WE THE PEOPLE / AMERICAN ZOO

    Visions of time: Complete Recordings

[engl] We present the amazing story of We The People, a 60s teen band from L.A (not to be confused with the other band with the same name from Florida) who created an amazing blend of garage, folk- rock & psychedelic sounds. Between 1967 and 1968, the band, comprised of four young kids, recorded a few 45s for the Reena label, two of them released under the American Zoo name. Despite their young age, the band members were accomplished musicians / songwriters. They debuted in 1967 with ''Feelings of my emptiness'' / ''For no one to see'', two amazing pieces of moody garage with superb vocal harmonies and arrangements. Their second 45, ''Back Street Thoughts'' / ''Who Am I?'' offered two pieces of introspective psychedelia with some over the top tape/echo effects courtesy of Dal Kacher, a session guitar player and sound engineer who had been part of early Mothers Of Invention. ''Who Am I?'' was included decades later in ''Diminishing Returns'', a famous psych mix by DJ Shadow. In 1968, the group released their third 45, this time under the American Zoo name: ''Mr. Brotherhood'' / ''Magdalena'' were another two examples of outstanding garage- psychedelia. A second pressing of the 45 was released featuring a new mix of ''Mr. Brotherhood'' losing one minute but incorporating some wild electronic effects. In the 1980's, the song was included on such legendary compilations as ''High All The Time'' and ''Psychedelic Unknowns''. That same year, American Zoo released their last 45: ''What Am I?'' was a reworking of ''Who Am I?'' with a more psychedelic production by Del Kacher. It was backed with the earlier recording of ''Back Street Thoughts. So, the story of four young kids playing and recording top- notch garage- psychedelia is in itself amazing?but even more amazing is what happened later to some of the We The People / American Zoo members: Guitar player Bill Bottrell became a Grammy award producer, working with Michael Jackson, Madonna and George Harrison among others. Drummer Jason ''Jasun'' Martz toured with Frank Zappa and recorded with Michael Jackson. Today, he's a well- known avant- garde artist and sculptor. Steve Zaillian, the first We The People drummer, became an Academy Award winning director, producer and screenwriter (''Schindler's List'' and ''Hannibal'' among others). This collection includes all the We The People / American Zoo 45 sides plus two previously unreleased tracks from 1967, taken from the only surviving copy of the band's 10'' demo acetate.

    WILD EVEL & THE TRASHBONES

    Digging My Grave

[engl] Being a feral child lost in an era of uninspiring music, the frontman of The Staggers, Wild Evel, decided to team up with members of former teenbeaters the Roadrunners to form a supergroup, with the intention of providing serious garage punk at its best. Take some of Billy Childish’s trashy guitar solos, some of the Miracle Workers’ and The Stomachmouths’ catchy melodies, add some “three-finger organ”, combine them with invisible monsters and cavemen, in the spirit of the late great Screaming Lord Sutch, and you’ll have the gist of what these guys are up to. The Trashbones have their roots in 1960s US garage punk, a time when teenagers started playing their own music, delivering their own ideas and ideals through tight and catchy lyrics telling the conservative society, “Here we are!” The sound that those ’60s proto-punks created is the same sound the four Austrian freaks play – succinct fuzz-guitars, farfisa organ, furious drumming, and wild, howling vocals that represent a one hundred per cent high-voltage rock’n’roll attitude. Apart from the actual sound that they create, Wild Evel & the Trashbones stand out with their untamed live performance, for which each member pushes his plan through. On hearing the drums you might be tempted to look for the reincarnation of Keith Moon seated at the drum stool! The overdriven fuzz guitars will blaring. And the recent addition of Fernando Terror taking over keyboard duties will fully unleash Evel to higher levels of on-stage insanity.

    WILDEBEESTS

    Annie get your gnu

Look out, here come those Wildebeests again with a whole new bunch of tunes to make you the listener perk up and take heed. Whether it be rivvum and bloos, tank pok, instro-mental larkabout, or skewed sick-stays styled beat-noise, these Lairds can KO with the best of them, fuck it, let's make with the fact that The Wildebeests, the band that features (ex)-members of the MILKSHAKES, KAISERS and THANES, can knock any and all others off the blocks anyday, anywhere, and at anytime. After a pile of single, EP and album releases on Norton Records, Sympathy For The Record Industry and Smartguy Records in the US the Wildebeests have returned to Germany and Screaming Apple (who coincidently released their first single way back in 1995) to release this the groups 4th long-player and has taken many a long long while to arrive (often thought to have been lost in the peat bogs deep in the Tripe valley) and for that you have not to thank the efforts of the 3 goons who, heretoforeandthereafter, should be referred to as the artists, but for the efforts of record company blunders and problemos reaching near and far across the desert-scapes of days, nights, weeks, nay months I say, bouncing here and there almost resulting in a veritable record label tennis! The Lairds of the Boss Racket themselves had almost given up hope of this LP ever seeing the needle of a record player... Holy gnu, its years now since the artists first threw this lot of rumbling artefacts onto magnetic tape after at the very least 3 long minutes of rehearsal and preparation. What could be better? Well just listen to the dim simplicity of Lucinda and the untamed beauty of Your Mind to say nothing of the wracked emotion of It Aint Right to get the measure of what these sensitive artists had to wade thru in order to bring their fans a steaming product of damn near perfection.

    YELLOW MELODIES

    The Championship Cup

[engl] “The Championship Cup” [clifford001LP] is the long-awaited comeback by The Yellow Melodies, from Murcia (Spain). After a long time since their leader Rafa Skam has been involved in other projects -his huge fanzine ‘El Planeta Amarillo’, playing guitar in Vacaciones [Elefant Records]; photographer at music festivals; tour promoter, and so on), he has now decided to reactivate his all time band, the one that reflects best his musical influences. So here they are again The Yellow Melodies, with Rafa Skam and Pilar Aparisi, as well as the new guys Jesús González and Jaime Belmonte, as they come back to present their fourth record, “The Championship Cup”, with a lot of of enthusiasm and savoir-faire; this mini-album has a gorgeous production, and it is full of beautiful arrangements. It shows this band’s talents throughout this mini-lp in a 10 inch vinyl, that will satisfy the sunshine pop and 60’s psychedelia lovers as well as classic and contemporary british pop fans. The mini-lp is released exclusively on vinyl, as a gift for those who love appreciating pop in its natural state.
