[engl] Chances are, if you picked this record, you know what you're headin' for. If you don't, let me tell you this; you'd better gear up for an unhealthy dose of raw garage punk. But what makes this band all so different from any other garage punk outfit out there, I hear you say? Well, maybe it's the fact that the band doesn't fuck around with superfluous crap and certainly manages to keep it simple & efficient. That could be explained by the fact that what is now a full-blown band (well, a three-piece to be exact), started as a one-man project in a dirty garage somewhere (OK I actually don't know WHERE it started but I assume it's a garage). So maybe Bart (Vox & guitar) was limited by his ability to play all the instruments back then and it showed in his compositions, but most likely, he just knows how to write a good garage song! But don't think that the Skeptics went all fancy 'cuz Bart got himself a real band (that's Kristal on bass & vocals and Xavier on drums). The songs sound as vicious as ever and the formula stays the same, thick fuzz, skin bashing, gnarly vocals & straightforward riffs. And yet, we're led to believe that those garage-heads dig stuff other than their 60s punk comps if we're to listen to their fuzz-driven rendition of Chrissy Zebby Tembo's Troubemaker. And I gotta say, that's another point for the Skeptics, cause who seriously wants to hear another cover of Wildman? Anyway, I'm not gonna go into much more details about the sound of the Skeptics cuz if you're reading this, the record can't be that far and you should just give it a spin instead of wasting your time with my rambling. [engl] Though the first (solo) recordings were done in 2008, the Skeptics started playing live shows in June 2011. They are now celebrating their six years as a band with their new self-titled record, and fourth album, out on Beast and Juvenile Delinquent Records. The nine tracks filling the gap between ‘Fuzz Punk’ and ‘Heavy Garage’ have come a long way from the Revival kind of sound of their first efforts. The overall sound here is more contemporary, with the bass heavier and the fuzz thicker. This LP, recorded by none other than the master, Lo’ Spider, and housed in a sleeve designed by Hélène Jeudy will please both the Spits’ fanatics and the early-Dead Meadow lovers.

[engl] Acoustic duo, Sleeper Bill (singer/ guitarist of Sleepwalkerz) and Mr Tof (upright bass for Hudson Maker) blend folk, blues, rockabilly and country to create a magnetic live show of original music. The two friends came together in 2015 with a mutual love of Americana, influenced by heavyweights Johnny Cash, Hank III and Bob Wayne, which shines through their vintage sound. They recruited the beautiful Mylène in 2016 on the musical saw and washboard, adding to their twang and continuing to present their own catchy rhythms and melodies with tales of heartache and loneliness.

[engl] Too much so-called psych-punk or acid-punk or whatever boils down sonically to some efx added to a familiar punk/rock format. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t qualify to my ears. On the other hand, this Slump band from Richmond, Virginia, ranks high. Very high. (And so am I.) They’ve been around for about four years now, with the current lineup of Will Fennessey (bass), Tony Nowotarski (Moog/guitar), Nick Yetka (drums), and Suspicious Sonny (vocals/guitar). They self-released a single in 2016 that kinda reminds me of the NYC HC band Kaleidoscope, except there are prominent electronics. They also released an excellent split EP (with True Body) that found them expanding the songs into longer chunks that allow for more freedom to move. And that brings us to their debut LP. Slump has retained the hardcore and sludge, but it would be hard to convince some people that this is punk-rock at all. (It is! And it isn’t!) Let’s mention Hawkwind. The UK space-rock group has become a template for riff-heavy acid-eaters over the past 40 years, and Slump is certainly in that line. It all opens with a riff that resembles the MC5’s “Black to Comm” and quickly descends/ascends into the dirty sky above beneath inside outside us all. Don’t expect an easy ride—this is gonna be a bumpy but very worthwhile trip. “No Utopia”? There’s a sane slogan for modern America. Whatever explicit message (?) may lie here is buried in volume and psychedelic mud. The hardcore urge beats the messenger to death again. I think that’s a good thing myself. Evolve, baby—evolve! Things ROCK on “(Do the) Sonic Sprawl”—conjures up visions of Philip K. Dick and 1980s Sonic Youth and some sorta (r)evolution (no Utopia!). “Throbbing Reverberation” is the shortest track and another rockin’ jam. The title gives a strong clue. Forward-thinking metal fans should dig this. Imagine Voivod with a LOT of noise in the mix. Then things seem to get even darker. “Desire Death Drifter” comes on like 90s Japanese psych rockers White Heaven. And dig that space gurgle. Killer. I think this might be the “hit”! “Electric Dissent” is a militant acid stomp that sounds like a more condensed version of Hawkwind’s “Brainstorm.” At six minutes, “Sensory Cocoon” still manages to be one of the more rippin’ things here—a DMT cannonball hurled through punkspace. “Tension Trance” is another long-ish rocker—great heavy riffs pushing harder and harder into the cosmic slop. It all closes in heavy fashion with “Trip Sitter,” a slow-burnin’ churner that splits apart about halfway through to reveal pure electronic swirl—before the rock rudely interrupts again. Hope ya dig a little bitter in yer sweet. That’s life, man. Killer diller—no filler! Gimme that heavy stoned slouch—gimme some Slump!" —Eddie Flowers, Vulcher/Gizmos/WLSD

[engl] Dark Web, Throbbing Chakra, Juice, Mesh, Toe Ring... And I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of them, but what is clear is that with each new band we've been getting to know in which Sims Hardin has been involved, we've been falling more and more in love with this guy from Philadelphia who has become one of our most revered and eclectic heroes of the current global scene, and who has now been able to take the triple somersault, evolving... Or rather perhaps involuting, due to an extreme elementality built from the purest lofi, in a precious and precise absolutely solo project, in which he has managed to gather and make work for him, that same muse that the Velvet used at the end of the 60s, and the one who now, more than 50 years later, is able to inspire an essential line up like The Shifters, to create SOCIETY, something new and wonderful that we didn't even know we needed, but that now after listening to it we wouldn't know how to live without.

[engl] “Let’s be brutally honest here: we fell in love with Sonic Avenues when they released ‘Television Youth’ back in 2012. It was a perfect blend of power pop, garage punk and something that felt strangely 80’s, yet refreshingly modern. 2014’s ‘Mistakes’ somehow didn’t live up to its predecessor’s catchiness and quality. It just wasn’t as good. Enter ‘Disconnector’, 12 tracks on which the Montrealites take their love for new wave a step or two further. Absolute highlight is the slower paced ‘Tunnel Vision’, which almost sounds like Devo beating the hell out of Bloc Party with a barb wired baseball bat. Don’t worry: the result is way more beautiful than – spoiler alert - Glenn’s face in the Walking Dead. Anyway, it’s obvious Sonic Avenues matured way past their power pop and garage punk beginnings. It’s still there, but their current ‘direction’ is more defined, surprising, refreshing and recognizable. [engl] After releasing a string of seven inches on NASTY PRODUCT, recieving glowing reviews in magazines, webzines and blogs across the globe, and playing dates in Europe and the USA, SONIC CHICKEN 4 inked a deal with one of the leading garage punk record labels, IN THE RED, to release their first full-length back in 2007. The album got raving reviews so the band decided to tour the USA in 2009. Then they did singles on ROBS HOUSE and TROUBLE IN MIND and recorded another full length that was supposed to come out in 2009 just in time for another US adventure, this one with appearances at Goner Fest 6 (Memphis) and Scion Fest (Portland). When this tour began, the album was postponed by the label. They went back to Europe to do another month of touring… and the album was postponed again... and until now it never came out. In 2010 the band slowly stopped its activity... stopped playing live and stopped practicing. Years later Dusty Medical Records (Milwaukee, MI) and Bachelor Records (Austria) rediscovered this „lost“ 12 song masterpiece, a garage punk gem from a looong forgotten time. Yes its true, only about 5 years ago this thing we call Garage Punk sounded a lot different! That was before this genre was washed down by hipsters, before it was cool to shake bums to primitive beats. Before garage punk bands had booking agencies, five-page hospitality riders and tuners… This album is a document from a not so long-gone era. Recorded in only two days in a Spanish castle in Valencia, produced by King Khan with help from Isidro (Wau y los Arrghs) and mixed by the band in Perpignan, France, the 12 songs serve as a wayback machine. Try it… take a sip and go T-R-I-P-P-I-N-G! SOUNDS LIKE: a fuzzy, ultra primitive brand of garage stomp that owes equally to 60's pop, VU, Back From The Grave comps, girl groups and Jaques DuTronc.
