    ACID REICH

    Mistress Of The Perpetual Harvest

[engl] Heavy psych insanity from 1989, featuring MONSTER MAGNET founding members John McBain, Dave Wyndorf and Tim Cronin plus Shaune Kelley (Ripping Corpse) and Joe Paone (hellSausage). Long tracks with raw & in your face lo-fi sound, wall of fuzz-wah guitars, caveman drums, echo-laden treated vocals… As John McBain said: “We sounded like Amon Düül with Uli Jon Roth sitting in”. Originally released as a private cassette on Tim Cronin’s Cool Beans “label”, here’s the first ever “real” release. Insert with liner notes by Plastic Crimewave. Unearthed by Steve Krakow aka Plastic Crimewave, the Acid Reich cassette is a cool testimony of the origins of Monster Magnet and the Cool Beans label, a vehicle for McBain, Cronin and Wyndorf to experiment with homemade four-track cassette recordings, influenced by their love for 60s garage / freakbeat sounds and 70s space / hard-rock. Using a couple of four-track cassette recorders plus an array of vintage Orange & Ampeg amps, fuzz and echoplex pedals, Danelectro guitars, etc, many fake bands and side projects were created, some of them recorded between rehearsals of their “main band”, Dog of Mystery (pre-Monster Magnet). Acid Reich was born when they decided to record something “very heavy, weird and raw”. They recruited a couple of friends, Shaune Kelley (a top guitar player who was also a member of death/trash metal band Ripping Corpse) and drummer Joe Paone (of experimental / noise solo project hellSausage). The result was “Mistress Of The Perpetual Harvest”, a cassette comprised of four long tracks (including a freaked out cover of Pink Floyd’s “Set The Controls From The Heart Of The Sun”). Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl.

    AKA (Indonesia)

    Crazy Joe

[engl] This is the third longplayer of AKA, the leading Indonesian rock band of the 70s and there has been a slight change concerning the overall direction. With the powerful funk rock of the opening title track, the dirty garage beat of the b-side opener “Skip away” and “Raja jalan”, some energetic up tempo soul pop you will find three exceptions to the rule and this implied soft rock and indo pop ballads for six out of nine tracks. And guess what, it is either the ongoing springtime in my heart or these folks really know how to pull it off even with lush pop harmonies that often touch the borders to the tear jerker field. “Crazy Joe” is a rather courageous album for adding those three rawer and more energetic tunes to the gentle plush of the pop tunes for either the power rock fans or the followers of fluffy sounds may be scared off. All those who dare to listen between the notes will find a massive load of delicate arrangements and rather striking melodies that will give you a good time in case you are open for it. This is rather solemn indo pop but it is well composed and executed by musicians who know how to throw in their passion even in with such dreamy clouds of sound. The depth of the arrangements has to be explored to show its entirety and the playing is just excellent. Even pop music can be enchanting. And if a band like THE BYRDS may go for pure country and country rock -and I really adore it despite being by far no country fan - AKA may do the same in the field of bombastic pop and soft rock for they really, really grab my soul with this. These melodies project pictures of greatest emotions into my mind and send me on a journey into a beautiful romantic love story. Well, if you’re in for some feel good pop rock music that still goes beyond the typical trash, grab a copy of this but beware; most titles are sung in the band’s native tongue and have this exotic touch despite all catchiness. I cannot say of whom this reminds me but fans of exotic pop like Baris Manco, soft rock like the late 60s to mid 70s HOLLIES and Eastern German emotional pop rock like KARAT and DIE PUHDYS may lay their ear on this. Not exciting just utterly beautiful.

    AKA (Indonesia)

    Reflection

[engl] A while ago their first album “Do what you like” from 1970 made a crash landing on my desk and is a great and joyful thing to listen to every once in a while. It combines earthy, heavily buzzing and fuzzed out rock monuments in the vein of the classic UK and US bands with a few tunes in the Continental European heavy rock style with big chorus lines and a bit of a pop feel to it thrown in for the good measure plus great melodic ballads and pop tunes in their native Indonesian language. It worked out from the start although both sides of the band’s repertoire went into completely different directions. This is a trademark AKA carried on through their whole recording career it seems for now I hold their fifth effort “Reflection” from 1974 in my hands. A beautiful reissue and you can bet, it is just different melodies and titles but it is the same wild crossover of styles with a change between each and every song. Lush epic ballads, powerful heavy rock, a great beat tune with a flowery feel that drags you straight to the dancehall and another epic, yet utterly heavy blues rock and psyche freak out track make this a colorful album to spin in my stereo. For the time of its release most of the tunes in Western countries would have been already retrospective except for the heavy rockers but everything here comes well performed and executed with passion and the stuff away from the more accessible pop sound will definitely swallow your brain into a gorge of swirling colours. Fans of 60s US west coast dream pop who may stand heavier tunes and devoted music lovers who go for the classic 60s and early 70s sound will go nuts!

    ALACRAN

    Alacran

[engl] Powerful hard–rock with West Coast, psychedelic, prog and latin–rock touches from Spain, 1971, featuring killer lead guitar and organ, sung in English. The missing link between Los Brincos and Barrabas! Alacran was a Spanish power–trio formed by legendary drummer, songwriter & producer FERNANDO ARBEX along with guitar/keyboard player OSCAR LASPRILLA and bass player/singer IGNACIO ’IÑAKI’ EGAÑA. Fernando and Oscar had previously played in famous Spanish beat band Los Brincos: Fernando was a founding member and Oscar, who came from Colombia – where he had been part of Los Speakers – was recruited for their final line–up, recording with them the psych masterpiece "Mundo, Demonio y Carne". Iñaki Egaña was an acclaimed bass player who came from psych/blues band Los Buenos. So, basically we’re talking about three of the best musicians from the Spanish 60s–70s scene. When they started to play together, chemistry occurred and soon, guided by Fernando, they entered the studio to lay down some tracks. "Alacran" was the result, the only album by this short–lived power–trio, recorded in 1969 but not released until 1971 (as a self–released edition, distributed by the Zafiro label). It was released in Spain and Brazil but despite the good reviews and interest from some record labels in the US, the band never got to play live and soon they split. Alacran was over but Barrabas, featuring Fernando and Iñaki, was born...

    ALVA

    Ja Tik Butu

[engl] Originally released 1978 on Pennine Records, two catalogue numbers before they issued the famouse "Rosemary Lane" album by Tickwinda! Even European music might have quite an exotic feeling and Latvian ethno rockers ALVA are the living proof. Based in England at the time they released their sole album “Ja tik butu” they fell straight into the folk rock genre with their cross of melancholic, even slightly psychedelic rock and colorful, mystifying Baltic folk and all of this in the middle of the UK punk explosion. So you will certainly be aware of the raw edge the rock part of their music bears. But this is just the fundament of the songs on which anthem like haunting melodies grow to entwine around your mind like ivy. The result is mind expanding and you can be sure that this is something you will hardly have experienced before in such a radical form. Folk, melancholic rock and laid back punk rock melted into one enchanting sound with the Eastern, the Baltic folk being holding the biggest share in the overall picture. The punk feeling on the other hand is the result of a rather energetic playing while all musicians are as skilled as a band should be. ALVA leave the sloppy performance always associated with punk rock to others. They even reach a post punkish area with the strange, yet also anthem like and humorous “Vilcenu dziesma”, sixth track on this colorful album. ALVA could have inspired fans from 1960s garage rock to haunting Eastern European gypsy folk to more sophisticated punk rock and become a major force in the rock world if the business was just a little bit more fair. This album is like a trip in spirit through an idyllic landscape most of the time but there is always a feeling of uproar backing up the flaming melodies. Listen with a free mind and you will be dragged into a world of sheer beauty and joy.

    ANALOGY

    The Suite

[engl] PLUS BONUS TRACK! Back in 1972 German progressive rock band ANALOGY released its sole classic “Analogy” and even scored a deal for Italy but soon seemed to have faded into obscurity. Nobody really was aware of a recording named “The suite” that happened around 1980 and presents the folky side of ANALOGY who seemed at least quite creative for a time when electronic pop took over the whole music scene from disco sounds and poisoned the minds of musicians and fans even more. ANALOGY went into the opposite direction and reached out for musical realms that have been visited by legendary English acts like TREES, FAIRPORT CONVENTION or STEELEYE SPAN a decade or longer ago. Dramatic and powerful rock with a progressive edge meets mystical and magical British folk in a way that you might think this is rather an English or Irish original band from 1972 than a bunch of Germans about to cross the threshold to the 80s when music went plastic. This is handmade and the musicians play with a simmering passion. Two epic compositions were originally part of “The suite” but for this mighty reissue a bunch of bonus tracks has been unearthed from the vaults to add even more value to this gem. You will automatically be dragged into a world like a fairytale when you turn on this record even though it all just happens in your imagination. Several passages have a theatrical approach and feel like music from a stageplay and movie like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” or records good old MEAT LOAF has recorded in the late 70s but those aspects are only tinges of color in an overwhelming sound picture drawn by a truly progressive band. For everybody who loves the heavier HORSLIPS and epic stuff like OMEGA with their “Suite” from 1974. This album develops passage for passage and makes this journey into your dreams a worthwhile trip.

[engl] There are few bands who can claim to have built their reputation on one single, but such is the situation for Aragorn, formed in Chesire in 1978. They were one of the first acts to sign to Neat Records as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal erupted, but fate conspired to ensure that they only ever released one single, the killer ’Black Ice’ / ’Noonday’, which has definitely become something of a cult 45 among aficionados of the genre. Here it is along with 12 tracks taken from their not released at the time album from 1982/3. A must for anyone into obscure, 70s styled hard–rock and early metal.

    BOLDER DAMN

    Mourning

[engl] Absolute monster when talking about US hard- rock private pressings. Hailing from Florida, Bolder Damn released this beast in 1971. Ultra- heavy, ''raw- in- your- face'' sound with devastating fuzzed- out guitar, solid rhythm section and manic vocals. First discovered and reissued by the legendary Rockadelic label in 1990, the album has gained a cult status among new fans of 70s proto- doom & hard- rock sounds since then. After many of years of being out of print, we present the definitive vinyl reissue of ''Mourning'': original artwork, fold- out insert with liner notes / interview with singer John Anderson and rare pictures. Remastered sound. Highly recommended if you like Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Pentagram, MC5, Sainte Anthony's Fyre ''Bolder Damn produced a surprisingly assured and accomplished set of fuzz- laden bad trip boogie with a touch of proto- metal, which laid mostly unheard outside local followers of the flame until their latter day discovery'' - Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things)

    BROTHERHOOD OF SONIC LOVE

    Satellite Heart

[engl] The Brotherhood of Sonic Love’s debut album Satellite Heart is out Friday October 4, 2019. The 10 tracks on the album revolve around temptation and denial. They are stories from the down- side of life about the sins of the past and the consequences of unleashing an inner drive for destruc- tion. Front man Asger Westh’s lyrics are saturated by personal struggle and a restless energy and on “Satellite Heart” they are launched upon an ocean of screaming guitars by a band playing with a nervous edge. Stretch your spine rest your bones / In the chapel of lost souls / The demon’s real, the demon’s here / My demon never disappear... (Yesterday’s Drugs) “Satellite Heart” follows up on an appraised EP, a few singles and some years on the Copenhagen underground scene. On the debut, The Brotherhood of Sonic Love continues to refine their love for simple melodies, few chords and straightforward execution, which has become the quintet’s trade- mark. At the same time the band shows a new, more sensitive and quiet side adding more edge to the duality and new layers to the conflict-ridden universe of the songs. Down in the park / Little satellite heart / New adventures / Lurk in the dark / Well known strangers / Former lovers and friends / Secure transmission / They all want the same... (Satellite Heart) Satellite Heart is recorded by the legendary Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios and is mixed and mastered by Frederik Brandt Jakobsen at Hikikomori.

    BROTHERHOOD OF SONIC LOVE

    The Brotherhood of Sonic Love

[engl] The Brotherhood of Sonic Love is a son and his father loaded with an arsenal of fuzz pedals and friends... A vision of exploring the beauty of simple riffs wrapped in white noise and psychedelic undertones with a loud lineup of distorted souls from here and there and everywhere. “Ever had the feeling that you don’t belong? Anywhere or to anyone? Ever had the feeling that you don’t fit in? I’ve felt this way since I was born my friend...” (From Wrong Side of the Track) The Brotherhood of Sonic Love took o as a band in the beginning of 2016. Prompted by the venues themselves, the band did a line of gigs before they went straight to the studio to record an EP, which will be out in the fall of 2016. ”The things that makes us feel alive are gonna kill us. You keep the secrets of the universe deep within you. The things that makes us feel alive are gonna kill us. All the stars explode tonight deep within you...” (From I Wanna Touch your Soul) On stage, The Brotherhood of Sonic Love is a lively bunch of both young and very experienced people from the garage rock, psych and noise scene in Copenhagen, Denmark. From time to time the line-up extends, as so many people want to be a part of this laid-back and very intense musical brotherhood.

    BÄTTRE LYSS

Till Den Sträng Som Brast Än Att Aldrig Spänna...

[engl] First ever reissue of this rare Swedish psychedelic hard–rock & progressive album from 1975. Powerful guitar / organ and great melodic vocals, featuring ex–LIFE member Anders Nordh on guitar. The Bättre Lyss project was born during 1973–74, when mutual friends Rolf Hammarlund (vocals, bass) and Christer Palmquist (vocals, acoustic guitars, piano) started to write songs sung in English. Soon after, the lyrics were changed to Swedish and another friend, drummer & songwriter Rolf Johansson joined in. That’s when they decided to record an album. Helped by some talented friends, including THREE electric guitar players (among them Anders Nordh of LIFE fame) and a flute / sax player plus an organist, they registered "Till Den Sträng..." on a 2–track machine at a state–of–the art studio. The result was stunning and was released as a private pressing in 1975.

    At the Gallop

[engl] Initially self-released in 1975 by the Drumcondra, Dublin-based Cromwell, At The Gallop is a blistering, heavy, loud’n’lascivious ten track offering (thirteen in this expanded edition) of proto-metal infused street rock’n’roll from a time when Ireland was still under the sway of conservative showbands, quasi-religious, sentimental pop pap and traditional Irish music. Despite their cultural struggles, Cromwell crafted a creative and compact catalog—five fuzzed’n’ferocious 45s and this footlong—led by co-vocalist/bassist Michael Kiely’s come hither coo and fey Jagger pose’n’preen, the in-the-pocket drumming of Derek Dawson and minor-guitar hero moves of Patrick Brady, exercising taste, talent and towering mountains of fuzz’n’fury as comfortably as greasy ‘70s raunch and rural modes. At The Gallop is a rare—fetching upwards of 400€ when the original LP does appear—little heard classic in the pub/ fried rock’n’roll /proto-punk terrain.

    DIES IRAE

    First

[engl] German proto heavy metal and proto doom metal has always been more of an underground topic due to the fact that most bands only reached a regional level in every aspect. DIES IRAE are certainly something of an exception to the rule when it comes to the quality. What you get here is a heavy and dark music with open song structures that leave much room for experimentation. Despite the fact that the simmering fuzz guitar cuts through your burning soul like a chainsaw there are still many parts in each song showcasing a fondness for playful jazz inspired passages where all musicians can prove their skills and the whole band still conjures a gloomy atmosphere. Except for the short interlude “Salve Eumel” which is just some Latin babbling. But you feel the light footed swing the musicians have while playing in those certain sections. In other cases DIES IRAE go utterly crazy in a psychedelic freak out fashion. We have to remember this album came out in 1971 and musicians as well as fans quite often were completely out of their mind. Trippy moments are given on “First” in abundance in between the hard hitting heavily grinding doom outbursts. Nobody was even eager to call it doom yet but all ingredients were there. Think of a jamsession with BLACK SABBATH and AMON DÜÜL II and you come at least close to something that could sound like DIES IRAE. This album is highly original and unique and definitely has a place among the greatest KRAUTROCK albums of all times. You can literally hear the acid doing its work but in a very skillful way. Friends of proto metal from the early 70s who dig a progressive edge with their music and have a fondness for trippy psychedelic rock shall grab a copy of this beautiful reissue for originals on PILZ Records fetch prices above 1500,00 US$. And this is definitely an album worth spinning every once in a while. Turn on, tune in, drop out!!!
