    BLEAKNESS

    A World To Rebuild

[engl] A year after the release of Bleakness first album « Functionally Extinct » december 2020 will see the release of another Bleakness record entitled « A world To Rebuild ». Rather than a continuation of the album, this records must be considered as an extension since it features tracks recorded in May 2019 at Swan Sound Studio during the same session as the full lenght. This 6 songs EP includes the two very last songs written before the band entered Swan Sound Studio : « A World To Rebuild » and « Revenge », some may see in these an indicator of the direction that the next recordings will take. This record also includes re-recorded and slightly different versions of Discarded Tales and Remedy The Unease, this one was previously released as an instrumental on the Disquietude 2018 demo. And to give even more consistency to this 12 », long time friends Jacky Cadiou (from Syndrome 81) and Ryan Pattersion (known as Fotocrime) have worked on remixes of « The Closing Door » and « Over and Over ». The result is both varied and coherent, this limited 12” is a collection of dark and bleak melodies played in different forms. Depending on their mood, the listener can enjoy these sad Bleakness hymns in a raging post-punk or almost cold wave and terribly dancing way.

    BODY MAINTENANCE

    Beside You

[engl] Spring has sprung, which here in the UK means several months of not knowing what the fuck’s going on temperature-wise. Intense sunshine with a severe chill in the air? Brutal downpour underpinned by a sticky, sickly warmth? We’ve got the lot, and more besides. Perfect weather, then, for Body Maintenance, who hail from the traditionally sunny climes of The Land Down Under while dealing in a particularly icy brand of hardcore-tinged post-punk. Confused? Nah, you won’t be, so ignore this heavily laboured introduction. You’ll be too busy being totally bowled over by the roar of their echo pedal-laden racket. ‘Beside You’ is their first full-length LP, following a 12” EP and live cassette on guitarist James Kane’s own Unwound Records, and a self-released demo cassette. Superficially, their take on brutally noisy sang-froid is the sort of thing that garners lazy comparisons to Joy Division, but more discerning ears will pick out similar sounds like Stockholm’s much-missed Holograms, Blitz circa ‘Second Empire Justice’ and even Italy’s modern anarcho heroes A Culture Of Killing. All of which is kind of irrelevant except that it should tell YOU, o worthy possessor of exquisite taste, that it sounds fucking great and you need to get this band in your ears immediately. Drummer Zoe Mulcahy (also of Jake Robertson’s effervescent Alien Nosejob project) may be the secret star of the show, whether lending a glowing pulse to the coldwave-imbued robotica of ‘Time Enough’ or simply wailing hard on album opener ‘Silver Yarns’. Riley Stafford’s dispassionate bark also stands out, especially on the driving ‘It’s Theatre’, although it’s buried deep in the mix, clouded by the wash of guitars and Ella Howells’ glacial synths. But let’s not get bogged down in individual performances, ‘cause this Melbourne quintet are way more than the sum of their parts. The whole is punchy and powerful; the sound pulls you all over the place emotionally - you can’t truly prepare for the way the brooding title track sneaks up on you. It throbs in your brain like an amyl nitrate headache; it rages subtly and smartly while simultaneously indulging AND railing against a primitivist instinct to rock out. More simply, it’s the soundtrack to your springtime and beyond - this is the instant classic you’ve been after, so why waste any more time reading what I’ve got to say on the matter? Buy it, regret nothing but the shelf space you didn’t occupy.

    BREAKER MORANT

    1996-1999 Discography

[engl] The 1996-1999 Discography LP by Breaker Morant is an emo masterpiece. The band, hailing from Columbia, Missouri, featured talented musicians such as Ben Graham, Sam Dothage, Todd Ramsey, and Josh Browning. This incredible collective worked tirelessly during the nineties to create an album that showcases their skill, experience, and ideas. One of the most impressive aspects of this discography vinyl is the musicianship. Their skills shine bright from scratch to finish, and even when you think you heard everything, these guys find ways to impress you even more. While listening to this album, one cannot help but be impressed with the experience these musicians bring to their craft. Members Ben Graham, Sam Dothage, and Todd Ramsey were previously core members of the band Prozac Memory and honed their skills while playing together. After Prozac Memory disbanded in 1995, Sam Dothage continued to play in a band called Product 19, while Graham and Ramsey briefly started a new band before recruiting Dothage to start Breaker Morant. Their musical experience is apparent in every track on the album, with each song meticulously crafted to perfection. In addition to unparalleled musicianship and experience, their ideas shine on this material. The band showcases the ability to thoughtfully explore themes like love, loss, and self-discovery, making the album emotionally resonant. The lyrics are poignant and poetic, complimented perfectly by the powerhouse instrumentals of the entire band. Conversation Politics is unquestionably one of those standout tracks that showcases what you could expect from a band that perfectly controls melodies, harmonies, and other progressive orchestrations. This song perfectly demonstrates their ability to create mindblowing segments where every instrument emphasizes another. If you are looking for a track that defines Breaker Morant, then Conversation Politics is a perfect example. Another standout track is Menchu, which features the same intense instrumentations. Their experimentations with elements borrowed from music genres such as emo, post-hardcore, noise-rock, and punk rock are mostly hearable in this composition. The continuous manipulations with various time signatures, tempos, and complex guitar shreds will leave you speechless. Track like Cry, Cape Canaveral, Cry introduces more straightforward explorations into the nineties emo music, while songs like Addiction Soliloquy, Icosahedron, and Song Seven showcase more progressive combinations of emo, screamo, and post-hardcore sound. This discography release is a tour de force of the nineties emo music. Their unparalleled musicianship, experience, and ideas are on full display in every track, making this LP a must-listen for any emo fan. While their career was short-lived, their contribution to the emo scene cannot be forgotten. Expert Work Records did a tremendous job with the packaging and the extras. They put so much effort into this release, and it could pair those deluxe records by much bigger names in the game. You can pick between white or black vinyl (both limited to 100 copies) housed in a screen-printed high-quality cardboard sleeve. It also includes a twenty-page booklet with the story behind Breaker Morant, posters, flyers, photos, and other cool stuff. Also, you will get an 11×17 family tree poster. As I said, this release carries a lot of extras that vividly explain the importance of this band in times when the emo movement/scene was on the rise.

    C'MON TIGRE

    s/t

[engl] The name Afroamericans gave to this dirty style of music was funk in reference to the body odour produced while in a state of excitation. That’s what we do, repetitive riffs and a maximalist attitude in a mosaic of arabic melodies, analogue drum machines, sinuous guitars, with a bombastic horn sections that could make snakes dance. The album includes 13 tracks, composed and produced by the duo C’mon Tigre and arranged together with its extended family, a great cluster of musicians from all over the world: Jessica Lurie, Henkjaap Beeuwkes, Pasquale Mirra, Ahmad Oumar, Enrico Fontanelli, Danny Ray Barragan, Eusebio Martinelli, Dipak Raji, Rocco Favi, Paolo Berluti, Malik Ousmane and Simone Sabini. More than two years of recordings, with a constant change of longitude and latitude. We have travelled far. We have met musicians with great souls and worked together with them on these 13 tracks. A group of people mutually contaminated sharing their musical memories. C'mon Tigre began life in the Mediterranean basin and spread out to the corners of the world's metropolises. C’mon Tigre talks about the fascination that Africa holds in a tales that stretch along a curve line from San Diego to Bombay. That's the reason why we choose not to sign this project with our birth names, because C'mon Tigre represents the single artistic voice which keeps those memories. Where do we come from, who are we similar to? that is not relevant. There’s not one single place, there are many places. There’s not one single face, there are many faces. C'mon Tigre are two people but at the same time is a collective of souls. This condition will change constantly, on stages, in the next recordings sessions and also in all those areas that are not strictly related to music. C'mon Tigre will invest in artistic research continuing his collaborations with animators, illustrators, visual artists like the successful experiment made with Mr. Toccafondo. More it will change, the more it will grow.

    CARAMBOLAGE

    Bon Voyage

    CEL RAY

    Piss Park EP

[engl] Chicago post-punks Cel Ray have returned with another fast, frenetic, funny freak show in the form of 4 new songs on a beautiful slab of wax. Across this EP, vocalist Maddie Daviss warps day-to-day anxieties, ranging from finding the ideal location to publicly urinate to the struggle of attaching names to faces, into frenetically charged anthems, reminiscent of those of Poly Styrene and Su Tissue before her. Josh Rodin’s guitars jangle aggressively atop the punchy and urgent grooving of bassist Kevin Goggin and drummer/recording engineer Alex Watson, creating an angular framework as sincerely sardonic as the vocals that ride atop it. Raw enough for the hardcore and refined enough for the hip, Piss Park fucks on its own terms.

They make The Fall look as stable as U2 and the Butthole Surfers as mainstream as R.E.M. They're from Blackpool and have been going since 1985. This double LP retrospective of the North of England's most unique, overlooked and long-lasting underground band spans 25 years of recordings, with tracks taken from numerous releases carefully selected and sequenced by Philip Best (Consumer Electronics), ergot trip front cover art from John Godbert (Vibracathedral Orchestra), gatefold bad vibe intricate line drawing from Darren Brian Adcock and a twelve page booklet featuring an extended interview/essay by Chris Sienko and a band family tree.

    CESARIANS, THE

    I'm With God

[engl] The Cesarians were born in Hackney, the London borough synonymous with poverty, punk, and politics, a district that mixes multi-culture with gangster glamour. It was here, one winter, in a damp pub cellar, that the legendary producer, Craig Leon, first auditioned the band. Whisking them off across town to the leafy and gentile environs of St John’s Wood, they cut their debut album in Abbey Road’s infamous studio 2. But London was not their calling. They set off, touring Europe, gigging the major cities - Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon, Zurich, Berlin and Rome - and feverishly playing all the towns in between as if in search of another home. Returning from a show in Prague at the dead end of 2010 they got the call. “How about Christmas in Italy?” Well naturally. Wasn’t it here that the great English Romantic poets chose to winter? But this wasn’t to be a time of hibernation for the Cesarians. Though they had found a home away from the London snow, in the shadow of the Apennine, they also found a studio. And as England dozed, fed up with it’s bland seasonal faire, The Cesarians were cooking. The result: A blistering new five track EP that the moves from the brooding menace of “In Your House” to the orchestrated and opiated haze (and highs) of “I’m With God”. It screams and blasphemes with Clash like savagery in the anthemic “Worst Thing” then redeems it’s self sweetly with the sad melody of “School Yard” and the lonely poetry of “Questa è lei”. I don’t believe in God . . . but I do believe in The Cesarians.

    CHAIN AND THE GANG

Down With Liberty... Up With Chains!

[engl] The 2009 debut album from the chain gang led by Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up, Weird War) is a masterpiece of primitivism. From dazzling set pieces of R&B and rock'n'roll, the band forms highly melodic songs full of call-and-response chants ("What Is A Dollar"), or invites you to take a walk through the cemetery ("Cemetry Map"), which sounds so spooky as if voodoo master Dr. John had thought it up. Sometimes Svenonius just grabs a wooden guitar to make fun of conspiracy theories like in "Deathbed Confessions": "I faked the moon landing, I saved Hitler's brain. Yeah, it's in Argentina but it controls the USA." Calvin Johnson produced the album at his Dub Narcotic studio and also did a bit of background vocals. The beat lurches and sways as confidently and surely as an old sea dog's gait in a breeze of doppelkorn. The somewhat odd album title is explained by the always conceptually thinking singer as follows: "Everywhere freedom goes, it leaves a path of destruction. Fast food, bad architecture, materialism, unbridled greed, destroyed environment, imperial conquests, class struggle; combined, these phenomena are seemingly synonymous with freedom." When big words often hide only capitalist greed and imperialist war, Svenonius & Co. prefer to slip into the role of dissidents. "Ian Svenonius is an inadvertent pioneer. His career has been a studied attempt to advance the history of punk rock, using influences as tools to build with rather than styles to flaunt and discard." - The Wire

    CHAIN AND THE GANG

    In Cool Blood

I don‘t believe in free will. I just do what I feel, that is the deal, I don‘t believe in free will“. Kenner hören da sicher auch Anklänge an die Delmonas oder Holly Golightly. Es ist schwer, diese Mischung aus lauerndem Garagen-Rock und ironischen Posen und Bekenntnissen nicht zu mögen. Chain & The Gang haben sich hiermit ihre eigene Welt erschaffen, eine heftig brodelnde Petrischale voller Songs und Storys, die Vergangenheit und Zukunft des Rock‘n‘Roll zusammenführt. "Not for the weak of heart or the slow of brain, „In Cool Blood“ is for the hot of blood, the quick of temper, and the hard of sleeping. Recorded in a spontaneous, ad lib session of dream led automatic writing/rocking, „In Cool Blood“ was made at a Surrealist stomp session in the bowls of Olympia." – CHAIN & THE GANG manager Johnny Sincere

    CHAIN AND THE GANG

    Music's Not For Everyone

[engl] Released in 2011, Chain & The Gang's second album, like its predecessor, was once again produced by Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic Studio. The lineup is also mostly the same, with the small difference that there are now five background singers who answer (in different songs) the calls of Ian Svenonius: Tara Jane O'Neil, Veronica Ortuño, Susanna Patten, Sarah Pedal and Katy Davidson. "Why Not" challenges everyday common sense and the established rules to an energetic blues shuffle. "Detroit Music" sounds like dirty jabs and the Dirtbombs, "Detroit Music II" plays the ball on, towards a heavy monster jam. Brilliant! The title track is then again in a class of its own: to psychedelic laments familiar from the Stooges' "We Will Fail," Svenonius mocks the tastes of the naïve "I actually listen to everything" consumer: "I know you wanna share. But don't!" he spits contemptuously at their feet. In the era of Spotify & Co., Svenonius accepts the accusation of snobbery: "Does a moth know a flame, just because it's drawn to it? "Svenonius sells it all with conviction and a devilish twinkle in his eye. He means what he says, and also knows how absurd it all is. These 12 tracks serve as a bombastic backdrop for Svenonius' treatises on living the life of an anti-capitalist svengali; they're a guerrilla garage rock manifesto imbued with fever, fervour and soul." - The Quietus

    CHAIN CULT

    Isolated EP

[engl] Chain Cult from Athens, Greece return with a new two track 7" after releasing their much loved demo on vinyl just a few months ago. On Isolated, Chain Cult have upped the intensity and dark atmospherics. The sound is bigger, focused and anthemic. The guitar work is haunting and flanged and the rhythm section locked in, keeping the energy high. It sits somewhere between Vex's Sanctuary 12", a more uptempo Killing Joke and Warsaw while remaining a band of their time.

    CHAIN CULT

    Shallow Grave

[engl] Athen’s CHAIN CULT return with their first full length following a great Demo and 7” from last year. Recorded at Ignite Music by George Christoforidis during May and July of 2019, Shallow Grave shows the progression of a band who have played non-stop for two years, covering pretty much all of Europe. CHAIN CULT’s post punk is anthemic, militant and idealistic, putting music to a very dark and bleak time and place. You can hear echoes of early THE CURE, THE SOUND, Second Empire Justice era BLITZ or WIPERS in their music but also the passion and conviction of locals METRO DECAY, STRESS or ANTI… Very much a perfect reflection of what springs to mind thinking about the current Athens scene.

    CHOCOLAT BILLY

    delicat deni

[engl] Délicat Déni is the 4th LP album of Chocolat Billy, a band from Bordeaux, France. As the rainbow enters the sky and shines through the rain, all the birds lift their heads, singing. This album lures us into being blindly joyful, shying away from the terrible troubles of this world. Let's pretend we are happy for half an hour, ok ? It is actually soothing.
