    SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES

Homo Habilis Blues / Romelanda Sessions 1995

[engl] Swedish mantra sliders The Soundtrack of Our Lives dug deep into the backyard of rock history from day one. The five songs on their debut EP Homo Habilis Blues from 1996 move seamlessly through all sorts of sonic spheres without losing their timeless, distinct T.S.O.O.L. sound. It’s mysterious and ominous and at the same time only rock ’n’ roll. And we like it. Now the EP is finally released on vinyl just as God intended. The remastered songs sound better than ever and the album has been expanded with tracks from the legendary Romelanda sessions. The journey through time and space for the last really great rock band couldn’t have taken off any better.

    SPARROW STEEPLE

    A Aardvark

[engl] Sparrow Steeple are a band out of time. Featuring three original members of Philadelphia’s legendary Strapping Fieldhands (Bob Dickie, Jacy Webster, and Jeff Werner), Sparrow Steeple continue down the path laid out by their peculiar muse -- “future pastoral” (as an early Strapping single declared). The follow-up to last year’s critically-lauded debut LP: Steeple Two, A Aardvark is a five-song 12” EP that belies its modest first impression. Sparrow Steeple balance their innate sense of majestic melody with the small-scale drama of everyday life. “Candy Apple Kid” is a perfect blend of twinkling folk-rock and searing garage-rock, two time- tested forms that rest comfortably in Sparrow Steeple’s hands. “Crank Of Awnings” is both a result of, and a remedy to, your hangover; try and wipe the melancholy from your weary eyes, it seems to be crying out. The first side closes out with “Frank N’ Cliff,” a character sketch spiced up with mouth-harp and sweet lashings of wah-wah guitar. Side Two of A Aardvark sprawls out a bit more with the lyrically-biting but sonicallysmeared “Rancher’s Standoff.” Here, Sparrow Steeple are tending to a heretofore unknown parcel of land that is hosting a psychedelic campfire singalong featuring both Bardo Pond and The Carter Family. Closing out this perfectly succinct 12” on Ever/Never Records, Sparrow Steeple slowly ratchet up the urgency of their grammatically- challenged title track. “A Aardvark” fades out as sounds of the river mesh with subtle wisps of surrealistic feedback and a man talking on a loudspeaker. Here then is the pastoral future. -e/n

    STAFFERS

    In The Pigeon Hole

[engl] Staffers is the brainchild of Ryan McKeever, a DC-by-way-of-Omaha musician and songwriter. After several years of extensive touring, McKeever assembled a full-fledged band and a new cassette, In The Pigeon Hole, on New York City’s Ever/Never Records is their first release with the unit. Staffers specialize in smart-guy post-punk pop as epitomized by “Pastor Carson,” a song that could easily make the cut for the next Parquet Courts album. “Fuck The Brixton” is a sort of sea-shanty that tells a whimsical tale of getting booted from a favorite bar. Exile shouldn’t sound so fun, but Staffers have a knack for twisting expectations. “The Gutter” soars with anthemic chime and “Jeremy” slashes and burns like an indie classic from the ‘90s. “Getting Thinner” is brief and bruising like Tyvek at their best, while “New Artifact Salesman” pairs a clever title with a quirky energy that recalls Half Japanese. “Just Another Tuesday” wraps the proceedings up like a last-call so-long at the bar that they finally let you into again. After all, Staffers get treated well in the end. -e/n

    STATION 17

    Oui Bitte

[engl] After a period of distance Station 17 just wanted to stand in a room together again and make some music, so they drove out of Hamburg to a remote site in the hills of the Hohe Geest in Schleswig-Holstein and played some new song sketches together – all day and late into the night. Afterwards they wanted to play the results live at a concert in Fabrik, a venue in Hamburg. No one in the band expected that the sessions would result in an entire album, but the music told them once again: what had been created here in the radiance of the moment could not be reproduced. A moment of happiness for the band collective. "Oui Bitte", Station 17’s 11th album had been born – quite unexpectedly, between pool and trout pond. It shows again and par excellence that Station 17's is a pleasure to listen to. Why is that? You can either follow the intuitive reference play, the traces of genres (so to speak: listening with knowledge), or you can be geared to the dense interplay between driving, elegiac rhythms and a flowing, aesthetic stream of consciousness, either lying down or dancing with a liberated mind and body. Everything seems possible in the boundlessness of their music. The seven songs are irrigating these candid invitations into a flowing aesthetical stream bundling them into a pleasure which lets you forget your own disposition. “Oui Bitte” shows Station 17 as a band of experts in a kind of acoustic transcendence. Their music tenderly forces you to engage in all of this at the same time. Already in the field recordings of the Elbe shore with which “20.000 Meilen unter dem Mond” begins you are being offered a pact: Hand over all control to the music, swim out to the open sea and be thrown back to yourself – just so you can indulge in the sonic waves. That prelude seems programmatic: In the following 40 minutes you are being carried along, you are being amused, catapulted, earthed, moved. “Oui Bitte” manages to douse the resonance body, to drift away, to wash ashore, to take off. The landing: always soft! The biggest continuity is the positive vibe, a reliable air host, pleasant, more shell than irritation. Station 17 do not produce cracks in the dam, they are smoothing out riverbeds. “Bewegung” then appears as the highlight of the album, a manifestation of the idea Station 17. Move your mind and move your body, as Birgit Hohnen says here, a deceased companion of the group who is being projected into the present of the song through a sample. With your eyes closed this track allows you to take off meditatively. And then there’s the latent melancholy which finds its way in. This futuristic music of the past stays warm, stays cordial, stays inviting: to the sonic utopia of a more beautiful world which has already been established by this album at this point and by this band in any case. In the end the record takes its time, a wide room is designed, meters are being covered. In the calmness of the last song a contradiction pops up: “Das Rasen” (“The rushing”). But the contradiction dissolves: If you listen closely, you are gliding through the high grass (“Rasen”) on which to lie down and listen to “Oui Bitte” invites. Yes, please: Repeat!

    STATION 17

    Oui Mixe

[engl] Remix albums have already become a tradition in the 30-year history of the collective: In 2001, the legendary label Mute Records released the album "Mikroprofessor" with remixes by DJ Koze, Thomas Fehlmann, Justus Köhncke and To Rococo Rot. In 2011, the "Goldstein Variations Remixes" followed, including versions by Erobique, Tobias Thomas, but also by Ada and Mense Reents, who we will meet again here. Timidly, the band began to ask their favourite producers most of whom agreed without hesitation. Soon, a top-class remix album with a Who’s Who of the local electronic music landscape was ready and even if only the bases of the pieces are recognisable, a completely new listening experience has been created here. It's grown into an independent work through the versatility of the participants and their expertise and can be enjoyed detached from the original material. As if by magic, a simultaneously stringent and diverse vibe has emerged that makes "Oui Mixe" more than just an addition to "Oui Bitte". We start with Berghain regular Efdemin, who takes on the instrumental song '20.000 Meilen unter dem Mond'. Efdemin, real name Phillip Sollmann, belonged to the core of Dial Records and now releases on Ostgut Ton. He is considered one of the most important protagonists in contemporary techno, because in his work he understands like no other how to care for the dancefloor as well as the loudspeakers at home. In addition to his records as Efdemin, he also regularly presents and produces other experimental, avant-garde projects. ‘Hausmann', the origin of the remix idea, in the hands of Paul Frick is transformed into a Hi-NRG house number. Paul Frick is not only one third of Brandt-Brauer-Frick, but currently also a member of the legendary Tangerine Dream - a favourite band in the house of Station 17. Paul's version is a floorfiller for people who think they are tired and are proven wrong by the penetrating sound. Pantha du Prince picks up the energy of the whole album rebuilding "Pusch" on a pressing bass drum. Pantha du Prince, who has released modern classics of electronic music with 'This Bliss' and 'Black Noise', was in Thailand during the production. While he was producing the remix in the studio on the island of Ko Pha- ngan, a gang of monkeys stole his nuts: "Pantha du Prince Sharing Lunch with Apes RMX" - a poetry that only life can write. The Andreas Dorau number "Der Monat" is handled here by Toto Belmont from Helsinki. His association with the Hardwax Spectrum are clearly audible, but Kimmo Saastamoinen, as he is actually known, has long since found his own sound: Subtly driving, always slightly melancholic and peppered with billowing delays that you want to immerse yourself in. The number of projects in which Mense Reents has already participated is enormous. Let's limit ourselves here to his electronic projects Egoexpress and Die Vögel - and of course Die Goldenen Zitronen, among whose incredibly accomplished musicianship he is a big part of. The song "Bewegung" is given a subtle dancehall riddim and so many amazing details are flying around in the sound so that close-listening is recommended here without doubt. The biggest surprise is probably delivered by Ada: instead of moving the track "Aufgehoben", recorded again with Dorau, to the club, she simply wrote new music around the vocals, singing over them herself while picking up the trace elements of the original. In a club, this song could take on the role of the last track after a wild night: The lights come back on, but the body is still in the middle of it - and so the soul lifts itself with the music into a sphere reserved only for it: bliss. Michaela Dippel has ventured furthest away from the foundation and yet remains true to it: she picked up the melody that was lying there (according to the text) on the floor, sang it - and it sounded beautiful. Content and form combine and result in a new form, from which one can recognise the creative freedom that Station 17 generate. Finally, we drive slowly with Lawrence from the Forellenhof back to more urban realms. At night, through the province, until more and more lights appear and we finally find ourselves in the middle of a city that doesn't seem to sleep: With a lot of dub, "Das Rasen" thus becomes a deep house track in the hands of Dial Records founder Pete Kersten. A pleasantly soft stomping bass drum drives the melancholic arpeggiator synth. Station 17 are alive and kickin' - in their own and in other people's clothes.

    STEFAN CHRISTENSEN

    American Pastoral Again

[engl] STEFAN CHRISTENSEN has been a staple in the New Haven, CT scene for the last decade, playing in, among many others, ESTROGEN HIGHS, EHRGEIZIG, PERMANENT FEELS and MEDICATION; recording Sex, Worn Leather, Pieces of Fruit; collaborating on the C/Site label and with the venue Popeye’s Garage. And while it would seem that Stefan has always lived a shark’s life—I’ll drown if I stop swimming—it is really only in the last year that he has entered his most prolific phase. All that other stuff has been… practice? In the prior twelve months, Stefan has released two full lengths and a pair of EPs on cassette via the esteemed labels Loki, Night People, and C/Site. American Pastoral Again is the debut vinyl outing from this eponymous artist issued by ever/never records. Channeling Gate, Jim Shepard, Crystalized Movements, and Shakey himself, the twelve minute title track consumes the entire A-side in a melancholic dirge. It is backed by four quick blasts that introduce elements of pop, noise, and more dirge. With varied approaches, Stefan’s songs are written from a unique and developed voice. A unifying thread through these works is the careful craftsmanship, each song tailored perfectly—knowing when to let it breathe, when to ramp up tension—for the most impact. Had Stefan cut his teeth in a more insular scene, in a more glamorous town, he’d have been a hitmaker, but we are thankful that was not the case. As American Pastoral Again demonstrates, he is onto something much more fulfilling and unforgettable.

Köpfe explodieren, Aufruhr in Indiehausen!

    STRAIGHT ARROWS

    On Top

[engl] New album from Sydney’s fuzzed out, psychedelic punk quartet STRAIGHT ARROWS. Overflowing with unbridled energy, you’d be forgiven for thinking On Top was the band’s debut album, but the third record for the Sydney quartet sounds as vital and as exciting as ever. Having spent years touring their incendiary live show around Australia and the world, Straight Arrows have honed their fresh, reverb-laden, fuzzed out, psychedelic punk sound into pointed perfection with On Top. From the frantic buzzsaw of “Nothing To Me”, to the break-beat groove of “21st Century”, to the tender outsider folk of “Dead Weight”, to the mind-melting psych-out that is “Buried Again”, this is the sound of a band that isn’t short on ideas and isn’t afraid to push the envelope of what people expect a Straight Arrows record to be. “Nothing's more boring than a bunch of the same guitar bullshit over and over again. We’ve taken the guitar bullshit, made it occasionally a little faster, and sometimes even a little slower too,” says vocalist, guitarist and chief songwriter Owen Penglis with a cheeky grin. Clearly he and his bandmates have cast a wider sonic net this time around, largely influenced by Penglis’ love of crate digging and his vast musical knowledge of the detritus of pop culture’s past. “Over the writing of this thing I was listening to a lot of 60s and 70s private press LPs from the USA, weird bubblegum, private press 45s from Australia, and a whole heap of 60s Jamaican rocksteady singles. Al (Grigg guitar/vocals) reckons 'Gun Man' sounds a little rocksteady-ish, but I think he’s wrong and it’d be embarrassing for a bunch of Australians to attempt these sounds.” Much like everything else they’ve done, On Top was completely created on their own terms. Produced and mixed by Penglis himself, the album seems to be more direct than the band’s previous efforts, bringing a clarity to their sound without losing any of the ramshackle charm that has earnt Straight Arrows a worldwide cult following. This aural evolution is something that has happened more by chance than by any conscious choice. “As a group of gifted amateurs it sometimes happens that through repetition and long tours we've improved at our craft, despite our best efforts to the contrary,” laughs Penglis. Released in the Northern Hemisphere by Agitated / Forte Distribution in November, On Top is the riveting next episode in the ongoing Straight Arrows saga.“The first album is It’s Happening, the second is Rising, so it only makes sense by this point that we'd eventually make it On Top!!” says Penglis. “Plus it’s WAY more flattering than 'Peaked'.”

    SUN DIAL, THE

    Other Way Out

[engl] Originally released in 1990. Lead by british composer Gary Ramon, THE SUN DIAL clearly worshiped psychedelic music but rather than trying to copy the sound of the '60s, they invented their new sonic genre with clouds of thick basslines, fuzzy guitars, splashy drumming (...) in an embrace of drifting melodic structures.

    SUN DIAL, THE

    Reflecter

[engl] The second album of the British psychedelic band released in 1993 shows their sound evolution more heavily accented on guitar rather than keyboards. It sounds like the 90’s, it’s more shoegazy and noisy than their early 60’s psych influences. An underrated album than any 90’s music fan must have!!!

  • SUPERCRUSH

    Melody Maker

[engl] Supercrush are back to administer another dose of impossibly infectious guitar pop with their new EP, Melody Maker. The Seattle-based group–led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Palm along with bassist Phil Jones and drummer Allen Trainer–named their latest batch of songs after a simple student model electric guitar and a weekly rock mag of yesteryear. It’s a winking tribute to the rock n roll continuum that the band so lovingly embraces, but also a fitting nod to the band members themselves and the amount of genuine songcraft that goes into making music that sounds so effortlessly catchy. Recorded during the same sessions as Supercrush’s 2020 debut album, SODO Pop, the five songs on Melody Maker are far from throwaway leftovers. Engineered by Jones and longtime collaborator Jackson Long and then mixed by Justin Pizzoferrato, the music on Melody Maker highlights Supercrush’s split personality: equal parts soft sentimentality and loud rock bravado. “When I started doing Supercrush it was a return to my earliest musical interests,” says Palm. “I got into catchy melodic stuff and grunge bands before I even got into punk and extreme music. There was a big alt rock thing happening in eastern Canada when I was growing up, with bands like Sloan and the Doughboys getting played on MuchMusic all the time, so I was exposed to all of that. In my mind any band that’s melodic and guitar-based is fair game to be an influence on Supercrush–from The Beatles, to My Bloody Valentine, to Boston. The closing track, 'Rewind’, especially demonstrates this different approach as it forgoes percussion altogether and utilizes mantra-like lyrical repetition and the juxtaposition of layers of chaotic noise, static, and feedback over a cyclical chord progression to bring this collection to it's cathartic conclusion. Although, upon reaching that conclusion it's likely that the listener will find themselves echoing the lyrical sentiment of the final song: "I just want to start again from the beginning.” Luckily, in this case starting again is as simple as flipping the record and dropping the needle. While not a carbon copy of any one band or scene, the sounds of Supercrush will likely appeal to those with a taste for much of the "alternative" music of the early 1990's, from both North America and the UK. From Brits Swervedriver and Teenage Fanclub, to American counterparts like Sugar and Smashing Pumpkins, and even often overlooked Canadians like The Doughboys and Sloan, the common denominator is meticulously crafted pop gems, something that Supercrush also strives to achieve. Ten blissful, hook-filled, syrupy-fuzz-pop anthems; so classically '90s, yet so now.

    SUPERCRUSH

    Never Let You Drift Away

[engl] What a time to be alive. We're thinking the West Coast jangle-pop trio have done an outstanding good job of upping their (and our) serotonin levels, with four amazing 7"s so we decided that the world needs all of them on one proper Collection LP. Although best known for playing in a long lineage of hardcore, punk, and metal bands, Mark Palm's focus has always been song- craft and pop sensibility. After finally embracing all that is sweet and sublime as the primary songwriter of San Francisco's shoegaze darlings MODERN CHARMS, Palm continues to explore the saccharine side of things with this latest project, SUPERCRUSH. Supercrush is currently in the studio completing work on their debut full length album. However, in the meantime the band is releasing a collection of all their previous material. For the past handful of years Supercrush has been employing a drip-feed approach to releasing new music. Every so often a new two song 7" single of power-pop excellence would appear out of nowhere. And then all would go quiet until the next pair of gems inexplicably materialized out of the silence. Here we have all four supersingles, along with two previously unreleased bonus tracks, collected as one ten song release. From the fuzzed-out guitars of 'Lifted' to the tasteful organ and glockenspiel accents of 'Walking Backwards' it's all here in one attractive package with cover art featuring an eye-catching assemblage in the colorful style we've come to expect from Supercrush. ? The two bonus tracks were recorded in the winter of 2015/2016 as part of the same group of sessions that yielded the 'I've Been Around' and 'I Can't Lie' singles. However, this pair of songs finds the band taking a temporary detour from the short and sugary simplicity of their superpop formula to explore a more spacey approach, recalling the shoegazing dreamy-ness of the outro of 'Melt Into You' from their first single, or perhaps even some of Mark Palm's work with his previous group, Modern Charms. SUPERMILK

    Four by Three

[engl] Second album from London's, Supermilk, (the solo indie rock project from ex-Doe drummer Jake Popyura). Arriving just over a year after debut Death Is the Best Thing for You Now, the album showcases a more gentle and personal side to Popyura's songwriting whilst retaining the urgent fuzz-pop and post-punk of previous releases.
