[engl] Lumen lab is a project created by Diego Martínez in 2000. When he was fifteen, he surprised the electronic scene in Mexico (reserved then only to genres associated with dance music or late rave culture) with drum machines, secondhand synths and any device with which he could use to generate rhythmic noise and distortion. After two years of live performances linked to a post-industrial sound, Diego began to merge other influences such as glitch, the late nineties IDM and sounds associated to hip-hop and punk music. In 2004 the « enfant terrible of mexican electronic music » released his first album « Comiendo algodón en la pista de baile » (Eating cotton candy on the dance floor), published by the record label Abolipop in the boom of leftist electronic music in Mexico. It became one of the most important titles to strengthen a new scene more closely linked with experimentation. « They Are Killing Us » has several collaborations, including his brother Israel Martinez, a recognized sound and interdisciplinary artist. Both co-direct Abolipop and the digital publishing platform Suplex. For vocals, Chanocollaborates. He was the voice of important bands of the crust and grindcore scene of Mexico in the nineties and the new millennium as Hydrophobia and Emphysema, besides collaborating with anarcho-punk bands like Fallas del Sistema. « They Are Killing Us » is a convulsive and powerful work, the result of fifteen years of experimentation as Lumen laband a social context that demands nothing less than a great energy and anger to get ahead, to preserve life, because they are killing us.

[engl] Los Angeles based band Mind Monogram started out in 2014 as the passion project of vocalist/guitarist Edgar A. Ruiz, who wrote/recorded and self-released the band’s debut E.P. “Moments in Time”. Ruiz’s project has now come into fruition as a full band with the addition of members Christian Caro (guitar), Bryan Mejia (drums) and Billy Azurdia (bass) & have since then fleshed out a follow up E.P. this past April titled Maus. Mind Monogram now returns with their Debut LP “AM in the PM” for Aagoo Records. The Mind Monogram sound is fragile, reverb soaked psych-pop. It’s super honest, raw and sweet, it swings and has energy, it seduces... The songs are about; ‘LIFE', life in this moment now, life in the 'A.M. life in the P.M’. They almost sound a bit vintage psychedelic garage, with a serious late night, wind-down vibe. The LP was recorded in early 2015 with the help of Ruiz’s friends and ex-bandmates Richard Delgado (bass) and Julian K. Withfield (drums). Dust the cobwebs from your mind and turn up AM In The PM.

[engl] On the new album, MoE challenges their established band sound and bring themselves to uncharted territory. The production reveals new sides that embraces the duality in their music, resulting in their most dynamic and courageous album so far. Whereas their last album reflected their Mexican influence, this album is another geographical tribute. Over the last years the Japanese music scene have made a profound impact on the band, and have brought them to close relations with numerous independent bands and musicians that continues to influence MoEs music. Their previous releases have focused on a live energy, “Examination of the Eye of a Horse” puts the band into a more elaborate production. The collaboration with producer and mixer Jørgen Træen (Jaga Jazzist/Sondre Lerche/Susanne Sundfør) brings new and unheard elements to the music and the genre. In many ways Træen turns “Examination of the Eye of a Horse” into MoE’s pop album, altering the dogmatic punk sound, in favour for a cleaner and transparent sound. Letting the compositions blossom and leaving considerably more space to the voice, whispering in the listener's ears. Adding a whole new dimension to the music. Extensive touring outside the usual paths has become a trademark, putting MoE on the map as one of the most adventurous DIY bands in Europe. China, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, and countless other countries have all witnessed and embraced MoE's presence. “Examination of the Eye of a Horse” is the beginning of the continuation.

[engl] It seems that every time you turn around, there’s another Oh Sees slab. Long ago we lost all capacity to be surprised that this sturdy unit keeps putting out records and that they’re really good. You can now add the Metamorphosed 12” to your ever deeper shelf sagging row of John Dwyer & Co.’s seemingly no sleep release schedule. The five tracks were taken from the sessions that formed 2019’s Face Stabber album, a 17 track/80+ minute jammified four-sider. Metamorphosed would have been the perfect third LP to fit in with the other two. The very existence of Metamorphosed asks any number of questions. Speculation is for pundits and amateurs. Let’s go to John Dwyer and see if he’ll kick loose some information. As to the Metamorphosed coming out so long after Face Stabber: This is just how the release landed. We are trying to stagger the releases a bit this year and we have a salvo coming down the pipe, so that’s how the cookie crumbled. Metamorphosed would’ve been out sooner but with the virus restrictions, shipping of LPs has obviously slowed down and so has manufacturing, so here we are. It’s worthwhile to note the Face Stabber sessions also resulted in The 12” Synth, a two track deal released in November of 2019. So, what was happening in the studio that rendered almost three hours of finished music? Just the usual run with ideas. Usually this takes place at the end of the planned recording. We have extra time and tape to lay down some deep cuts and long jams, etc., the fun part, really. It’s a test to keep up with Dwyer and his extraordinarily able bandmates. It seems like there’s always something on the way to the pressing plant. When and how did Metamorphosed come together? Basically, I found myself with a 12"'s worth of material in the new year and things were starting to grind to a halt, so it was the perfect time to sew it all up. People need some tunes right now and I think the artist's community is making a good run of it. So much great shit is seeing light right now. John and Matt Jones run the Castle Face label with full autonomy, so it would make sense that Metamorphosed, like The 12” Synth, would have been a CF release. Yet, it’s on the very cool Rock Is Hell Records label, which has put out some great Dwyer related jams in the past. The OCS Live In San Francisco album was not only great musically but all the vinyl and sleeve variants made the collectors break out in a fan sweat they’re probably still recovering from. Being able to do all this yourself, it’s obviously cool to still work with Jochen and Rock Is Hell. Yes. I’ve worked with Jochen a few times over the past decade or more (so he is grandfathered in. :) It’s pretty rare these days that I work outside my own label but his stuff is so well done and usually its own work of art. Last question. The fan cannot resist! At any time, were you thinking of making Face Stabber a 3LP set? Hell no. But now maybe I am. Metamorphosed isn’t just some barrel scrape for those who can’t get enough. All of the five tracks stand up to anything on Face Stabber. The record’s 23+ minute I Got A Lot is one of the coolest songs the band has ever done. As it is with a full on Rock Is Hell roll out, there’s a lot of details. Metamorphosed is no exception. This is what the release schedule looks like: In October, there will be a silkscreened cover limited to 300 copies with four sleeve variants. [engl] Fabulous Dates is the second full-length from Other Houses, aka Morgan Enos of Hollow Sunshine and Hheaven. Affectionately referred to by its creator as "my punk album", Dates is a hurled cherry bomb of glorious songwriting. Both extremes of Other Houses' mid-fi sound are taken deeper and further, with baroque harpsichords and strings a la "Sgt. Pepper's" and "Smile" careening headlong into jagged noise. It's a beautiful mess, one which betrays the young, prolific Enos as a student of rock and roll and a songwriting force to be reckoned with.

[engl] What is the size of the night? How can we measure the night? The night is a very personal moment. It can be majestic; spent indulged in love and joy or terribly frightening; filled with nightmares and fear. The size of this moment is hidden in the details that shake our bodies and keep our hearts beating. In this album we took off the darkest and most mysterious part of our persons and transformed it into songs. We don't have instructions to not make mistakes or not hurt people around us or to love in the most proper manner. We just live. We do good and bad. Sometimes we learn but often we don’t, and simply go ahead doing mistakes. We're complex. We can act stupid and feel lost inside. We can miss each other yet not talk to each other when we're together. This album express this new consciousness we found ourselves exploring throughout these past months. There are some very serious songs and others seem surreal, but each one of these creations form The Size Of The Night in it's greatness and in its darkness. Through this album we’re trying to accept that we can be very sensitive people and at the same time we can be asshole. And that it’s alright.

[engl] Qui is back with another installment of their own brand of avant-rock weirdness. Having spent the last four years in an almost constant state of transcontinental delirium, they have pounded the pavement extensively throughout the US, Europe and beyond. After eighteen years of crazy shows, long tours, hot shit collaborators, and exceptionally ambitious music, the Los Angeles duo of Paul Christensen and Matt Cronk shows no sign of slowing down. Qui’s latest LP, Snuh, extrapolates on their genre-bending brand of avant-garde rock. Working again with long time producer Toshi Kasai, the duo has integrated more shades of unlikely forms and timbres along with their always-present penchant for abrasive noise punk. Snuh is at once both playful and belligerent, switching abruptly from heavy to soft, screaming to crooning, sweet to hostile. The record also features cameo performances from Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox, Head Wound City, Dead Cross), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Melvins, John Zorn) Dale Crover (Melvins) and Adam Harding (Dumb Numbers).

[engl] This is ONE MAN recording and playing everything on this three song EP – and it's no less than a FUCKING POWERHOUSE! No hackneyed cliche of Hardcore, like most of contemporary bands do! You'll get a thrilling mixture instead: Thrashing hardcore like with "Exterminate Adult Thinking", a both raging and catchy song like "Drone Wars", and last not least the odd funky Post-Punk song "Boiys" on the B-side. Like the debut EP of ROOM 101, this is a jam-packed and challenging record! Reminding of the best aspects of 80s Hardcore bands like BIG BOYS or REAGAN YOUTH, a great voice in the vein of Sam McPheeters or the young Keith Morris, but it's also slowed down and irritating (with the Wurlitzer organ or womans yelling in "Boiys")... Expect the unexpected. Comes in proper heavy cardboard-cover, with lyric-sheet, mini-poster and download-code included. Artwork by the infamous Winston Smith, the man who designed most of the DEAD KENNEDYS covers and invented the DK-logo.

[engl] Colicky is the new 12” Mini-LP by acclaimed indie band Self Defense Family. A dark, roiling post-punk gem recorded during a time of personal turmoil, Colicky is the group’s jagged, unflinching look at the disintegration of love and intimacy. The result is a tight and eclectic mini-LP that ranges from cerebrali- ty and coolness to measured chaos. The LP’s instrumentation channels dark postpunk influences and tones, while singer Patrick Kindlon opts for a melodic, dispassionate vocal approach: think Turn On The Bright Lights-era Interpol mixed with Lungfish. Colicky was recorded with Taylor Young at The Pit (NAILS, Twitching Tongues).
