    JAGGED EDGE aka OFF–SET, THE

    A change is gonna come

[engl] Part of the mystique of the ’60s garage legacy is that the bands seemed to put all of their considerable talents into one or two singles, and that was it. But behind every 45 there often lurked a handful of equally killer tunes – performed or even recorded, but never released at the time. So many bands had the potential to make it but there was very little room at the top. The Jagged Edge from Brooklyn, New York, seemed to have it all – the chops, an excellent and decent–selling debut 45, and even competent management. They’d performed with a veritable who’s who of big–name artists, and they seemed poised for better things. But it all went downhill suddenly, beginning with a threatening lawsuit over their name. Crucial momentum was lost and the Jagged Edge never reached the prominence they deserved. Now the exposure they warranted all along is finally here. Break–A–Way presents the bands first complete long player incl. their two sharp 45s and for the first time a fistful of six vintage demos. The LP has the bands 1966 all–time garage classic debut 45, "You Can´t Keep A Good Man Down b/w How She’s Hurtin Me" and their second single release "A Change Is Gonna Come" b/w their wild psychedelic raga classic "Xanthia" recorded under the moniker "Off–Set". Additionally there are two alternate takes of single tracks and four completely unreleased 1965/66 recordings such as the psych/punker "Lies I Spoke" completely with psychy effects and a raga–esque break; the strong moody folkrocker "Look In Her Eyes" as well as "Reflections" and "Stop Feeling Sorry For Yourself", two tracks from the poppier side of the band. This collection proves : the Jagged Edge were way ahead of their times and finally carve out their slice of rock history. All tracks are painstakingly remastered for the garage connoisseurs listening pleasure. The 10–track vinyl LP comes in a full colour cover and with an LP sized insert featuring rare pics and the bands complete and detailed history as told by former members Art Steinman and Harley Wishner.

    JUJUS, THE

    You treat me bad

[engl] Since their arrival on the music scene in 1965, the mystique of The JuJus and their lead singer, Ray Hummel, has continued to grow over the ensuing decades. This was helped along by the inclusion of their first single, "You Treat Me Bad" on volume 1 of Pebbles in 1979. This debut 45 catapulted the band to regional fame in Michigan. The JuJus initially blended an impressive brand of folk–rock and British–Invasion sounds with a raw garage band attitude best demonstrated on their classic 45´s such as "I´m Really Sorry" and the aforementioned "You Treat Me Bad". In 1967 they opted for a change in sound, documented in their more psychedelic recordings such as "Sometime Or Other" and "If You Really Love Me". Compiled on this release are 14 tracks including all The JuJus classic garage singles, as well as a number of unreleased gems recorded during the band’s existence from 1965 to 1967. A detailed insert contains a retrospective of The Jujus as related by band member Rod Shepard, alongside cool photos and band memorabilia.

    MORNING DEW

    Early years, 1966–69

[engl] The Morning Dew are mainly known for their highly regarded 1970 psychedelic album recorded for Roulette Records. Between 1966 – 1969, the band had already established a live–and recording history as a local and regional garage and psychedelic band and along with The Blue Things, were one of Kansas’ most exciting regional top–acts. This LP presents fourteen early recordings including the 1966 Audio House session, both their 1966/67 singles A´s & B´s for Fairyland Records and alternative versions on side one. Side two features the band’s 1968 Fairyland summer sessions, which forged a complex psychedelic sound that culminated in a record deal with Roulette Records. This release covers the band’s local years from 1966 – 69 and includes material never before released or unavailable on vinyl for years. LP comes with an in–depth insert with a cache of photos and trivia tracing the genesis of a band that started as an instrumental group in 1963 and ended after their garage days as a now much respected psychedelic band.

    3 HÜR-EL

    3 Hür-El

[engl] One of the very few, if not the only one, Turkish groups not doing any covers but only self- penned compositions, the mighty 3 Hür- El were three brothers: Onur, Haldun and Feridun Hürel. Having played together for their whole life, it was in the late 60's when they took the 3 Hür- El name, and they released two wonderful albums that we're now making available for you vinyl freaks. This one's their debut, originally released in 1972. A brilliant set of Turkish ethno- influenced folk- rock tracks with a psychedelic feel, some great electric guitar and fantastic Eastern percussion. A very rare album now available again and coming with an insert, with liners and photos.

[engl] ...And their second longplayer which came out in 1976 also on Diskötur, this is an absolutely killer of an album and easily one of the top Turkish ones. It has a more Western feel...Feridun was here infected by fuzz virus and his two- arm guitar (one for guitar, one for saz) will give you no rest. Also there's much more drums than percussion now, so we get an astounding blend of psychedelic rock with Turkish tradition, plenty of distorted fuzz guitar and electric saz. Comes with an insert, with liners and photos.

    Hair

[engl] In the late 60s, a bunch of mysterious psychedelic exploitation albums were released by the budget Crown label in the US. Issued under different band names (The Firebirds, Underground Electrics, 31 Flavors?) , they were recorded by an anonymous group of studio musicians. ?Hair? by 31 Flavors is the counterpart to ?Light My Fire? by The Firebirds. Along with demented raw garage covers of ?Hair? and ?Aquarius?, it contains some of the heaviest, fuzzed out exploitation sounds ever committed to vinyl. You can hear echoes of Blue Cheer, Hendrix and Sabbath, featuring proto- doom, heavy- psych bombs like ?Distortions of darkness One of the best of the psych- ploitation LPs, with more fuzzzz than a dozen 1971 private press hardrockers. Great raw live feel, wild playing and excellent fuzz riffs? Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives)

    AFTER ALL

    After All

[engl] Hailing from Florida, After All was formed by well- experienced musicians with an R&B, jazz and blues background who hooked up with poetry writer Linda Hargrove to record an ambitious album influenced by acid- rock and psychedelic, early progressive sounds. Originally released in 1969 on the Athena label, the album is now considered an obscure classic. Top level psych/prog dominated by Hammond organ / guitar plus explosive drumming. Heres a welcome new reissue in original artwork plus remastered sound, insert with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl. ''Overlooked but pretty good moody late 1960s organ & guitar psych- rock with a Doors influence. The album is dominated by an unusual creeping menace a la Freeborne...'' AGAMENON

    Todos ríen de mí

[engl] Hippie group from Madrid, this is no doubt the most acid psychedelic rock album recorded in Spain in the 70's. This is their sole album, originally released in 1975 on the Explosion label and a very rare and collectable item. No one knew anything about the group members until now, it had been even rumoured to be some Argentinian guys living in Spain...but no, the group was formed by 2 female and 4 male and the brainhead was Carlos Garcia, who sadly passed away not long ago and to whom this reissue is dedicated. 10 tracks, 8 of them in English and 2 in Spanish, all originals and fantastic; there's lots of heavy acid fuzz guitar here, probably the wildest fuzz recorded in Spain (''Todos rien de mi'', ''Send me'' or ''I need money''), and also some great sunshine psych- pop (''Cuco go fly'', ''Al salir el sol''), and it's all very well packed with some of the best multi- vocal harmonies you can find in a Spanish record ever. A truely fantastic album that we strongly recommend!!! This first ever reissue comes with an insert with some never- seen- before pictures and infos about the band, plus a repro of a very rare band poster. Dig the cover artwork too!!!

    AIRBUS

    Test flight

[engl] West Coast Consortium spinoff Airbus never played live or even released a record during their 1970- 1972 lifespan, instead spending their entire subterranean existence holed up in their self- owned London studio, writing and performing innumerable high quality demos and then attempting to place those songs with major label acts. But, more by accident than design, they came to leave behind THE Great Lost Early 70s British Pop Album - a jaw- dropping collision of superb songs, dazzling vocal harmonies, intelligent lyrics and hook- laden melodies. Here, then, is the strange, previously untold story of a band that didn?t leave so much as a footprint in the musical sands, but recorded a greater number of three- minute pop nuggets than almost all of their contemporaries. 500 copies limited pressing in 180g vinyl with detailed liner notes.

    AKBAYRAM, EDIP

    Edip Akbayram (1974)

[engl] Edip Akbayram's a frail guy who spent his childhood unable to walk, but once he grew up he was on Istanbul TV in a whitey- fro and knee length colored robes. Akbayram's voice is big & open, and it took him all across Turkey at the height of Anatolian psychedelia. This 1st album collects precious singles from 1972- 74, with dark melodies that descend in loose spirals, seemingly forever. Tunes taken from mystic Sufi poets who played the ba?lama, but retrofitted with hard plowing electric bass lines, funky drums, fuzz- wah guitars and keyboards. AKBAYRAM, EDIP VE DOSTLAR

    Nedir Ne Degildir?

[engl] As Turkey's political factions turned more and more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi- eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mo?ollar and Bari? Manço's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo- covered voice. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). Vinyl comes with exact reproduction of the original gatefold pop- up sleeve.

    AKKOR, KAMURAN

    Kamuran Akkor

[engl] Turkey's recent musical history is littered with bottled blondes who put on a lot of eyeliner, made a few singles & then disappeared. And since the mid- 1970s, those twin queens Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu have maintained a semi- rivalry while bulldozing their way over pop charts & sales counters. Piles of Turkish psych & folk reissues have hit the west over the past few years, and yet how many have given the luscious ladies of Anatolia their due? So go beyond Selda, and get your gal power on. It's time to steam up your windows with this foxy arabesque singer who's a real- life Stevie Nicks next- door. Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here on Istanbul Plak singles released from 1971- 75. Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high- profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül, maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm? You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like ''Turkish Freakout Vol. 2'' or ''Istanbul 70'', but there's way more to discover, and now you can.

    ALPAY

    Yekte

[engl] In Turkey, psychedelia wasn?t just some fleeting fad. Fuzzed- out guitar shredding genuinely intersected with some of the goals of traditional folk & classical music. As a result, even former twist singers & folk balladeers explored some fascinating & wild territory. Meet Alpay, the soccer player turned lawyer turned singer who started matching local lyrics to Western arrangements even before the mid- 60s countrywide battle of the bands concerts. These early 70s singles lay down doleful Anatolian melodies, and they're simply soaking in heavy & wah- ed out guitar solos. If you're ready to go beyond Baris & Erkin, this is the perfect spot. ANNIE PHILIPPE

    Sensationnel! Yé-Yé Bonbons 1965-1968

[engl] This release on our occasional Ace International imprint comprises an hour of pure pop highlights from the career of Annie Philippe, one of France’s leading yé-yé girls. The collection is available as a 24-track CD and 12-track 180g red vinyl album, both featuring notes by Jean-Emmanuel Deluxe, author of the recent book Yé-Yé Girls Of 60s French Pop, who interviewed the lovely Annie specifically for this project. Annie was launched into a yé-yé world dominated by Sheila, Sylvie Vartan, Françoise Hardy and France Gall. Her debut, a Lulu cover, didn’t fly for the 17 year-old Parisienne, but sales were excellent for her follow-up, a version of the Supremes’ ‘Baby Love’. A year passed before Annie achieved fame at a parallel level to those others girls; her smash hit ‘Ticket De Quai’ paved the way for many others and remains her biggest seller. Annie’s final chart record came at the end of 1967, following which superstar Claude François signed her to his newly formed label, where she saw out the decade. There were sporadic releases in the ensuing decades but, after a protracted silence, she re-emerged looking as glamorous as ever. “Even with the passing of time, I’m still proud of my catalogue,” says Annie. “I had great lyricists such as Gilles Thibaut and Jacques Revaux, and arrangers like Paul Mauriat, Jean-Claude Vannier and Christian Gaubert. Back in those days budgets were not a problem. I even had Bashung, who composed ‘Une Petite Croix’ with me in mind. I think a really nice and overlooked song in my repertoire is ‘Bonjour, Bonsoir Et Au Revoir’, composed by Le Système Crapoutchik, a Beatles-influenced act who were Jacques Dutronc’s band. I even had the great drummer Daniel Ceccarelli working with me.”

    ANT TRIP CEREMONY

    24 Hours

[engl] Some albums just exist due to the fact that the band is about to break up and with that knowledge in their mind the members wish to capture at least a tiny bit of the magic they created playing their stuff at rehearsals and concerts. These kind of of albums are way more personal like a picture book of memories than records made for the commercial market. '24 hours' by ANT TRIP CEREMONY is such an album recorded by a bunch of high school students soon to part ways after their exams. It is nearly impossible to get hold of an original of which only 300 copies existed. Fans of late 1960s jammy psychedelic rock and dreamy folky singer / songwriter style tunes will go crazy for this collection of songs. Among them you find coverversions of Eric Andersen, a well known singer / songwriter of the day, Allen Toussaint, a famous songwriter, producer and soul musician, Billy Roberts, who wrote the ultimate rock classic ?Hey Joe? as well as a couple of contributions of people close to the band next to a handful of originals. The band had a quite unique expression while their overall style fitted well into their era. Some more or less intense but never really heavy rock songs, some mellow tunes that make your spirit drift away into gardens of delight painted in surrealistic colours. Fans of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, THE BYRDS, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, THE CHARLATANS and other similar heroes and legends of the late 60s West Coast scene will dig this primitive version of the super stars. The songs here are all incredible and definitely made to last for a lifetime. And so they enchant fans of relaxed rock for nearly 50 years already. A lost crown jewel of 60s music.

    AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR

    Aqua Nebula Oscillator

[engl] A song title like “Ready to fly” actually gives you all necessary information to categorize the album in your hands as psychedelic spacerock that certainly makes you recall the ancient days of the 1970s when HAWKWIND ruled and LSD was the hot shit to get up from the ground and trip through open space. “Ready to fly” is for certain one of these typical up tempo space rock songs with a straight and hypnotic beat, oscillating synthesizer lines, swishing distorted guitars and monotone chants buried under layers upon layers of echo effects. What has been great in 1972 can still capture your spirit more than forty years later. But there is more behind this album than meets the ear. It begins with a four minute long drone entitled “Kâ” made of sitar sounds coupled with swirling synths and strange voice samples. Next comes “Ready to fly” as the prototypical space rocker followed by “Take a long walk”, which could not be more different then. Here we have folky psychedelic music that flows gently with a haunting, melancholic melody and some fine guitarleads lost in reverie. Early P.F. during their days as the hottest band in the London underground club scene in 1967 come to my mind. And we move on from here to heavily grooving yet utterly washy and simmering power rock with vocals that mill into your mind and back to these gently floating psychedelic folk with guitar sounds that feel like whale chants, swirling synthesizer noises in the back, dark and melancholic vocal harmonies. You want your space and heavy psychedelic music colorful, viola, these French trippies deliver the goods in a way that will please every acid rock fundamentalist who concentrates on the 60s and 70s scene as well as all the desert rock aficionados who were born too late for the freak outs in Swinging London back in the day. And be sure, this is much more than just a record full of music. This is the key to unlock the gate to a world of color, joy and passion where love can be felt as a physical force. The 1960s garage psyche of bands like THE THIRD BARDO, the acid outbursts of the embryonic P.F. and HAWKWIND’s straight ahead space rock drive combined could hardly match with the music of their heirs.

    ARCESIA

    Reachin' Arcesia

[engl] A classic since the year zero of rare records collecting and the ''Incredible Strange Music'' scene, ''Reachin' Arcesia'' has always been the cause of many rumours and bizarre stories. We set the record straight with this, the first ever legit reissue of this legendary album, featuring detailed liner notes telling the real story of the great John Arcesi for the first time. Arcesi was a veteran singer of the big- band era who in the early 70s recorded a pop album with help from an anonymous hip studio musicians. The album was released in a private edition of 300 copies and most of them were given away to family and friends. In the late 80s, one of those copies was unearthed by rare record dealer Paul Major, who was one of the first persons to appreciate the singularities of ''Reachin' Arcesia''. Since then, the album, which mixes over the top crooner vocals with late 60s acid- rock / pop arrangements is now considered a lounge- psych / real people masterpiece. Gatefold sleeve with original artwork on back and new cover design on front. Detailed liner notes inside telling the real story of John Arcesi and rare photos.

''Monster top 5 US psychedelic garage LP. Eerie folkrock Doors sounding spookers w/a smattering of D.R. Hooker lounge/mind psychedelia thrown in, great drifty acid jams, desert wind effects, air raid sirens...all the right moves & attitude.'' Paul Major (Xtabay) Original artwork, insert with liner notes by Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives) revealing the Ark story for the first time.

    ATARAXIA

    The Unexplained

[engl] Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult. The great late Mort Garson (1924 – 2008) is a hotshot of electronic music’s pioneer days with his groundbreaking occult works such as LUCIFER – Black mass in 1971 and THE ZODIAC – Cosmic sounds in 1967 among others. A different side of his creativity used to be his 1976 PLANTASIA project which was classic inspired album of moog compositions to be played for growing plants. The previous year he offered us this hypnotizing album that takes you onto a weird trip to an even weirder sound world. Metallic sounding drum loops add a proto industrial feel to the swirling waves of colorful synthesizer melodies which draw influences from jazz and exotica music of the 50s and 60s as well as mysterious detective movie soundtracks and pulsating psychedelic rock. There are moments of free form electronic oscillations with layers of synthetic whistling and buzzing shifted upon each other next to passages with a hot blooded groove that interfuse your soul and make you drift away on a gently flowing river of sound. This album can be recommended to all lovers of the more experimental 1970s electronics and definitely compete with all these fine German musical collectives such as CLUSTER, TANGERINE DREAM or whatever act Klaus Schulze was involved with but also to freaks who love the progressive soundtrack art of the Italian horror movies of the same time by GOBLIN and other masters. ATARAXIA – The unexplained is a fascinating album that even shows these pulsating synthesized rhythms later to appear with many dance productions. Another pioneer work of a true artist who loved the challenge to cross borders and explore new territories of sound.

    ATHANOR

    Flashback

[engl] Chicago, early 70s. Greg Herriges is obsessed with Lennon, 12- string guitars and far- out psychedelic sounds. Rick Vittenson is a Beach Boys- Hollies- Who fanatic who writes for Crawdaddy! magazine. Both had previously played in several garage- college bands during the 60s. Combining their mutual love for Sixties music, Athanor was born. With the help of top studio musicians, they recorded and self- released three 45s between 1973 and 1975 (the first one produced by Mark Breyer, with whom Rick had played in pre- Skooshny band Brevity) which are now highly sought- after by fans of obscure psychedelic pop. All of them are featured here in stellar sound taken from the master tapes along with previously unreleased studio tracks and superb sounding home demos (1973- 1981), plus a new song recorded in 2006 in the same vein as their vintage recordings. Athanors music features impressive songwriting & musicianship, a collision of Beatlesque harmony vocals, Rickenbacker & Guild 12- string guitars, occasional fuzz- wah leads, Fender Rhodes, studio effects. Psychedelic proto- power pop highly recommended to anyone into Lazy Smoke, Badfinger, Only Ones, Emitt Rhodes, Rockin? Horse, Creme Soda.?

    Inside out: the demos 1973-1977

[engl] The follow- up to our acclaimed ''Flashback'' (Guess110), finds Athanor (the duo formed by Greg Herriges and Rick Vittenson) digging deeper into their archives and coming out with and amazing set of previously unreleased recordings, done at their state- of- the- art home studio back at the time. Captivating Beatle'esque, fuzzed- out psychedelia & folk- rock full of Lennon- esque vocals and 12- string Rickenbackers by '70s Chicago wunderkind duo. 1973- 1977 recordings plus one '70s- era track cut in 2014 with Jeff Murphy (Shoes) on backup vocals. Basement psych- pop and proto- power pop has rarely sounded better! Remastered sound from the original tapes, insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things/Got Kinda Lost) and Jeff Murphy (Shoes).'' These aren't longing, writing demos with tossed- off guide attempts, but instead full- form creations? The pulsating waves of snaking fuzz opening the set with ''Love Shining'' prepare you for the trip with an indelible riff, while moments of soul exorcism lay bare elsewhere'' - Jeremy Cargill
