    GÖKCEN KAYNATAN

    Gökcen Kaynatan

[engl] The missing component in the history of Turkish pop and one of the earliest exponents of Turkish electronic music alongside ?lhan Mimaro?lu and Bülent Arel, Gökçen Kaynatan electrified the rock and roll scene of the late 50s/early 60s – sending teenagers wild with his custom built guitars and back lines – helping charge the climate for the birth of Anatolian rock. Then, from the sanctuary of his private studio, he revolutionised the industry with his pioneering use of electronics whilst hanging the sonic wallpaper in the living rooms of an entire generation of telly addicts as in house composer of choice for Turkey’s first national television channel TRT 1. Despite having a modest discography of only four 7” singles to his name his influence is a major current that flows through over 50 years of Turkish pop culture. Compiled with unparalleled access to his private studio vault, Finders Keepers proudly presents the first-ever collection of Gökçen Kaynatan’s pioneering early electronic works. Featuring a selection of his experimental pop and rock recordings dating from as early as the 1968 it features both of the highly sought after 1 Numara singles – including a never before heard extended version of Evren – as well as previously unheard archive material and songs recorded for and broadcast exclusively on TRT 1 – most of them never to be repeated. In helping Gökçen end his self-imposed 44-year exile from the record industry we can now share with you the first of these important recordings from a genuine maverick who helped shape the face of modern Turkish music, as well as shedding some light on the rise of one of Anatolian rock and pops must fruitful and experimental periods that began with the arrival (and subsequent explosion) of domestic synthesisers on the Turkish scene.

    IPEK YOLU

    Tropical Anatolia

    KARACA, CEM

    Apaslar, Kardaslar, Mogollar

[engl] Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbuls music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poets broiling righteousness and also his listeners? common ground with their elders in Turkeys history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karacas own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then- current project Dervisan. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kellys flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric baglama, and youre ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem.

    KARACA, CEM

    Nem kaldi?

[engl] Cem Karaca announces his intent to slay all enemies of Istanbul's leftist counterculture with stompin' prog keyboards. Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul's music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet's broiling righteousness and also his listeners' common ground with their elders in Turkey's history. 1975's 'Nem Kaldi' gathers more 60s- 70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca's own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real- life assassins multiply, yet the double- time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound on.

    KIZILOK, FIKRET

    Anadolu'yum

[engl] What if Bob Dylan was also a dentist, and then he hired Keith Emerson to play keyboards on songs he wrote for a play? It happened in Istanbul, friends. Turkish folk singer Fikret Kizilok started out balancing his interest in the toothy arts with playing rhythm guitar in a Beatles knock- off band. He quickly gave both up for more serious acoustic songwriting, unveiling aged melodies and florid picking that evoked the long history of the hilly Turkish countryside. In the early 70s, while trying to recover from a period of mourning, Kizilok also hired an electric & very splashy backing band, and started throwing in prog flute and ritzy Doorsish organ rips. This collection of singles from 1971- 75 lets you taste each of Kiziloks and Anatolias many moods.

[engl] Master of the fuzz saz, Turkeys answer to Eric Clapton brings burly axe attacks to the snakey folk melodies of Anatolia. Long proven to cause just the brain- rot you?re looking for, heres a Koray collection of tracks taken from singles and LPs for your acid- drenched pleasure. The guitar slinger who was once stabbed for wearing his hair too long around the streets of Istanbul interweaves melodies as old as the ruins of Ephesus with the riffs of Black Sabbath & his own souped- up baglama. Nick The Chopper

[engl] Second proper studio album – originally released in 1976 – by the king of Turkish psych/Anatolian rock. Recorded in Belgium with help from session musicians related to Placebo, Janko Nilovic and Mad Unity among others, Nick The Chopper features lyrics in English, huge orchestral sections, and re–arrangements of many of the melodies from his masterpiece 2023. Baris spent his whole life trying to communicate to the wider world outside Turkey. This was his last attempt at doing so with an album before turning to a travel television show to visit faraway places and talk to the young and old, one on one. Every production trick of the glorious 1970s was deployed to push Baris up the European charts, and now they can push him right into your brain instead.

    MANÇO, BARIS

    Yeni Bir Gün

[engl] The late 70s found Turkey in an economic slump, and there was a huge rise in political violence. Baris, who so often put out collections of singles, rose to the occasion by spending 6 months holed up with his longtime backing band the Kurtalan Ekspres. The result was this studio album of Anatolian bummer psychedelia, often unfairly overlooked because it came out in the rather un- cosmic year of 1979, but also considered his best work by many. Yep, there are still electrified versions of Turkish folk songs, and the spaceshot ARPs & Korgs of 2023 are here too, but dont expect a happy swing around the ceiling of a planetarium. The real star of the album is the keyboard player, whose name translates to Sword Agent. Yeni Bir Gun is viciously funky & brilliantly arranged, with tidbits stolen out of the latest disco hits, & lean, mean synthesizers that emerge from the beats like carbonated bubbles. Melancholy maqams & catastrophic Korgs collide when the Turkish psych master glides unflinchingly into the grim late 70s!! First time ever reissue, this release comes in gorgeous gatefold cover as the original, has a repro of the original poster as well, and brings an extra insert with extensive linernotes.
