    MORENA Y CLARA

    No llores más

[engl] The apparition of Spanish female duo Las Grecas with their Gipsy–Rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the Spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy–rock duos. Morena y Clara were one of them. Launched by bizarre flamenco producer Lauren Postigo, they released a string of 45s and three LPs (highly sought after now) for the Discophon label. They mixed Rumba, Flamenco, Psychedelic Rock, Funk and Disco Music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz–wah–phaser electric guitars, Moog, Hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo. Featuring their psychotronic hits like "No llores más", "Dejé de quererte", "Buscando alegría" and more.

    VARGAS "La Terremoto", DOLORES

    Anana Funk Hip 1970–1975

[engl] "Dolores Vargas was our wildest performer, our Spanish Tina Turner, Ikettes–era. In my opinion, she was a better dancer and singer than Lola Flores but she never received the same media attention than the famous Lola. Maybe it’s better this way. Dolores Vargas is wine for sommeliers and since now, music for connoisseurs." – Txarly Brown Here’s an anthology dedicated to the ’70s period of Dolores Vargas, known as "The Earthquake" due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. In these songs, released 1970–1975, you’ll hear killer sound and production mixing Funk, Rock and Pop with the powerful vocal style of "The Earthquake". Including real gipsy–funk bombs like "A la pelota" "Anana Hip" or "La Hawaiana" along with her bizarre cover version of "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" and much more. If you’re looking from Flamenco Funk and groovy Rumba Pop, look no further.

El Apagon. Peruvian Chicha from the Horóscopo Vaults, 1978 - 1988

[engl] Founded by Juan Campos in 1977, the Horoscopo label was the major outlet for the real Peruvian chicha sound: a surreal and irresistible blend of psychedelic fuzztone guitars, infectious echo drenched vocals, electronic keyboards and tropical / Andean rhythms. During its 15 years of existence, Discos Horóscopo was the home of the biggest names of the chicha sound. From the legendary Chacalón & La Nueva Crema to Los Destellos, Los Ovnis, Grupo Alegria… We present the first ever compilation dedicated to this groundbreaking Peruvian label. 11 tracks taken from rare 45s and LPs. “It was these groups that, as part of a cultural complex where Discos Horóscopo had a central role, built and developed the stage of "chicha music", filling the lives of thousands of men and women who made us of their right to joy in a changing yet greatly convulsed environment that, nevertheless, offered opportunities to build a better life in the future.” – Carlos Leyva Arroyo

    New Hondo

[engl] An otherworldly mix of Cosmic Disco, Funk, Boogie and traditional Flamenco styles by Spanish "cantaor" El Turronero!! Featuring the legendary Josep Llobell (Oliver’s Planet, Enterprise...) at the controls. "New Hondo" was originally released in 1980 on the Spanish Belter label and in a similar way to Camarón’s "La leyenda del tiempo", it was an adventurous project where the producers tried to modernize traditional flamenco music. Featuring an amazing studio production (analogue keyboards, synths, disco drums & orchestrations, electric sitar...), it includes the cosmic disco classic "Las Penas", the psychedelic funk of "Si yo volviera a nacer" and more.

Ersen 2 – Ömür Biter Yollar Bitmez

[engl] His very last name, Dinleten, means ’listen’. So back to Anatolia once more and hear the unhinged guitar and electric baglama behind Turkish psychedelia’s charismatic singer Ersen. He was discovered by Cem, spent time in Mogollar, and 3 Hür–El, and even switched backing bands with Cem before finally hitting the charts with his own group Dadaslar. There’s loads of B–sides and burly moves on these 70s singles which make his second LP, released in 1978. Wicked funk drums, fuzzy guitars, organs and the poweful voice of Ersen. Includes "Zalim", the killer psych–funk track made famous by the Gaslamp Killer’s edit. Original artwork, insert with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records).

    ERSEN

    Dünden Bugüne

[engl] Debut album, released in 1977, by one by one of Anatolian Rock’s most sheerly talented vocalists. Turkish psych–rock with some amazing funk drums and fuzzed out guitars. Ersen spent time in Mogollar, 3 Hür–El, and Cem Karaca’s Kardaslar before cementing his reputation as the frontman of Dadaslar. His voice can range from one that has a soft edge (where he swallows his notes a bit, like a muezzin would), to growling belt–outs that could have fronted any 80s metal act. Ersen and his ever–changing backup band wore Slade haircuts and loud jackets with rainbow pants or silver platform shoes, and they grew their moustaches just as long as the Beatle bangs of their Western counterparts. Get the synth–wizz, funk breaks and fuzzed–out prog riffage behind one of Anatolian Rock’s best vocalists! Original gatefold artwork, insert with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records), remastered sound.

    DERDIYOKLAR IKILISI

    Disco-Folk

[engl] More demented, brain-damaging Turkish electro-saz & synth drums galore by the mighty Derdiyoklar duo, originally released in 1984! Anadolu Pop doesn’t get weirder than this! These two Turkish guys armed with electro-saz, guitar, drums and synthetizers were hitting the Turkish market in Germany where they lived, playing their sets of traditional flavoured electro-folk in weddings and circumcision feasts for Turkish emigrants in Germany. That crazy is the story, that crazy is their sound!!!

    BÜYÜKBURC, EROL

    Hop Dedik

[engl] Years before Baris and even before the fame of Erkin Koray, Erol’s flamboyant outfits and spontaneous behaviour brought a youthful, pop–oriented world to Turkish audiences. Here’s his first proper album from 1976. While not exactly psychedelic, Erol’s album shows how far the mix of Anatolian melodies and Western production could reach and you can find here some great examples of Turkish pop spiced with psych, disco and funk.

    MOGOLLAR

    Mogollar

[engl] Makam madness gives way to instrumental prog on this burned–out last album, released in 1976, by Turkey’s Anadolu Pop heroes. Mogollar was the band that never had a singer attached for long, and yet even more than Baris or Erkin, they consciously highlighted what was different about the new sounds of the era. Incredible fusion of ancient Anatolian melodies and instruments with prog/psych with ocassional piercing fuzz guitar. Recommended to anyone into John Berberian, Devil’s Anvil and vintage Turkish psych. Includes liner notes by Angela Sawyer.

PEPE SANCHEZ Y SU ROCK BAND

    Regresion

    [engl]
Spanish jazz–funk / prog–psych holy grail from 1976 featuring the crème de la crème of Spain’s session musicians of the time. Pepe Sánchez is a real legend when talking about drumming in Spain. From his beginnings in the 60s jamming with Pedro Iturralde, Tete Montoliu and Vlady Bas at the influential Whisky Jazz Club in Madrid, to recording in Miami with Diana Ross or Barbra Streisand; from working under the wings of Rafael Trabucchelli, Waldo de los Ríos, Augusto Algueró and Mancini to playing live with Barry White? Not forgetting his incursions in progressive rock with Araxes or doing session work for seminal Spanish albums like "Gipsy Rock" by Las Grecas among others. Pepe and his group of friends (Manuel Gas, Juan Carlos Calderón, Pepe Ébano, Tito Duarte, Juan Cano?) were the most requested Spanish session musicians of the time, appearing in countless recordings. In the mid–70s, he was approached by the Marfer label: the idea was to create an instrumental album based on Flamenco music and Spanish folklore but with a modern approach, adding electric guitars, electric bass, drums?Pepe recruited some his friends, all of them top session musicians with a jazz / pop background and the result was "Regresión", his first solo album, released in 1976.

    ELEKTRO HAFIZ

    Elektro Hafiz

    [engl]
Elektro Hafiz is a musician, born and raised in Istanbul, who has recently moved to Cologne, Germany. Already well known in Turkey, he can look back on 20 years as a professional musician. With his former band ‘Fairuz Derin Bulut’ he created and released three albums, which represent a milestone in the Anatolian psychedelic rock music of the 2nd generation in Turkey. Elektro Hafiz has shown and proven openness to various and sometimes contradicting music styles by mixing eastern instruments like the electric saz, darbuka and finger cymbals with different genres. He loves to play with contrasts and create new compositions from there. This open and experimental approach is still his trademark, as well as his charming provocative style that is complemented by a healthy dose of humour. His diverse compositions are heavily influenced by his Anatolian roots, which are reflected in his instrument of choice, the electric saz, in most of his pieces. A further ingenious characteristic of him is using the electric guitar as a rock instrument while at the same time applying the Anatolian harmony system (scale). “Elektro Hafiz", his first solo album, showcases a more open and progressive format to his main base influence - the anatolian psychedelic music. On this album he played a lot of different instruments by himself and also invited artists from different countries such as Kenya, France, Turkey, Switzerland, Austria and Germany to contribute for this production.

    ELEKTRO HAFIZ

    Elektro Hafiz DUB Version

    [engl]
A dubmix release of the debut-album of Elektro Hafiz, with mixes from: Grup Ses, Fedayi Pacha, Komadub, Onofon, Alpadub, F.D.U., Hey Douglas. The legacy of the pioneers of Anatolian Rock in a new format: eclectic psychedelic sounds, backed by Dub, Anatolian Funk Rock, Electric Baglama and Progressive rhythms.

    AKBAYRAM, EDIP VE DOSTLAR

    Nice Yillara Gülüm

[engl] Third album by Turkish psychedelic singer Edip Akbayram, originally released in 1982. This later 3rd album really ramps up the silly synthesizers. You'll hear whooshy 80s Rolands, vocals run through a harmonizer, and tons of totally tubular bass popping, and it all makes it darned easy to hear just where the western intros and breaks stop. Ever wish Knight Rider's Kitt could drive to Istanbul? Take a ride on cheesy synthesizers with Edip at the wheel!

    KARACA, CEM

    Apaslar, Kardaslar, Mogollar

[engl] Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbuls music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poets broiling righteousness and also his listeners? common ground with their elders in Turkeys history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karacas own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then- current project Dervisan. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kellys flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric baglama, and youre ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem.

    Zendooni

[engl] Zendooni celebrates a time when Pop artists in Iran ruled the country. During the 70s, before the Revolution, Occidental and Middle East mannerisms collided and the result was a new kind of Iranian Pop which incorpotated different genres and arrangements to its Persian roots. Touches of Funk, Jazz, Latin, Bossa, Progressive- Psychedelic sounds and Morricone / Blaxploitation styled soundtracks can be heard on this collection, culled from miraculously survived vinyls and cassettes. A surreal voyage back to the Golden Age of Persian Pop. A vibrant time when female singers like Nooshafarin, Azita, Pouran or Ramesh appeared in colourful teen mags dressed in full hippie fashion. We are proud to present for the first time to Western ears amazing examples of Persian psych- prog like ''Safar'' by Hassan Shamaizadeh and ''Vi Bafa'' by Kambiz ; Persian funk by Azita, Nooshafarin, Emad Raam, Pooneh ; Bollywood styled sounds by Ahmad Wali & Hangama and much more.

    KARACA, CEM

    Nem kaldi?

[engl] Cem Karaca announces his intent to slay all enemies of Istanbul's leftist counterculture with stompin' prog keyboards. Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul's music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet's broiling righteousness and also his listeners' common ground with their elders in Turkey's history. 1975's 'Nem Kaldi' gathers more 60s- 70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca's own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real- life assassins multiply, yet the double- time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound on.
