    ATARAXIA

    The Unexplained

[engl] Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult. The great late Mort Garson (1924 – 2008) is a hotshot of electronic music’s pioneer days with his groundbreaking occult works such as LUCIFER – Black mass in 1971 and THE ZODIAC – Cosmic sounds in 1967 among others. A different side of his creativity used to be his 1976 PLANTASIA project which was classic inspired album of moog compositions to be played for growing plants. The previous year he offered us this hypnotizing album that takes you onto a weird trip to an even weirder sound world. Metallic sounding drum loops add a proto industrial feel to the swirling waves of colorful synthesizer melodies which draw influences from jazz and exotica music of the 50s and 60s as well as mysterious detective movie soundtracks and pulsating psychedelic rock. There are moments of free form electronic oscillations with layers of synthetic whistling and buzzing shifted upon each other next to passages with a hot blooded groove that interfuse your soul and make you drift away on a gently flowing river of sound. This album can be recommended to all lovers of the more experimental 1970s electronics and definitely compete with all these fine German musical collectives such as CLUSTER, TANGERINE DREAM or whatever act Klaus Schulze was involved with but also to freaks who love the progressive soundtrack art of the Italian horror movies of the same time by GOBLIN and other masters. ATARAXIA – The unexplained is a fascinating album that even shows these pulsating synthesized rhythms later to appear with many dance productions. Another pioneer work of a true artist who loved the challenge to cross borders and explore new territories of sound.

    BARIGOZZI GROUP

    Woman's Colours

[engl] Giancarlo Barigozzi (b. 1930 – d. 2008) was an Italian music maestro from the field of jazz and related music. The album at hand to review here is a 1974 effort of his band named BARRIGOZZI GROUP that takes a more pop oriented direction with elements of funk added. Especially those funk tunes have a hotter than hell expression and bring to mind muscle car rides through the hills of San Francisco while grooving along to the haunting lead harmonies created by flutes, lead guitar and brass section. You could easily think of any cool US gangster movie from those times and either see moving pictures of Clint Eastwood or Michael Douglas chasing criminals before your inner eye. The overall mood ranges from relaxed to rather simmering and peppy, just properly fitting as a soundtrack for old action movies. A rather colorful effort that will drive freaks of 1970s Jazzrock and funk music wild. The interaction between all musicians is incredibly tight and vibrant. The sound is warm and rich. Just as I would demand it from such a record. The strongest point are the lead melodies as I mentioned before. They come as cool and often sleazy as the old funk stuff from the glory days was but have been laid upon the utterly groovy substruction in a very memorable way. What this band has created with „Woman's colors“ is a collection of outstanding hit tunes and there is a curve of tension that goes up and down like a roller coaster, sometimes even within one and the same song. A joyful action movie for your mind with some really cool hero figures. Originals of this killer record go for 350 Euros in good condition so this reissue makes sense for all who dig this stuff. This record is entirely instrumental but I tell you, there is no lack of singing here for the lead instruments take over that duty quite tastefully. Some freaky fuzzed out lead guitars put the icing on the funky cake for me. You can't go much better in the field of funk. If you don't get moved and inspired to burn like a volcano, you must be deaf or dead. Awesome!

    CLARA MONDSHINE

    Luna Africana

[engl] CLARA MONDSHINE is a musical project of the late radio director, journalist and composer Walter Bachauer who for example used to work for RIAS Berlin in the 70s and 80s. Mr. Bachauer has also been involved as musician in Projects with electronic artist Peter Michael Hamel and kraut rock act BETWEEN back in the 70s. With CLARA MONDSHINE he was able to score three albums before his untimely passing in 1989 of which “Luna Africana” is the first from 1981 and it fits exactly into that era when the sluggish grinding of the early epic “cosmic music” had finally completely vanished and a new peppy drive could be felt with the spacious soundscapes of electronic music. Still rather low-fi with primitive machine grooves and swirling waves of analogue synthesizers to which some hypnotic drones were tastefully added, this music has learned a lot from the grand masters of the 70s and especially the so called “motorik” style of krautish electronics with rather simple melodic patterns and a very rhythmical approach with all those layers of pulses and drones piled upon repetitive structures to gain an effect on you as the listener which sets you into a state of trance. This music is quite imaginative and picturesque and the trip it will take you on leads you through a dark galaxy where only the starlight guides your vessel. Quite a typical example for the later krautish electronics and certainly a must have for fans of ENO / HARMONIA collaborations, CLUSTER “Zuckerzeit” and other similar “motorik” electronic albums. It also has a KRAFTWERK feel just without the vocals of course. Now this long hidden secret gem is unveiled for your stellar listening pleasure. But beware for some of you might get lost in the depth of outer space.

    MASTER WILBURN BURCHETTE

Opens The Seven Gates Of Transcedental Consciousness

[engl] Nearly nothing personal on this man can be found on the internet, not even his real age and his whereabouts of today. Well, he’s a mystery of experimental guitar music of the 70s, so much I can tell. I had never heard about this man until I received the request to review this album and now that I repeatedly listened to “Opens the seven gates of transcendental consciousness”, I have to confess that I am really floored by the dark and mysterious atmosphere of the music. Rather than regular songs you have several layers of chord and melody patterns shifted upon each other, performed with a semi distorted electric guitar that lives from a strong echo effect. A few other instruments may have been used as well even though I doubt to hear anything but electric guitars on this album. Even the oscillating buzz of the third track “Transformation” could easily be created with a guitar and a few effect machines. Halfway through the tune the music knocks over into some very bright and jubilant guitar melody structures. This album is entirely instrumental by the way but I thought you already guessed that. It has a krautish vibe due to the repetitive “layer upon layer” structure of the compositions. It has a folkish and ethnical edge due to the use of Spanish or eastern folk harmonies. The intention of Wilburn Burchette has been the creation of spiritual music that expands your mind in a positive way and transforms your soul and with that your body into a state of enlightenment. Folk from several different parts of the world surely has a big stake in the direction of this guitar masterpiece and even though there are many mood changes from the obscure lairs of the ancient druids to the light filled Celtic spring time ceremonies, this record really lifts up your spirit and cleans it from all the stress, anger and pain you experience throughout each day. Despite not being from Germany this album could be a typical experimental and even cosmic release of the krautrock scene from its era. The years 1970 to 1974 saw quite a few similar releases. Especially the last track of side B, “Realization” is a beautiful example of cosmic guitar music as it was produced only in that short period of time. It begins with some whistling fizzling buzz and then changes to a calm and mystical chord structure with strange echoes and spooky howls in the background. “Realization” slowly develops into a maelstrom that drags you into a musical black hole and swallows you directly. Not as wild and heavy as the early ASH RA TEMPEL albums, this piece could easily be a composition of the guitar legend Manuel Göttsching. So all in all, this is music for fans of blues and folk based, yet utterly freaked out and dirty echo guitar music and cosmic sounds such as A.R. & MACHINES, early TANGERINE DREAM, early KRAFTWERK, the above mentioned ASH RA TEMPEL, Walter Wegmüller or GULAAB.

    NINO NARDINI & ROGER ROGER

    Jungle Obsession

[engl] The first impression was that I could be going to listen to a sexy piece of exotica music from the heydays of the tiki culture back in the 50s and early 60s but then I checked the year of production and it said 1971. Also this is a European production, from France to be more precisely. Nino Nardini was a master of library sound productions for movies, TV series’ and other events back then and this album is him taking his turn on what legends like Martin Denny and Frank Hunter created for the ultimate listening experience about ten or twelve years back when people intended to escape from the struggle of all day’s life and the fear of the cold war turning hot through dreamy music that combined an easy and relaxed jazz with jungle sounds and colorful melodies creating an atmosphere of exotic places. Especially the flashing female humming choirs were typical for that old exotica music. Nino Nardini refreshes those - in 1971 already ancient - musical values with more contemporary elements of hot blooded funk and especially its wild percussion patterns, sweet wahwah guitars and an ever present rocking rhythm section. Blues and psychedelic rock flow gently into the mix to expand the effect on your imagination. The whole music here is lush with great arrangements. Grandiose string patterns often vest the atmosphere of great mysticism in a garment of lust for life and let the listener discover a peaceful world of swirling colors. The earthy rock aspect of the music then urges to come to the fore when the time is right before you seem to get lost on Eden’s island spiritually just to get yourself back to the smoky urban clubs where the air is heavy and the sweat drips from the ceiling. All in all this is a beautiful soundtrack for fans of both worlds, the urban funk of the early 70s and the dreamy exotica music of the 50s and 60s. Both worlds get close to each other and at some points pervious towards each other. “Jungle obsession” is a fine example of well executed library music of the 70s and indeed plays a not existing movie in your head with all different moods. Sheer excitement if you can catch the flow.

    STRINGTRONICS

    Mindbender

[engl] I really love to review music that does not take an entirely definable direction but switches in between related genres and sometimes even styles that are based upon each other. This album can be put in the field of so called “library music”, sound records made for use in movies and TV productions, commercials and for similar purposes to enhance the tension of the atmosphere in very dramatic scenes or accompany the more mellow and relaxed moments with lush harmony carpets. And from all these “library” albums, this is one of the most sought after by collectors around the world due to the musical quality of its content. And so we sit back, relax, close our eyes and get ready for the movie that only exists in our imagination. The STRINGTRONICS take us on a journey from the dark city gorges of any North American metropolis where steaming hot funky and jazzy rhythms amalgamate and get clothed in a veil of lush string arrangements to the banks of the river Seine where painters draw portraits of tourists and people sit in the sun and relax to the typical chanson melodies full of melancholy but also joy of life. In there is a tinge of the 1950 exotica music showing up here and there through Latin grooves and some flimsy elements of rock shine through the whole soundscape as well. It is fantastic but not easy to categorize, could appeal to fans of US movie soundtracks from the early 70s and late 60s, created by folks like George Clinton but also be loved by people who enjoy the early works of electronic pop pioneers such as Walter Carlos and finally by space age pop aficionados. It is all in there and the reference of some artists drawing or painting is not far from what the music feels like. The participating musicians paint their melody – and rhythm patterns with an enormous feeling for depth and emotion. A masterpiece!

    WARNER, EDDIE

    Progressive Percussions

[engl] Eddie Warner, born in Magdeburg, Germany in 1917, has been one of the leading figures in European Exotica in the 1950s operating from France where he ended up at after the war. His repertoire of styles included several kinds of jazz and Latin based dance music such as Mambo, Baião, Chachachá but with a stateless hunger to explore new terrain he built himself another refuge in the library music and electronic sounds department. A cornerstone of his work in that field has now been reissued by Fifth Dimension, a young and uprising label with a special attention to electronic and library music. 1968 was the year that “Progressive Percussion Vol. 1” has been unleashed upon mankind for the first time and since library music was always meant to be used for the soundtracks of movie and TV productions or commercials, not many people outside that genre may have taken notice of this colorful masterpiece. It was not uncommon that such soundscapes back then consisted of powerful funky and jazzy rhythms, fuzzed out guitars and steaming keyboard work. Eddie Warner and his compatriots spice up these already standardized elements with freaky electronic chimes, morse code sounds and even outbursts of free format psychedelic eruptions that will blow your mind. The title already suggests that Eddie Warner and his musicians often put an emphasize on the groove and not only the regular drummer conjures a tight netting of polyrhythmical patterns but also receives assistance from a very skillfully executed xylophone and some handy percussions that rattle and ping somewhere within this jungle of grooves. Rock and heavy funk are the predominant styles from which this studio band starts its musical expedition. Despite being European, Eddie Warner and his mates hit the frequency of pure hot blooded powerfunk and heavier west coast rock played mostly by American bands from California to Detroit and NYC back in the late 60s. When this group calms down a bit and gets in the mood for a Latin and jazz influenced jam, you as the listener find yourself in a smokey psychedelic club somewhere in San Francisco until the song and your trippy dream end. While most of the time you could imagine an rampant jam session of SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, especially the pure electronic moments here are years ahead of their time and should have been a massive influence on later German pioneers such as KRAFTWERK, NEU or CLUSTER. So this is an adventurous piece of music for the fans of groovy, sexy and mind expanding music based on what the pop scene in 1968 had to offer. Close your eyes and join the space dance.
