: “Degenerate” or “You Smell Like Fish”. Also included are demos like “You´Ve Heard These Chords Before” or “Planet Fever” on which the singer/songwriter Steve Cataldo and co. place themselves on the crucial dividing line between the best Stones and the Stooges. This is the missing link that we've all been seeking and its now ready and waiting for your ears. Eaterville Vol.1 brings to light the strength of wild and hi-voltage sound bearing witness to a band too raw and too good to be successful. In 180 gr vinyl and gatefold sleeve, the record includes a double page insert with liner notes notes, an interview with Steve Cataldo, as well as track by track notes provided by the great Steve himself. Also available on CD, with cardboard packaging and 24 page booklet with the same info.
